So my company was closing which I knew but my boss just told me he's laying me off and paying me for this week and the next. Said he couldn't afford to keep paying people while shutting down and gave me a letter of recommendation. Also got a letter about being laid off so I could apply for unemployment.

I was given the impression that I had months left when he told me he was closing up to retire. Didn't really give a good answer IMO as to why everything moved up so fast.

The previous interview he set me up didn't come through so I'm officially unemployed once I leave work for the day.

That sucks. I'm afraid many of us may be joining you in the coming months.

Good luck. Hope it turns into just a short vacation

That's awful. I was under the impression that you worked for family. Did you change jobs or am I remembering incorrectly?

Bummer Hoosier.

I know what a shock to the system it is - same happened to me in the Black Monday purge of Gannett editors on April 1, 2020.

You seem like a bright and empathetic person that’s easy to get along with, so I have no doubt you’ll land on your feet. Good luck!

Pro-tip - the small additional fee charged by LinkedIn to upgrade to their “professional” plan is well worth it while job searching. Let’s you know what positions you are a top candidate for, shows who looks at your profile and has other helpful services.

Family company and yes that's correct. It's shutting down so the owners can retire.

Fine with that. Wish I would have had more notice. I was told 3 weeks ago we were shutting down but was given the impression I'd have months.

Pretend the savings.doesn’t exist or pay down debt if it improves your cash flow

I'm the sole breadwinner so not much cash flow, although there are a few things I can do to make some money here and there.

Only debt I have is a few thousand on my student loan I havn't paid off. I could have paid it off for a long time but kind didn't so I had the money as a backup. Glad I did. At this point that's about 2 months income.

Fortunately I have a good amount of savings. Enough that I could probably stretch it out to a year if necessary.

Unfortunately that's my life's savings so I don't exactly want to do that.
May I ask your age? Immediately try to get a temporary job of some sort... retail, coffee shop, Uber/Lyft, whatever works in your area... it will bring in a little cash and take up time so you're not spending. Maybe liquidate and move to Thailand/Vietnam or some such inexpensive place?

Edit to add: I'm sorry this has happened and wish you the best...

Are they selling the business or is it something you can pick up the mantle with and run the business on your own?

Been there with six kids. It sucks. Takes some time to adjust emotionally in a bad economy. No idea what your situation is but this is a good reason to explore Medicaid for your kids especially. Hard to take though

That's shitty, OP. Sorry to hear it. Being laid off is never a good feeling. As others have said, hopefully you can find something soon and this just turns into a little bit of a vacation time for ya.

Speaking of that how does one job search now? When I started here I found it in the classifieds of the news paper. I'm not sure if that newspaper is even printed anymore.

I mean there are the online job search websites, but those never led to anything for me.

I had tremendous luck using LinkedIn and Indeed.

Get help with an updated, modernized resume if you need to.

Sorry to hear about the layoff. That sucks.

I’ve been looking for a job since Jan and am in the final interview stages on a job I want. Depending on what you are looking for, the job market is tight. In my industry, base salaries have taken a step back over the last 12-18 months. I’m in healthcare staffing. The gig I’m chasing is in International nurse staffing. Bringing nurses to the US.

Good luck with final interview.

What type of business that they didn't want to sell it to someone?

Small division 8 subcontractor. Doors and Hardware, Glass and Glazing. I worked in glass and glazing with one of the owners. Basically was a combination of a CAD Tech/Project Admin/Estimator.

Oddly enough the owner advised me that I should look outside of glass and glazing because he doesn't think business is that good right now. I'm not sure how true that is though, he stopped quoting a lot of jobs.

That said there arn't a ton of places to go either. He set me up on an interview with a much larger competitor (If you could call it that as we only competed on the largest jobs for us which for that company were probably small jobs) and that didn't work out. He said he tried to get other companies to interview me but none bit.

Nearest other company in the industry is like an hour away via interstate. I may try and see if they have any openings, but I don't particularly want to drive an hour to work and back every day if I can avoid it.

Unemployment offices often have hidden gem jobs that aren’t seen by job hunters due to pride

Linked in

Start a small gig and use it to network

In a contracting economy there are jobs. But it takes time to home your job hunting skills. Practice.

You should be able to find a job in that area rather easily.

LinkedIn been better for me than indeed. But I have a ridiculous amount of industry connections via LinkedIn after 25 years.

I'm not sure that I do. I have a profile on there that I set up ages ago but never really used.

I know people's names that have been clients/suppliers but that's it. No real connections outside of that.

If it's a company your former employer/boss/recruiter may have connections with, you can always ask them for info about who would be the one hiring, who to contact, etc.
