Just got laid off

Sorry to hear this, OP. I went through this during the Covid year. 8 AM on a Monday, my boss called and told me that my job is eliminated effective immediately. I filed for unemployment that morning and got an unemployment check that Friday. After that, I used a Placement Agency and had 3 interviews in a week. I was working again 2 weeks later and making more money. I had thought the agency was a temp/seasonal type of hiring place, but they had a ridiculous amount of job openings all the way up to corporate levels. Maybe check one of those out. Good luck to you.

So my company was closing which I knew but my boss just told me he's laying me off and paying me for this week and the next. Said he couldn't afford to keep paying people while shutting down and gave me a letter of recommendation. Also got a letter about being laid off so I could apply for unemployment.

I was given the impression that I had months left when he told me he was closing up to retire. Didn't really give a good answer IMO as to why everything moved up so fast.

The previous interview he set me up didn't come through so I'm officially unemployed once I leave work for the day.
That's terrible, the last 2 companies I worked for, closed down, one after I had worked there 19 years the other 5 years.

Get unemployment after your final check. That should give you time to get everything together resume wise and what not and take some of the urgency off of the situation. Sounds stressful, I'm sorry to hear it.

Small division 8 subcontractor. Doors and Hardware, Glass and Glazing. I worked in glass and glazing with one of the owners. Basically was a combination of a CAD Tech/Project Admin/Estimator.

Oddly enough the owner advised me that I should look outside of glass and glazing because he doesn't think business is that good right now. I'm not sure how true that is though, he stopped quoting a lot of jobs.

That said there arn't a ton of places to go either. He set me up on an interview with a much larger competitor (If you could call it that as we only competed on the largest jobs for us which for that company were probably small jobs) and that didn't work out. He said he tried to get other companies to interview me but none bit.

Nearest other company in the industry is like an hour away via interstate. I may try and see if they have any openings, but I don't particularly want to drive an hour to work and back every day if I can avoid it.
I am not a glazier, but I do own a contracting business...I would strongly suspect that a lot of your experience/skills would translate over to other trades. Such as electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, cabinetry, etc. A good estimator is a critical piece to the success of a trade based company. I would strongly encourage you to consider other, as in not limiting yourself to glass, options that can use your base skills. The Project Admin and CAD experience just sweetens the pot in my mind.

I can tell you that if I had an opening and you were in this area I would be eager to talk to you. I am sure that there is someone within your "travel from home zone" that would feel similarly. Take this as an opportunity, for real, because I can totally see this being a net positive for you. Go get 'em kid!!

Shoot...if you can get yourself to work on a daily basis, keep your phone in your pocket when you should be working and aren't a drug user you just passed half of the potential employees right there...probably more than half. Not even joking. When someone like me looks at someone like you I like to see that you are serious about being committed to the company and are trustworthy, etc. I sense that you are those things. You got this!!

Speaking of that how does one job search now? When I started here I found it in the classifieds of the news paper. I'm not sure if that newspaper is even printed anymore.

I mean there are the online job search websites, but those never led to anything for me.
Make a list of all of the companies that are bidding on the same jobs that you are. NOT some, ALL. Pick your favorites and start calling them. Tell them that you are a recently displaced Estimator/Project and darn good one. You prefer to stay in the area for the stability of your family, etc. Profit!

I did more commercial stuff and the glazing part was done by others.

My dad does have a carpentry business he is doing that I could get some hours in at. I'm not sure how many. Certainly not full time hours.
I think the biggest issue for me right now is that I have to look for a job which is something that I know I'm just not very good at. I also hate it with a passion because I feel like it's 90% bullshitting. I have no problem with the "do my skills line up with what you need" part, it's the "Where do you see yourself in 5 years" and "Why do you want to work here" questions that are BS. I want to work there to work in exchange for money. But I'm not suppose to say that, I'm suppose to pretend like working at the company is going to feed into some higher aspiration of my life and that I'd still want to work there even if I didn't need the income.
Hoosier, seriously, don't do that to yourself. LOTS of people change careers in their lives and have to learn a new raft of details. NO BIG DEAL!

Lots of employers would like to have solid, family oriented guy filling a key position for them. DON"T sell yourself short!

If you are under 45 this will make you better. If over 50 it makes a difference in how you approach things. Over 60 you have a problem without a good plan.
Depends on the person and the field. At 59 I made a career change. At 62 I'm still getting pinged by people in my prior life either wanting me to return full time, part time, or to consult.

Don't count out part time work or consulting in your field while searching. Many employers like to hire people who can make things happen in a bad situation instead of waiting for something to come along.

Yeah I am not going to limit it to just glass and glazing or even just construction although I am guessing construction is my best chance.

I updated my resume because I knew the company was closing. Only change I need to make is to change present to "March 2025" on the resume.

As for unemployment, can I apply for that now even if my last check won't be for 2 weeks or do I need to wait til after the last check comes through?

I think you can get unemployment now. I over think sometimes. Damn hyper vigilance.

Apply now. There will be a section to report when you are paid through and when benefits should start.

Im not going to lie, I have changed my attitude on some of this. When I interview folks, the honest answer is much more important that a BS spin. Do they excite me? Would I like to work with them? Can I learn something from them?

E.G.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years" - Considering my recent company going under, I would like to be <in a> stable work environment, happy with my output, where I contribute to a team and produce meaningful product that meets our customer needs. In 5 years, I don't know, but I'd love to be able to work in a healthy team environment, help grow my group and possibly move towards team leadership. <depending on the specific org make up for your industry>

"Why do you want to work here" - from what I have heard, this company has a good reputation for quality delivery, and happy customers and stability.

Esp coming from a company that is going under in your case, IMO, this gives you some options that other scenarios may not. Just my .02. The presentation usually feels a little salesy, so use your words, but when I interview, if we end up asking these types of questions, I don't need to hear "I expect to be in your role". Everything depends on where one is in the org.

Also, sorry you have to deal with this.

Have you looked into being a 1099 contractor while looking for something career based?

I’m not sure about Iowa Medicaid but I’m not sure there’s much to fall back on these days with the proposed funding cuts all across the board

Good luck, I’ve been the sole wage earner for my son/wife and current GF. It’s a lot to carry on your shoulders. Wishing you the best of luck and hoping your skills translate across to different opportunities.

Iowa’s a bit of an economic wasteland but opportunities do exist. You seem like an intelligent, personable individual and that goes a long ways in the workplace.

Linked in worked well for me.

Easy to use…
There are companies who direct you to use LinkedIn to apply now.

OP, I believe you can get a free month of LinkedIn premium. Just cancel once you sign up, that way you won't be charged. Either way, it's a great tool for networking and job hunting. I believe premium lets you reach out to the hiring manager directly if you so choose.

Boss had mentioned he might send some free Lance work my way but didn't give any information on what he would pay me for it or anything. He has my number so I guess if he needs something he will let me know.

I am actually not in Iowa, I live just outside of South Bend, IN. I have very little connection to Iowa other than trips there as a kid to see my aunt and my mom raised me watching the Hawkeyes. That aunt has since passed.

I have been on the U of I campus twice. Once to see my cousin graduate in Carver Hawkeye arena and once to go to a game. I've been to 2 hawkeye games in my life. Once when Drew Tate was the QB and they traveled to IU to play. The other I think Vandenberg was the QB and they played Tennessee Tech. That game got delayed in the middle of the game due to weather.

Honestly that was probably the last time I was in Iowa.

I'm not sure that I do. I have a profile on there that I set up ages ago but never really used.

I know people's names that have been clients/suppliers but that's it. No real connections outside of that.
Not sure how it would affect your unemployment benefits, but I’d think about a part time job a Home Depot, Lowe’s or local hardware store to slow the cash burn while you look for a permanent full time position.

I would think you could find something in the CAD tech or estimator in the RV industry. If I recall your on the west side of SB? Sorry to hear man

Sorry man, this might be the best thing that could have happened. I got laid off once and it was pretty freeing. My package was a bit different than yours, but still I'm sure you'll be fine in the end.

You might find you enjoy something entirely different. With the Internet and AI there are so many ways to make a living other than a 9-5 now. You'll be good.

Sorry to hear this. I know you can recover from this and you and your family will be better off in the end.

Best wishes.
