Kaleb Young

Young won the North West AAA Regional last weekend

MD 9-0
TF 16-1
TF 20-3
DEC 2-1 (won final over Trent Hidlay who was 34-2)
Hidlay's brother is going to NCSt. The NWCA region has produced Quentin Wright, Steve Bozak, the Altons (recently) and stepping back in time but getting it closer to Iowa (State) Nate Carr and Kevin Darkus were NWAAA champions.
Anyhow, the victory over the Hidlay kid, while close is a quality win.
I am not sure of what to make of the Young kid. Tough as nails, strong as bull, large gas tank and of course he is a young guns product - but he probably is going to show up at Iowa City without a state title. Of course Phil Davis showed up at State College without ever winning a state title.
Kemerer and Young will be very productive wrestlers for you guys.

Who else will be at his weight at the state tournament?

Who's he going to lose to this year? Young is #2 National at 160, I'm taking Young

Hidlay is ranked the top 20 in the nation. It's a good win.

Jake Wentzel is another ranked wrestler but I think he is in the other division so Young won't see him at state.

Michael Labriola is another tough wrestler (top 5-10) that would have been at Young's weight and same division, but I believe he is up at 170 now. Haven't checked the PIAA brackets yet, but that's off the top of my head.

FIFY

Young should have a couple of tough sophs in Josh Stillings (quarters) and Tim Wallace (semis) on his way to the finals, but neither are in his class yet and I don't think threaten him. I like Hidlay to come out of the other side of the bracket to meet Young again in the finals. As pointed out above, Trent is the younger brother of Hayden Hidlay and is a tremendous wrestler as a sophomore. He's the only one in the bracket who can test Young IMO. Wentzel is in AA so Young will not meet him. It will be interesting to see what happens in terms of the Dapper Dan if both Young and Wentzel win - I would guess that Wentzel gets the nod as a 2x State Champ. At 170 the AA champ is likely an underclassman, and AAA champ may also be an underclassman (Nino Bonnacorsi and Labriola are among the favorites). So there is a chance they move Young up to 170 for the Dapper Dan, although if Austin Bell or Jared Seigrist win 170 in AAA, the committee will probably go with the SR champ in the weight class.

So Lee with the fall but Young with the pin. Interesting. Hopefully Lee steps up his game in the next round and comes up with the pin, like his Young Guns teammate.

In all seriousness, best of luck to both kids. Hoping to see them in the lineup together soon.

Spicolli, thanks for posting these. A key match to watch Friday afternoon is the AAA 138 where
tOSU recruit and 2 time state champ Luke Pletcher faces faces Sammy Sasso. This is a rematch of the KOM finals earlier this year where Pletcher won in OT.

Lee pinned Sasso Last year in the AAA finals. Lee has a clear path to his 3rd state title. Young will have a tough match with Trent Hidlay and is
Favored to win

Spencer Lee, (Franklin Regional) F Zurich Storm, (New Oxford), 0:39

for those that want to listen to todays match click on the link. You can follow brackets at floAreana.

I remember a Jake Kemerer that wrestled at Penn State (for like a year) and went to the same high school

I know that Marinelli is obviously our top recruit of the 2016 class, but Kaleb Young's stock has been steadily climbing since his huge Super 32 title. I'm super excited to see him in black and gold. His style is very entertaining. He is very offensive on his feet with a variety of leg attacks and he's a beast on top with several options he goes to for back points. He looks like he could go 165 or 174. It should be a nice one two punch with him and Alex for four straight years.

I think Young could be a Zack Zavatksy type. Guy won 1 title in PA and is looking about as good as anyone not named Dean, or Brooks:) at 184 as a freshman. PA is just stupid as far as talent at the high school level. Would love for Young to fill in at 174 at that level in 2 years.
