Kim Reynolds seeks federal funding to ease Iowa's critical shortage of doctors

It's true there is good and bad no matter where you live. Nowhere is perfect. However, there are reasons Iowa is having a hard time retaining college graduates.

Making fun of people because they don't want to move to flyover country is not going to convince people to move to flyover country.
K. I was needling Solar. I'm pretty sure he can take it.
I have one college educated child who has left the state. Another one is packing up and leaving in a few months. I know a lot about why Iowa isn't retaining young people.

Sure. Explain to me how 44 out of 50 is good? Will this plan address the goals? Will the funding end under the Trump Administration and even be available?
I’d like to know where the Iowa Medical Society is sourcing their information that Iowa is 44th out of 50. Because according to Becker’s Hospital Review, Iowa is 19th out of 50 for number of primary care physicians per 100K population.

44/50 is pretty bad. Considering Iowa has a top 10th percentile health care system in one poll and top 50% in another, seems it could be a lot better if Iowa had an adequate amount of physicians. Especially with the cancer rate of the state.

She has been the governor for almost 8 years now. Who else should I address my concerns to?
Why don’t you call the large Heathcare providers and ask them to do a better job retaining and paying Dr’s to stay in the state instead of focusing on how much money they can make by not paying top dollar to them as well as denying claims. It goes well beyond the Governor’s fault.

It does if you live in one of the top counties/cities. It's true that we don't have gator wrestling or monster truck rallies like you Noles have, but if you are in a blue part of the state you have a good quality of life.
Iowa City, Cedar Crapids and DSM have improved greatly over the years but let’s face it, nearly 23 million people live in Florida for a reason.

Care to address being nearly the worst state in this category or just gloss over that fact? Fvcking clown.
You think it’s the Governor’s fault you ****ing clown? Didn’t realize the Governor and state is responsible for my healthcare. It’s on the healthcare providers paying the Dr’s a better pay structure instead of trying to minimize it and denying patient claims to maximize profits over their employees and patient care.

Every state is facing a problematic shortage of doctors. Every. Single. State.

If you don’t believe me, simply Google “physician shortage” followed by the name of your favorite blue state.

The federal government has allocated something like $14 billion for this program. Was Reynolds not supposed to apply for Iowa’s fair share?
Not like Iowa. Let’s face it, 30 yr old aspiring medical professionals are NOT rushing to put Iowa on their list for a multitude of reasons.

Gotta love how she talked about how great a job she was doing last week. And this week she's begging the federal government to clean up her messes. Fire her already.
Gives $300 million to religious schools in private vouchers then begs the Feds to bail her out with Doctors. I guess as long as she turns down free meals for the kids over the summer, she's still a real conservative.

Reynolds is seeking $100+ million in funding to create more residency positions in Iowa, which ranks 44th in patient to doctor ratio. Statistics show that once trained the majority of doctors will remain in the state where they went to medical school or did their residency.

Ah well, she'll just use the 100 mil to cut taxes for her wealthy benefactors. Same as always.

I’m sure the governor has no influence on the current state of health care in you state. How many years has she been in charge again? lol, you’re the fvcking clown.

What are her priorities? It appears that other states are doing a better job.

She turned down federal money to provide food for school kids.

We have very little trouble recruiting FWIW. Many cite the low cost of living, low crime rate and overall quality of the school options and that this is a good area to raise children are commonly mentioned attractors.

Certain specialties have many more issues to be sure. Hospitalists, radiology, GI, neurosurgery as examples. Dont know much about the FP area these days but presume that is an issue as well.

A lot of naysayers here regarding Iowa.

But those that mention Iowa as a state as being the main factor in recruiting are mistaken. Other factors are in play, failure to train enough docs in certain specialties locally. Certain specialties being less attractive locally due to pay, another. As a NSG, one can make a lot more money elsewhere for example. Lastly, the University can be hard to recruit against often times as well. Better benefits, better hours for many of the specialties anyway.

But yes, anything we can do to get more quality doctors here I am all for. Loan repayment etc.

This topic should be revisited every single time one suggests single payor healthcare. We will really have recruiting trouble then. Just look at Great Britain as an example.

Government, well run, could regulate those things you mention. Of course, when those in Government are bribed by the owners of health care systems and insurance companies NOT to regulate any of that. This is where it leads. It could easily be worse soon too. Kim's friends in Washington, including every rep and senator sent from this state are going to try their best to repeal the ACA. It's far from perfect, but when your premiums rise and your pre-existing condition coverage disappears maybe you MAGA dumbasses while finally understand that you voted for a shit sandwich and forced it on the rest of us.

Unless you're living around Iowa City, your medical care isn't going to be good. Have fun Iowa.
This is patently false. Lots of good healthcare to be found outside of Iowa City. UP and Mercy in Des Moines. QC, Allen in Waterloo, Mercy and UP Cedar Rapids. Even Ames and Mason City pretty good.

Tories did to the NHS what Republicans do here. Underfund something that is imperfect but provides decent service and results only to bitch about why those underfunded programs break. Then they privatize said programs and hand over lucrative, unregulated operating contracts to the people that donate to err bribe them. Everything then costs more for less service, but Kim and the rest get their bribes and keep their power.

She did, yes. However, I could have sworn this thread was about federal money to help retain doctors.

This is the part of the thread where Lucas ordinarily would chastise you for talking about oranges when everyone else is talking about apples. But since you’re on the same team he’ll let it slide.

But how will she use the $$? She and the legislature have removed the State Auditor from the equation. Honestly, Kim has not been very forthcoming with how she spends money… we are still waiting for her numbers about how much $$ privatization of MEDI Aid has saved Iowa taxpayers…5 years ago.

LoL. Not MAGA. Tired of people constantly bitching.

You guys are so predictable. You started out incensed that she asked for the money in the first place. Then I pointed out that the federal government has made money available to all states for this purpose and Reynolds is simply applying for Iowa’s fair share. So now you’ve all pivoted to grumbling about a laundry list of other grievances.

Luke might just as well have titled this thread “Hey everyone, let’s all bitch about Kim for awhile.”

Pretty sure this was understood from the start. The complaint isn't that she's asking for help. The complaint is that she's done such a useless job in this state that she let it get this bad in the first place.

A full third of Iowa counties don't have a single OBGYN doctor. You know how messed up that is?
Do you know about malpractice and call?

Malpractice for FP to do OB has become out of reach for most family docs to continue OB.

If you want a FT OB then you really need 4. No one wants can do call every day and the volume isnt there for 4 in most counties.

This isnt my field so other may comment but thats my understanding of what limits this.

Consolidation of care in bigger communities is what is now the norm. A rural state like Iowa can no longer support all 99 counties having OB coverage full time.

I think she is one of the best governors we have had in my lifetime. I dont' care if you agree.

Fact is, your party and philosophy has failed. On a federal level, state, and now local as demonstrated in LA.

The biggest shitholes in this country are controlled by Democrats. You ran a campaign just a few months ago and were rejected time and time again. You may think your way is the right way. fact is, everything you believe is wrong. This is a right leaning country right now and you can blame the failures in California over the years, Illinois and now recently Biden, for where we are at.

How is Biden or California to blame for Iowa not having a single OBGYN in a third of our counties? When does our governor ever have to face the music for her failings?
