Kinnick Stadium / New Stadium poll

In the brave new big money world we are set on course too. Stadium desire??

North end zone is a much better viewing experience than the west and east sides. Which is sad, end zone seats should not be better that the sideline seats.

After the south end is complete I would but modern seating in the west and east side and accept the fact Americans are fatter and make the seats wider. Sometimes you need to alternate between one person slid up so far their ass is barley touching anything and the next person has to be slid all the way back.

Or, do girth checks and refuse entry to huge people if they don’t have to two tickets.

Ok, where is the location of shown seating?

I recall reading somewhere that 75ish% of the seating at Nebraska it outside the 20 yard lines.

RE the girth: Do you recall how tight it was before the re-seating in 2006? Brutal. The average weight of an adult male was around 160 lbs in 1960.... 180 in 1990 and it's close to 200 now. I can't believe some of the 1/2 ton families I see walking around.

Is there a position posted for "ass measurer" for game days? Or would the Per Mar / Aramark people get to do that?

Wish could have a phone app to order concessions.

Allow some enterprising individuals to deliver food to seats like an in stadium Grub Hub.

Rebuilding south stands like the north pretty much accomplishes the same thing as building an entirely new stadium for a fraction of the cost. New bathrooms, etc. And putting food trucks in the space created by doing that along with other family game day activities would also work really well.

You are probably right though that the U has been keeping that Mormon Trek parcel in their pocket in anticipation of the hospital eventually demanding the stadium space for expansion. Though I'm now certain the publicity from the Wave has permanently killed any desire for a stadium relocation.

I'm 48 years old and the "The hospital is going to force the football team out of Kinnick" talk has been going on my whole life and probably longer; with the wave, I don't see it happening.

As others have said I'd love to see the south EZ look like the north but I don't see that happening for some time as it's only 20 years old.

There was no long term planning with athletics department. Barta f'd it up even more. What I'm getting at is parking. There is not enough parking around Carver and Kinnick. If you want to see how to do it, go to Columbus. They have it right

I may take some grief for this, but I like the South EZ and would keep it as is. We have had season tix there since the remodel in 06.
Easy in/out from our tailgate on Melrose and as mentioned in the past, it was a major upgrade from what things were before. No super steep steps (for us boomers) and plenty of leg room. Ok, I admit I would love to have individual seats instead of the benches. For now we just get seatbacks to help hold our space.
Plus, they don't charge us any extra per season ticket, since we are sitting in the cheap seats. A remodel would probably add that requirement.

True, I've heard it too.

But the hospital always had other plots available. Now...they've gobbled up everything else around them. The stadium and surrounding lots are all that's left. Imagine the cost of demolishing Kinnick and prepping that site for new construction. It would be enormous.

Maybe instead of a tape measure to measure hind ends, you just have some portable seats at check in and you make the questionable ones try to sit in the seat to see if they fit.

Was that way well before Barta.

About 10 years ago I would have voted for a new stadium…. If they could replace the seats on each side and replicate the North end zone for the South end zone … the noise would be insane … I love the history of the stadium.

Yes, I think they should move it west on Melrose, west of 380 where we all could enjoy the smells of the Johnson County Landfill wafting through the stadium. I believe when they were talking about renovating, or building a new stadium they did talk about the land just to the west of Finkbine.

My only complaint about the current Kinnick is that I want to be able at halftime; to take a leak, get some food and a beer and be back in my seat by the start of the 3rd quarter.......not possible now.

How much of an increase in the cost of those tickets are you willing to accept to help pay for the new stadium?
Not sure, would need the details. Basketball went from the Field House to a brand new Carver.

Tastes and preferences are changing by decade, so they need to be thinking what will people desire 20 years down the road to get them to keep showing up and new fans to attend.

Sell naming rights, etc.

I believe the underlying premise of this poll was that with the new TV/media riches about to kick in, how would you use those new funds. Nothing about increasing tix prices to pay for anything.

If ticket prices were increased no more than 5% it wouldn't change too many opinions.
However, if we're talking a 15-20-25-XX % increase to help pay for any of it, then I think the overwhelming majority of fans would be just fine leaving Kinnick as is.

For those who have been to many of the new stadiums or newer stadiums (Lucas Oil or US Bank or Jerry World or SoFi, etc and looks like Bears will have a new one) did you walk in them for the first time and say man this place sucks!!!

Lol. Okay Boomer (and I am nearly one of those). Screw the future. Only live in the now for me.
I'm 36 boomer. F*** them kids. You didn't see my generation ruining the traditions of CFB. In fact we came up in the greatest time for the sport.

Not to mention, it's still being ruined by the 40, 50, 60, and 70 yr old geezers in suits making decisions for college athletes...................just saying.

:D

Bring back the pee troughs. Way more efficient.

As for the hospital space argument, the Fieldhouse is going under the wrecking ball at some point in the future. That should give the hospital a good amount of space. Also, only a matter of time before South Quad is gone and they could probably go after Slater Hall, which could be rebuilt next to the new pharmacy building, to expand onto the other side of Grand Ave. All of that would save Kinnick Stadium for a half a century or longer.

Them taking down all those gyms/rec areas would be problematic unless the university has plans to make up for that.

The newer facility on the east side of the river, while nice, was only meant to "add" to what they already had......not take over for it.

Of course, I've also been removed from Iowa City for almost 15 years now, so I have no idea what they're planning for the future.

All I know is the hospital doesn't need to keep buying up every square piece of land around Kinnick on the west side.
