Kinnick Stadium / New Stadium poll

In the brave new big money world we are set on course too. Stadium desire??

For those who have been to many of the new stadiums or newer stadiums (Lucas Oil or US Bank or Jerry World or SoFi, etc and looks like Bears will have a new one) did you walk in them for the first time and say man this place sucks!!!
No, but I also wouldn’t trade Kinnick for any of them.

Nobody thinks a new stadium would suck, but it would never be Kinnick Stadium. I can be in the worst seat at Kinnick, and be closer to the field than 50% of the seats in all of those places. It can’t be replicated. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

We’re not talking about Ryan Field. It’s Kinnick ****ing Stadium. Kinnick, the Big House, Ohio Stadium, Camp Randall, Happy Valley. These are some of the last great things that still make College football great.

I seriously can’t believe anyone would even entertain the idea. It’s insane.

I may take some grief for this, but I like the South EZ and would keep it as is. We have had season tix there since the remodel in 06.
Easy in/out from our tailgate on Melrose and as mentioned in the past, it was a major upgrade from what things were before. No super steep steps (for us boomers) and plenty of leg room. Ok, I admit I would love to have individual seats instead of the benches. For now we just get seatbacks to help hold our space.
Plus, they don't charge us any extra per season ticket, since we are sitting in the cheap seats. A remodel would probably add that requirement.

I have sat in the SEZ and NEZ probably a half dozen times each (fight for Iowa pass) in the past 3 or 4 years. It’s night and day different from the fan experience and not in favor of the SEZ. When I would get SEZ seats, I’d almost always move to NEZ or East side after the first quarter.

The seat contributions in the NEZ are nearly identical to the SEZ, minus student section and band. The corners in the NEZ are almost like sitting on the East or West sidelines. You sit high up and close to the action that you have a very good view of the entire field. That is not the case in the SEZ, especially in the corner sections.

I’ll give you the steepness of the NEZ, so you better watch your alcohol intake and your step. But there’s only like 17 or 18 rows in the upper deck, so it’s not that much of a hike once you get to the upper deck. The steepness for me is a good thing because it keeps fans closer to the action.

Traditions and nostalgia are out the window.

I clearly remember many on here complaining why go there when you can sit at home with a 70" tv, a refrigerator and a bathroom in 70 degrees and watch the game. Trends all around the country are for more, more, more comfort and entertainment for the fans to keep them coming and bring on brand new young fans.

This and adding a thin strip of luxury boxes or something to the East grandstand. The south endzone is such a lazy design failure.
They did an awesome job on the press box. Then dropped the ball on the south. I say tear down the hospital for more tailgating space.

We've got arguably the most intimate stadium environment in college football. Yet, I agree that the south endzone makeover could have been better. Tearing it down obviously isn't going to happen for a long time. If anything, I'd like to see the gaps in the south corners walled off with decorative brick. Walls as high as the east and west stands that curve and connect to the south endzone structure. With arches of course. It could have ribbon boards on the inside, banners, screens, enormous Tigerhawks... you name it. Enclosing Kinnick entirely would only make it better

I voted leave it as is, but wouldn’t be totally opposed to an overhaul of the concessions/bathrooms. Also would probably serve them well to make sure the home locker room is completely modern and spacious for recruiting purposes.

The south end is terrible. It’s pretty boring sitting over there. They made it way too flat. Unfortunately, they need to tear it all down and replicate the north. Obviously, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. They ruined the atmosphere on that side of the stadium.

Future generations of sports fans won’t care. They want conveniences.
Then they just won’t go at all, if that’s the case.

People have been talking “future generations want X” for thousands of years. They’re never correct.

The 1928 announcement of Iowa Stadium with its planned appearance.
That whole paper is worth reading through. The stadium picture is just a potential proposal, not what was agreed upon. But also pictures of the completed Fieldhouse and University Hospital. Announcements on other buildings and news stories. Names like Seashore and Jessup that any student should recognize. Plus, we were playing Minnesota for homecoming that next day. A Minnesota team that includes Bronco Nagurski. Pretty cool stuff.

The east stands are bland and and need some character...maybe add a smaller upper deck (without affecting view of Childrens Hospital). I'm guessing not architectually possible with the limited space next to the hospital. If not, then a digitial ribbon running the entire length of it north to south would be cool.

Lol. If you cannot see huge change taking place I don’t know what to tell you.
