Dear AD’s thinking of making a new hire I’ll save you your coaching search firm fee-go DIRECTLY to Ames, IA and get Matty Campbell FAST!

Matt Campbell is going to have lots of rich suitors this winter. But I don't necessarily think that means he bolts.

I don’t make up the rules Andy, but let me assure you—enjoy this team and this coach, in particular, while you can. He’s gone.

Kirk only likes the elite programs forgetting what a poor quarterback he was at Ohio State.

Herbstreit is acting like he knows something but I myself remain unconvinced.

Campbell will stay in Ames. Just my hunch.

If I lived closer I’d Egg his house so he’d leave the state.

i have a feeling Herbstreit is hearing a lot of interesting tid bits; think of all of the schools that will be looking for a new coach: Nebby, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc etc

others: Florida State, Florida

but if a prime job does not open, i think he stays put

I think there are a few people in his line of work that understand bigger is not always better. He can sustain long term employment and stability with out the pressures of blueblood programs. I believe the last two coaches in Iowa city would concur.

Again, just a hunch on my part but I think Matt Campbell will be in Ames Iowa for quite some time.

Remember when teams were allegedly coming after Paul Rhoads following his "so proud" season? And remember how things turned out for him in the years after that? Hard to sustain success at a school like Iowa State. So Campbell can either strike while the iron is hot and leave, or stick around and accept the challenge of making ISU football somewhat respectable (6-7 win type years, a bowl game). My money's on the latter.

I'm guessing Matt Campbell isn't worried about sustainability. He would be handed a mountain of cash to coach at a big if offered a job. The last two coaches in Iowa City? Are you kidding me? When was the last time Kirk Ferentz has been mentioned for another job? long term employment exists for ferentz becausse he has an absurd contract and no suitors for other employment. Gene Chizik was smart enough to realize that Ames Iowa isn't anywhere near the top. I'm guessing Matt Campbell is smart enough to realize that as well.

His contract is kinda confusing to read sounds like 2 mill for 17 500 g bonus for 6 wins 100 of that to assistants then 1.2 mil each of next 5 seasons if he gets to 8 and is offered a bug gig I think he leaves unless isu comes up with more money do you blame him I think guy is for real

Part of it is where do you want to live . Where is Campbell from? Does he have kids at a moveable age? Iowa is not usually a destination state and it’s hard to get non Iowans or midwesterners to stay. Whether it’s your football coach or at a corporate position.

Hope your hunch is wrong regarding MC staying for quite some time. I’ve been concerned with him since I saw his attention to recruiting. Now it appears the guy can coach too.

His recruiting ties are in Ohio. One thing about Tennessee is that it's only 4.5 hours from Cincinnati to Knoxville. Kentucky has also has recruited tremendously in Ohio due to Vince Morrow and Stoops.

As all have said, it's about what he and his family want. He will be a folk hero for the next 10 years by winning at Ferentz-type levels in Ames. If that satisfies him, it's not a bad thing. I would be more worried about the Big 12 conference future, etc. if I was him. If he's patient, however, he'll get a really good gig this year or in the future.

How has that worked out for Chizik?

This is my guess as well...I'm sure Campbell knows the sad history of Iowa State coaches who bolted Ames for a bigger job.

Maybe I am confused at the sad history of those who bolted? The two that won national championships elsewhere or the one that has 4 big ten titles?

The others who didn’t bolt since the 70s - didn’t have a head coaching job after. Sure you can Chizik but a national championship is what it is (of course it was Cam Newton but the ring is the ring)

I would be beyond shocked if he isn't the ISU coach next year. This is a building year; next year's team should be considerably better. Any job offers he gets this year won't be better than what he could get in the future.

I would assume he would go to tOSU, but that job isn't likely to be open any time soon. Nebraska? Tennessee? Arkansas?

My primary concern is keeping the assistants, especially the DC. Iowa State's defense since the Iowa game has been extremely good, especially in the second half. Akron, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Tech scored, respectively, 0, 3, 7, 0, and 7 points after intermission.

I'm not going to worry about it; I'm much happier hearing the ISU haters (including Herbstreit) talk about how everybody wants our coach than hearing about how much a buyout will cost us if we fire him.

The sad history? Winning national championships? I need some explanation on that one.

I'm guessing he meant sad history from Iowa State's perspective, but I'm not sure why Campbell would care about that. He doesn't have any ties to the school or the state, does he?

The Tennessee job will open up. While the SEC west is a Juggernaut, the East is not a bad place to be.

Kind if think this talk is a but premature. He's having one good season. He could lose the next three straight and this talk goes away. I really don't think a program worth leaving for is going to jump on him. Yeah Auburn jumped on Chizik with no success. But he was gone shortly after Cam Newton was gone.

If he has a 7 or 8 win season next year yeah he'll be gone

No kidding on the first part. It's not like the rest of the schedule is a walk in the park. Home games with TCU and Okie Lite, road games at West Virginia, Kansas State and Baylor. Cyclones will be underdogs in four of the final five games.

The things Campbell said what attracted him to ISU were not about fame and fortune but about atmosphere and growth. I think he meant what he said and yes, ISU will pay him more. He will be in Ames for longer than people think.

True but Campbell has won more games THIS year than Chizik won in 2 years here. Chizik was a terrible coach that walked into a ready make team with Cam Newton at Auburn. Once he had to build it on his own, he was fired a few years later. We have a solid nucleus coming back and the best recruiting we have seen for some time going on. He has a much better chance of sustaining a program that can be competitive and go to bowl games than Chiz ever did.

i just wonder why Herbstreit would tweet this in the first place. Why couldn't he just compliment him on a job well done without saying something so strong as he is gone?

Herbstreit originally tweeted a compliment to Campbell and by extension to ISU. He basically said Campbell is becoming the hottest young prospect out there. My guess is that his subsequent posts were primarily digs at the ISU fans who overreacted to his original statement and went ballistic on him.

Agree, thats what most ISU fans are wondering right now.
