Kirk Herbstreit on Iowa's State's Head Coach: "He's gone."

Will Campbell stay in Ames? No one truly knows outside of Matt and his wife. I sure hope he does, but no one really knows where his heart is.

The pissing contest about which conference is better is laughable. I'm a Big12 homer, so here is my take. No one in the Big12 gets to hide. You can argue that KU is historically awful, and Baylor is awful this year, and that no one plays defense (which is not true this year - see ISU/TCU game). Fine.

My barometer is College GameDay. Like them or not, those guys are 1000x more informed on college football than anyone here. When they agreed this morning that "top to bottom the Big12 is strongest conference this year", that's all I need to here.

That's laughable about the big 12 and so is ESPN. They are paid to rep certain leagues they pay money for. The Big 12 has had a solid year and are playing more defense than I've seen in years. Let's keep in mind though this is a conference that signed exactly zero 5 star recruits this past season and has had recruiting issues for several years due to all the instability shown. This is narrowing the gap between the best and worst programs. So you are seeing parity and surprises.

NCAA strength of schedule has Big 10 teams at 1,2,15,21,21,24,26,29,32,39,55,62,68 and 76. Big 12 at 5,6,10,11,16,22,31,47,50 and 91. Easy to see the Big 12 is tougher. Half the conference in the top 25 sos and 9/10 in top 50. And watch the gap widen over the next few weeks. For example Penn State has those juggernauts from Maryland, Rutgers and Nebraska still to worry about while Oklahoma plays OK State, TCU and West Virginia. This isn't even a debate to those that watch all of college football instead of just Iowa or the Big 10.
First off please link that. Also, the Big 12 has the 2 worst teams in CFB- Baylor and Kansas. I also provided you with every teams out of conference schedule- showed you there were only 4 teams that had a winning record and of those Big 12 won 1 of those games. And another poster pointed out they are 4-6 overall. I don't give a crap who Oklahoma has left because they are in a crap conference...to compare conferences you have to look at the results in the non conference schedule.
Big Ten Teams beat:
1) Texas
2) Florida
3) Pitt
B10 East is a beast. B10 West is Wisconsin and that's it. The rest of the B10 West sucks. Period. Doesn't matter if Campbell stays or goes, really. Iowa is a mediocre B10 team as long as Ferentz is coach. After that? Who knows? They could end up being a lot worse. But Iowa State right now looks like a program heading in the right direction. Iowa looks more and more like Minnesota every day. Oh, and Iowa would probably lose to over half the B12 teams this year so your argument is irrelevant. B10 West, outside of Wisconsin, are like B12 bottom feeders this year. They just suck. Which is good, because Iowa gets to play Purdue and Nebraska yet. So 7-5 is a possibility this year. Wow, what an achievement that will be.
Shhhhhhhhh.....just shhhhhh

Clay Travis said yesterday he thinks Arkansas will go after Matt Campbell. He also has Frost going to Florida.

What are the advantages of coaching at Arkansas? Any pluses for quality of life?

Tennessee is also a possible landing spot. IF cyclones beat okie state Saturday that puts them in drivers seat for b12 championship game. Campbell is playing with house money at that point. He can name his price then.

Especially due to his buyout, I still think he is more likely than not to stay for at least one more year. Every win he gets at this point ups the chance someone at least makes a strong push for him.

I think what hurts the Big 12 is just 10 teams and the lack of divisions. Rumor has it that sometime down the road there will be just 4 power conferences each having 16 teams. The conference that will be gone is the Big 12. Texas and Oklahoma would be the 1st teams looking for greener pastures. It could be very hard to keep those 2 teams satisfied if they think they can make more money in a bigger better conference. The Big 12 is nothing without those 2 big name teams.

I'm guessing Matt Campbell isn't worried about sustainability. He would be handed a mountain of cash to coach at a big if offered a job. The last two coaches in Iowa City? Are you kidding me? When was the last time Kirk Ferentz has been mentioned for another job? long term employment exists for ferentz becausse he has an absurd contract and no suitors for other employment. Gene Chizik was smart enough to realize that Ames Iowa isn't anywhere near the top. I'm guessing Matt Campbell is smart enough to realize that as well.
Smarter than you, I'd guess.

The Big 12 is not the best conference but the lack of defense narrative has been proven wrong year after year with P5 out of conference games.

ESPN hates the Big XII.

Jimmy Johnson was also involved somehow with ISU. Earl Bruce who left ISU and did well at Ohio State.
Gene Chizik also won a national title.

Jimmy Johnson was on the Majors staff. So was Jackie Sherrill. Other ISU assistants who have done pretty well are Pete Carroll and Mack Brown. Another half-dozen have been head coaches with mixed success.

He’s gone! He will either go somewhere and make a name for himself or fail in 3-4 years then get hired as an assistant coach at a big school....not a horrible circumstance either way in my opinion.
