Kirk Herbstreit on Iowa's State's Head Coach: "He's gone."

About the only job that would tempt him away is the Ohio State HC position...and that looks to be in solid and stable hands. Mid levels like Tennesse or even Florida State aren't really a threat...as, believe it or not...Iowa State will match any thing they can pay right down to the assistant level. But more importantly, Campbell likely DOES want the OSU job...or at least something comparable (in the Midwest, where he is comfortable) like a Penn State, Oklahoma or perhaps even Texas. Anything less, and he will simply stay and keep building what he's started, an act which will only serve to raise his stock when the opening he wants at an elite midwestern school comes open.

By all accounts, he and his family LOVE the Ames area...unlike guys like Chizik who reportedly despised it...and he sees himself as a builder, a man who wants to leave a true legacy. So while I would agree that he will in time move on to something bigger, its not going to be this year or even next season...perhaps after 4-5 years of sustained success he will be lured...less by money...than by the challenge of running an elite program like Ohio State.
isu dude to ohio st? are you smoking the crack?

If I was an AD at a top tier program I would most likely want a coach to prove himself for more than 1 year before making that hire. Also, there's a lot of football to be played yet this season. Iowa State could crash and burn.

No blue blood is going to come calling after one good year. The coach at Ames would have to string together a couple good years, beat Iowa, and win a conference championship first. So he's not done one of those things yet. When Iowa won in Ames this year I thought ISU looked like a 6-6, or 7-5 bowl team, so far I have seen nothing to change that assessment. I still believe ISU will win at least one more game, and get to a bowl game.

I do not for one second believe they are ready to go on a run, finish 10-2, and win the conference as some delusional clown fans have suggested to me since beating Tech. I feel very bad for them frankly, because I know as a Hawk fan what it feels like to have that prize dangled in front of you only to be ripped away at the last possible moment.

TCU is coming to town Saturday, and they will be bringing with them a heavy dose of reality for Clown Nation. Just remember Clown fans you can't lose what you never really had.

Ohio St opened as a 7pt fav over Pedo U
So? PSU has the better season and higher ranking right now. OSU was -8 over Oklahoma. Furthermore, using Okie beating OSU as the sole reason to downgrade the big 10, while ignoring Maryland beating Texas, Iowa beating ISU, rankings, and just about everything else, is just moronic. But after reading your last post, makes perfect sense.

Do people really think he's leaving after this year? Yes or no? Save me the mind-reading.

Honestly, we will have to see how the season plays out, who hires new coaches, etc etc. Doubtful IMO. The biggest concern any coach should have at ISU right now, would be the landscape of the Big 12 in a couple years.

Remember when teams were allegedly coming after Paul Rhoads following his "so proud" season? And remember how things turned out for him in the years after that? Hard to sustain success at a school like Iowa State. So Campbell can either strike while the iron is hot and leave, or stick around and accept the challenge of making ISU football somewhat respectable (6-7 win type years, a bowl game). My money's on the latter.
You mean almost like Iowa?

Why would this matter to anyone further than a 300 mile radius from Ames?

Well, this isn't exactly Shermanesque, but it beats hell out of "no comment."

Campbell said today that fans have nothing to worry about when it comes to him leaving, and added vis-a-vis the Herbstreit comment:

“The frustration part of comments like that are that it discredits this university and this football (program). ... We’ve got just as much opportunity to do elite things as anybody in college football," Campbell said, "and I think we’re proving it one day at a time right now.”

Campbell said Iowa State’s recent success, a 5-2 record and 3-1 Big 12 mark in his second season, are just part of his plans for the Cyclones. The Cyclones are ranked No. 25 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.

If Campbell were to leave after this season, it would cost about $9 million to buy out his contract. But Campbell said he's intent on building Iowa State's program.

“That’s why we came here ... to build this program and we haven’t even started yet,” Campbell said. “All we’ve done is laid a foundation to this thing.”

"We" I think Iowa State better be ready to pay to keep the OC around I know him and Campbell are buddies but money and opportunity talk

I'm more concerned about the DC, but yes, you have a very good point. I think one of the big pluses about bringing in a head coach instead of an assistant is that he can bring a proven, familiar staff with him. Although this OC was not his OC at Toledo. The guy who had that job at Toledo is now the head coach at Toledo. The current ISU OC was OL coach there (and has the same duties now).

Lone clone we're just talking football here so do you think Campbell got a huge break when Parks takes a leave. IMO the backup is really good

Yeah, everyone has been talking about Campbell, but that QB has been dynamite since he took over. I don't remember that ever happening at Iowa or ISU before.

No blue blood is going to come calling after one good year...

Normally I would agree with your statement, but I think there are going to be a number of high profile jobs open this year and I don't see a deep crop of probable candidates out there. I think even though Campbell has only been at ISU for a couple of years that he will be a hot commodity this year on the "coaching carousel".

I have no idea if he will leave or not, I am just saying that he will be given strong consideration by a range of programs IMO.

Agreed. I think it unlikely he leaves this year, but a ton depends on what openings there are, maybe he gets caught up in the dominoes as the carousel turns.

If he does well, I’ll be surprised he doesn’t go elsewhere in 3-5 years. Remember he’s 36 years old or so. He can afford to wait and see but not forever.

Qb has shown great poise and played within the system. Improved defense, special teams and offense have helped take the pressure off him.

Kempt has done a masterful job, and he's getting better. I didn't think he had a strong arm, but he threw a few downfield Saturday. The best thing about him, of course, is his poise.

Whether the departure of Park was a break or not, I dunno. Compared to if he had stayed and continued to play the way he did against Texas? Absolutely. But compared to if he had played the way he played in the past and was expected to play? Not so much. The coaches aren't idiots. There's a reason Park had the QB job all to himself.

Well, at least we won't be losing to the likes of Northwestern and their potent offense.

No way I'm I calling the coaches Idiots they recruited and coach this kempt up but it's hard for me to believe this kid wasn't the best QB in spring ball but I guess he wasn't because Campbell was all in on Parks.

It isn't as if Campbell didn't know Kempt -- he recruited him for Toledo out of high school. And while Kempt is a walk-on at ISU, he went to Oregon State on scholarship. For that matter, the kid who's backing him up now, redshirt freshman from Georgia, has reportedly looked good in practice and did a nice mop-up job against Kansas. He was officially the backup for Park, with Kempt listed third on the depth chart, before Park disappeared.

I know you weren't calling the coaches idiots. Didn't mean to imply you were. But clearly it was their decision after watching the players for two years that Park was unquestionably the better choice to play.

The only threat to "steal" away Campbell would be a top 5 university. Anything below that level and there is almost zero chance of him leaving over the next 3 years. He WOULD leave immediately for an Ohio State level job, particularly as he has roots in Ohio. Nebraska...that's laughable.....ditto for Tennessee. So, unless Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson or USC have an opening...its just not worth worrying about.

What caliber of job do you think ISU is that he’d only leave for a top 5 job?

While I don’t expect him to leave this year, depending on the jobs available it wouldn’t shock me either. To consider ISU as any sort of destination-type job, especially for a coach who has no ties to the state, is laughable.

He’s won one big game so far. I think you’re a little early in anointing him as the next great coach. Remember when jim Walden won at Oklahoma? And if you think Tennessee is not a major step up from isu then you are not knowledgeable about college football
