I’m addition to everything already discussed in other threads about how our AD is kind of standing in the way of our NIL efforts, the part that I found interesting is how he said he has to go to a lot of our current players and basically pitch them on why they should stick with Iowa for next year as opposed to listening to other NIL offers other teams are making them.

Obviously it’s not supposed to be allowed for other teams to recruit our current roster with NIL offers but I think we all know it happens.

Lastly he said we are going to need roughly $10m annually to be competitive. He said some of our peer schools like Nebraska are going to come in north of that and we can’t afford to fall too far behind.

To be fair, Barta is responsible for compliance across programs so he has to make sure that the NIL efforts are within NCAA and legal guidelines. Blaming him for doing his job doesn't seem fair.

I can't tell people to donate but if we don't come up with the 10 then it sounds like our football program has no chance at all.

Why are other schools not following the rules do you think? I'm very irritated to hear other schools are contacting our players and using nil to entice them away. Maybe you should take over for the completely incompetent ncaa. I'd love to have someone like you in charge after some of our discussions.

10 million a year?!!! This is absurd. I have no idea what Iowa athletics gets a year but to contribute 10 million just to retain and recruit players is out of control! this needs some serious tweeking by NCAA or congress. 10 mil. a year could be better served by charitable contributions.

If you follow him on twitter, he has been tweeting out examples of other ADs doing what he wishes Barta would. Here is one example. If Barta really believes Title 9 means he can’t help, then he needs to go to the BigTen office and have them state that it’s a BigTen policy to not do what other ADs are doing. As it is, we have a self-imposed policy that is causing us to fall behind our peer institutions.

It is absurd and should absolutely be fact checked. As NOs the tax returns will be public. We’ll see how much of it is Grift, and what’s reality. Think grift, not reality

The B1G Office would smile, and say "Sorry, Gary, it's an NCAA issue."

It’s rapidly approaching the point of departure for me. Pretty much don’t watch NFL any more mostly due to all the money. Headed that way here now too. Life is short and probably best in the longer term spending it on other endeavors anyway.

I have on very good authority that Harbaugh and Howard informed the Michigan collective that a "base" of $40M is needed. They were basically advocating for an "endowment" which could grow and fund payments to UM athletes going forward.

Fall is some of the best days to go fishing. I may have to get back into that.

Why are you assuming that it is other schools that are making the offers? Are there any rules that would prevent Heinrichs from, say, contacting an OL currently on Ole Miss' roster and saying that there may be money making opportunities for him if he were to transfer to Iowa?

Gotta be fair here . . . remember the stories about McNamara being rumored to be transferring to Iowa. Those started before the portal opened. McNamara was "in the fold" almost immediately after UM beat Purdue in the B1G championship game.

You think that McNamara had been contacted by someone? Someone who could offer NIL money? Hmmmmmm.

I would go by the swarm specifically saying that players are being contacted and nil is being used to try and get them to transfer via the portal. I took the interview for what was said.

I know Iowa is a conservative state, but why do our athletic programs want to remain behind the rest of the country? With the new additions to the conference, we may as well just resign ourselves to the basement.

Best of luck with collecting $10M.

There will end up being 2 divisions. This is unsustainable. When your team doesn't make the 12 team playoffs the fans will demand the coach be fired or NIL groups asking for more cash. Results will be total burnout of college sports to some fans. $%&!

If rumors are true Georgia spent more on 2 recruits than the 10 mill
We could easily get for the football and basketball teams

True, athletes will sue the school for what will be unfair spending of NIL money in female sports. Saying the school is supporting this through their involvement with the NIL groups with proof coming from the NIL records to the sport. @#$%!

"Players are being contacted."
"NIL is being used as an enticement to leave."
Schools don't have NIL money to spend.
Collectives have NIL money to spend.

Again . . . how do you think that McNamara was enticed to transfer to Iowa? You think that Kirk Ferentz initiated that contact or do you think that it was someone outside of the football program and possibly affiliated with an NIL?

Can't complain about other collectives contacting guys on Iowa's roster if collectives benefitting Iowa are contacting players on other rosters trying to convince them to transfer to Iowa.

Barta's lack of support has caused me (out of state alum who is not a season ticket holder) to get off my a** and join the Swarm. Since I complain about Hawkeye football and basketball (which I have followed for 54 years), I might as well contribute some money more directly to the athletes.

I think McNamara talked with the swarm after he waa told that the university doesn't handle nil. I've seen nothing or heard nothing that makes me think Iowa did anything even close to outside the rules. KF is extremely organized about how to handle nil. He is not contacting anyone outside the portal during recruitment sessions. He hands info to a student that has the swarm info on it and tells them the university isn't part of the nil.

It has little to do with leanings. Better question is this an area that one needs to lead in…hardly addresses the pressing issues of our day

Ethics and the NCAAs record in punishment for those who cheat.

Lol NIL groups are now going to have to reach out to all the athletes for an interview to see what it would take to retain them. And with the AD no involvement do they really care if that athlete moves on.

Where a ExD and inv mgr of a collective get a salary and fee check. 990s will be fascinating for these. You’ll see expenses, portfolio balance, revenue, who’s involved, how much bluster vs reality is there in all this posturing. There will be grift, there will be abuse)hopefully not with the Iowa version)

$10M just for football?

Also somehow KF would need to know what cash is available to get for him once he arrives. Dirty secrets everywhere.

McNamara was a grad transfer so he technically didn't have to wait to enter the transfer I believe he said in his interview with Jordan Palmer. Spoke how he was able to get a head start on the process because of that with contact time periods.

Not only that, the NIL guy has to know who they should offer that Kirk would even be interested in. NIL can offer whoever, but doesn't mean Kirk gives the thumbs up. And also understand the priorities in terms of needs, because maybe you "overpay" for a guy because you need him above all else.

Someday the schools with have a GM like the pros do.

At this point, I'm begging the NFL to expand to 42 teams. Need to weed out the high level money makers.

If it means watering down the college product to tame NIL, so be it.
