Last Chance U- M. Sargent mention

He gets better. Against the defending national champs, Garden City, the QB uses the N word. An automatic two game suspension. The official doesn’t eject him, but chooses to warn the QB at half. The QB’s reaction to the ref he mumbles, “alright F you”. Still doesn’t get ejected.

Also, what started the scuffle that lead to the N word being exchanged was all started by the QB. Independence is taking a knee to end the half and the QB takes the snap and just stands there. After a few seconds, a D line breaks through the line and tackles him. Everyone gets pissy.
I said this to myself about 5 times while watching the first 3 episodes (especially regarding the sourpuss QB) ... Iowa would never recruit a kid like that ... talking smack, pouting, swearing at the ref, arguing with his coach ... If they did have someone like that they wouldn't be on the team for very long ...

I had watched his IWCC videos, but never his high school tape. To summarize, the entire video is him making one guy miss and then running for a long touchdown.

Really intrigued by his running style. His stride reminds me of one of the all-time greats (not going to say who for fear of being accused of ridiculous hyperbole).
Around 8.5 ypc is pretty solid. I would imagine that red flags concerning academics are arguably what impacted his recruitment. Also, his career numbers are what some guys put up in a single season ... thus, he may not have been "the guy" at his high school for that many seasons. The JUCO production suggests that the positives concerning his high school production are more representative than the negatives.

Tavian was on another level. Sargent has a lot of promise, but Tavian had world class speed. If he'd run track, he'd have been among the fastest sprinters in the country his junior and senior years at Bettendorf. He was faster than Tim Dwight, Shaw and Willie Guy. Easily.
He wasn’t faster then Tim. And before you give me the head to head on the playoffs sideline run, I refute that Tim played on both sides of the field where as atavism was only a RB. Tim took a bad angle and Tacian had more gas left. I was proven wrong that Tavian was the better college RB, however.

Yes, he was. They raced at least once in public. Tavian won.

That was more of an OL highlight reel.

Probably be another Butler. That's a compliment as a healthy Butler is quite the back.
Kinda my impression too. Butler was limited in '17 due to injuries too. Not only that - he was running behind an OL that was somewhat cobbled together ... and being coached by a first-year coach.

Mekhi has 3 years to play 3 ... and the OL has pretty impressive talent at OT ... and there's some experience on the interior. Now with Polasek in his 2nd year coaching ... I'm willing to bet that through much of Mekhi's career, he'll be running behind a better line than Butler.

Furthermore, when Butler was with us ... our TEs were still relative newbies as it relates to blocking. In contrast, Mekhi will be benefitting from much more mature blockers at TE too.

I like Iowa's RBs ... should be a good group!

Add bad grades, being a malcontent, etc. whoever gets him out of JUCO will be running a jackass factory

After watching some of the newest season, it really makes me appreciate the type of person that Ferentz recruits. There are some seriously entitled individuals on that JUCO team, and very uncoachable it appears. It makes you wonder how some programs can work with it. I guess they simply let the inmates run the asylum so to speak. We may not have the talent, but the players at Iowa are coachable and quality kids at least, for the most part.

Per KF, full qualifier out of high school, interesting. Sounds like a good kid!

Q: Is Sargent on scholarship?

FERENTZ: He is.

Q: What are your thoughts on him?

FERENTZ: It’s interesting with him, what peaked my attention the most was we were aware of him at Iowa Western and then Kelvin Bell saw him play live in the first week of December. He made the comment once he got back that he thought he was a D1 player and could be a really good running back for us. At that point we didn’t have room and it didn’t make sense for us. Then as we moved forward and we the medical situation with Toks becoming final, it just made sense.

He has been tremendous. He got here in the first week in June and has been a tremendous young man and on top of that, he’s a really good football player.

Q: Does he have his associates? Three years to play two?

FERENTZ: He was a qualifier coming out. He was not there because of eligibility.

Interesting ... he presumably went to the JUCO ranks to gain more recruiting exposure then. Of course, as memory serves, he redshirted his first year with the Reivers. Thus, I'm pretty certain that he has 3 years to play 3.
