Leshon Williams Entering Transfer Portal

This move, honestly, isn't all that surprising. The running back room was always going to see attrition, and with LeShon's injury in camp and the resurgence of KJ, his move makes the most sense since he only has 1 year left to play.
He doesn’t move the needle at all this year. And had he stuck around and played, he wouldn’t even be eligible to play next year.

Unfortunate since he was always a solid player. But it’s best move for him and not much of a loss to Iowa so I’m all for it

Don’t blame him but it’s going to take some getting used to these 4 game and under transfers. Unfortunate side affect to that otherwise good rule.

Get used to it. With the Supreme Court decision essentially requiring removal of any roadblocks/restrictions to athletes making money on their NIL, this was always going to be the end result. The pendulum had swung too far in favor of schools/administrators/coaches and now has swung to far the other way. Hopefully in the next 5-ish years, we can find a middle ground that works.

So this means that he just removes himself from the lineup to use his redshirt year, so he can portal somewhere else?

College athletics is so effed.
So can Iowa pull the Schollies after the semester of those who enter the portal? Seems ridiculous that they have to pay a year of academics when a person chooses to go elsewhere 5 weeks into the season.

I don't care much for this new trend of bailing midseason, but it makes a lot of sense in this case. The big factor being if he played any more, he'd be done at college. Might as well take time to fully heal up, and take a chance at performing well somewhere for a potential scouting profile. I dunno that he'll ever make the NFL but figure he's gotta try, and this is the best way to take that chance.

The downside to having a loaded position like we do in the RB room - the kids aren't gonna sit idly on the bench.

That would be a dick move

It would not be a dick move. The students that have to pay crazy tuition prices should be getting pissed that many athletes (not all) couldn't care less about the FREE education they are getting..

.... But it would be a STUPID and short-sighted move by a program to pull a scholarship over this stuff. Because it'll get used against you in recruiting.

Major college athletics is the Wild West and the athletes are the town outlaws. The NCAA is the local sheriff that can't do sh*t about anything they do.

(Sorry just watched the tombstone doc on Netflix 😄)

Well. Instead of getting mad at the athletes that essentially have full time jobs maybe they should get mad at the system that causes their tuitions to be so high or our government that can't figure out a way to provider higher education for it's citizens like every other developed country.

Saying that. If one of my employees was putting in the work, but wasn't getting the career growth they wanted and expressed that they wanted to leave to do so I'd do everything in my power to make sure they landed on their feet and were able to reach their goals even if it wasn't on my team. Mostly because I'm not a complete ****ing asshole. What's missing in this world is a little empathy.

We are in transition world and we will get to contracts in the next 5 years, so players can't just jump on into a portal. Hope he does well wherever he goes. Always seemed to give it all.

Dont mind him leaving at all. I would rather see what younger guys can do and this gets them more reps. He ran hard but was SLOWWWW AF.. Perhaps Doll gets some snaps this year.

Appreciate what he did last year, especially his final run against the bugeaters, but dude turned into our fourth string this year. He knew he wasn't going to see the field. Wish him luck as long as he doesn't go to anyone in the B1G or the Clowns.

If Leshon has his stuff together, he’ll enter the portal after the regular season ends and be at his new school for the start of the spring semester. Pulling the scholarship would be moot in that case.

However, if a player completely opts out and doesn’t participate in any team activities, practice for example, can the school revoke the scholarship immediately? This is where a player can claim they have a minor, lingering injury and muddy up the situation as well.

The release from Iowa confirming that Williams is entering the transfer portal:

2 UI Student-Athletes Depart Football Team

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Monday that two players have left the team and are planning to enter the transfer portal in December.

Senior running back Leshon Williams (Chicago/Richards HS) and junior wide receiver Kaleb Brown (Chicago/St. Rita HS/Ohio State) both informed Coach Ferentz of their plans on Monday.

“We thank both players for their contributions to the program and wish them the best as they move forward,” Ferentz said.

Williams competed in 32 career games as a Hawkeye, including limited action in three contests this fall.

Brown saw action in 14 games since last season, including limited action in three contests in 2024.

If I were Sullivan, I'd be having similar thoughts. Anyone who has ever played any kind of sport at any level must realize how much it hurts to be nailed to the bench behind a player who is significantly worse than you are. If it were me, I might be inclined to tell KF if he only wants one QB, and it's Cade, then here's my jersey. I'll be transferring. And good luck with that rickety old man at QB. You'll need it. But maybe that's just me . . .

Can you explain in what way BS is significantly better than CM? Stats or videos or actual game plays to back that up? Do you see every practice? Thanks in advance for all of the upcoming info.

I am also not sold on CM but I am interested in your insight.

Not surprising. Might as well transfer to a G5 or FCS school where he can be the man his senior year in hopes of getting attention from NFL scouts, instead of sticking around and competing with guys for playing time that he's fallen behind, on what will likely be an excruciating season for Iowa football.
