Time to finally flush the ISU game. Need something to look forward to. Drake is my second team to the Hawks so I watch them quite a bit.

The Hawks are 2-1 in the Big Four Classic, 1-0 against Drake. Drake is 4-6 on the year, with wins against Western Kentucky and Pepperdine, but losses to Tulane, Bowling Green, DePaul, some others. I still think the Dogs are on an upward trajectory under Coach Giac, but they're still a year away IMO. The lone senior, Karl Madison, is not much of a contributor, so they lose nothing after this year. Their goal this year is to avoid the Thursday night game in the MVC tourney. Anything else is gravy. Next year, I really think they'll compete for top 4 in the Valley.

Now then, this game really should not be close if Iowa comes to play. Drake goes about 11 deep, but there is little in reason behind the rotations. Their top 3 scorers are really the offense and that's pretty much it. At PG is Penn State transfer Graham Woodward. Fast, looks to dish, but is small and is turnover prone by PG standards. At SG is their best offensive player Reed Timmer (Soph). Averaging about 19 points a game (including 30 against DePaul) and hits alot of threes, but his all around game isn't really developed and Clemmons should be able to neutralize him. Abrahamson, NW transfer and Des Moines native, is the third offensive threat. He dropped 41 against Western Kentucky, but he really lacks quickness and gets beat on the dribble. Uthoff should have his way there. CJ Rivers is a super undersized SF and is more about defense than offense. They have a pair of foreign seven footers, Enevold and Olenjizak. Enevold doesn't have a lot of offensive moves and butter fingers, but plays decent defense. Olenjizak is a freshman and a better athlete, but is very turnover prone.

Drake's huge achilles heel is defense. For as small as they are, they play very little zone. Consequently, they get absolutely destroyed on dribble and dish. For Drake to even be competitive, they have to hit about 50% of 3's (I think they're 15th in the nation in 3pt%) and not get completely outdone on the boards. And even then, that may not be enough.

Iowa should roll by 15-20 fairly easily.

Yep. This should be a big win around 20 points. Drake has a couple good scorers but like you mentioned they are a small team. Get the ball down to Uthoff and Woody and work inside out. As long as we shoot well, we should have no problem.

On Drake's side, it would be nice to see them return to viability in the MVC. They had that great season a few years back with Emmenecker. That was a fun team to watch with Keno. It's too bad they haven't been able to continue the run.

I would like to see some of the younger guys, especially Wagner, get quality minutes before conference play starts. It would be great if we could get the starters a break.

I would hope after several days of having to stew about blowing the ISU game they would come out guns blazing. If they don't win by 20+ I would really question this team's competitive pride.

This should be a game in which Woodbury can take advantage as he won't be outmanned athletically in the post.

Timmers a really good player, and Abrahamson dropped 40 in a game this year, but there's not a lot more.

I would love to see Wagner get somewhere around 15 minutes or so in this game. I think that could really help. Also, I hope that if we have a large lead in the second half that Williams gets some time running the point with the young guys, but not the guys like Okah(no disrespect). Something like Williams, Fleming, Baer, Wagner, and Uhl. Give him some weapons and see what he can really do.

Interesting article in the Gazette (which I can't link, but maybe someone can) in which the Drake coach says he wants to build the team with kids from HS, not just be in a hurry by going Juco, and praises Drake for letting him do that. Of course, there are the two transfers but it doesn't sound like he's going to change and do a Hoiberg. They maybe small but have two 7 footers.

I should also clarify that their bench has some length with McGlynn and former Iowa mr. basketball Casey Schlatter, but they are very thin muscle wise. Those guys will have a few inches on a guy like Wagner, but Wagner's muscle should allow him to bang around.

Wise and McCarter are scorers and Pulliam can defend. The belly button defense may cause us problems.

Schlatter didn't win Mr. Basketball. Wyatt Lohaus did for 2014

Maury John was a great coach at Drake. I have often wondered how he would have done at ISU if he hadn't gotten ill and died. As many may remember, Drake almost knocked off UCLA when Lew Alcindor (better known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar after his name change) played, in the NCAA tournament.

They will have had 9 days off since the last game, and then will have another week off between our last cupcake game and MSU.

Exactly how much of a break do they need? That's 2 games (both against cupcakes) in a 19 day span.

Sorry, I should've worded that better. I meant that I hope the younger guys get quality minutes to develop better depth so they can give the starters a break in conference games.

I'm just glad to learn we won the game. I didn't watch on ESPN3, and the Facebook banner I saw said Drake 70 Iowa 64. It's a relief to find out it was wrong... I was bummed until I got on here and saw we won. Whew!

I think you can put your Iowa easily predictions to rest this season. This team can lose to anyone and will not blow anyone out.
