Levar Woods - Bucs' with a virtual interview conducted today with Iowa's ST coordinator

I don't like this one bit.

Yes, this is a move that would be good for Woods but I really wish that he would have been given the asst. HC position.

I wonder if he had any desire for the OC spot or to be named ast. HC?

The job security for an NFL special teams coach is what, 2 yrs before a new coaching staff is hired? Vs a school like Iowa where it’s a lifetime contract. There’s no comparison.

There’s no growth coaching nfl special teams vs college. What’s a coach going to teach an nfl caliber punter or kicker? They are already the best of the best.

There are only 32 NFL Special Teams Coordinator positions. No one in his situation would turn down an opportunity to coach at the highest level.

It would probably mean he's pigeonholed as a STC for life in the NFL, but those guys get rings too. He could probably parlay it into the HC position at Iowa in a few years. He'd need some years away anyhow, to boost his candidacy.

Going from an NFL STC to NFL head coach would be a moonshot, but not impossible - John Harbaugh did it. If the Rooney rule is still in effect he'd at least get some interviews down the line.

This is interesting. I heard from a friend in Iowa City a couple weeks back, and I don’t know how valid it is, but that both Woods and Bell were particularly irritated with the large raise Seth Wallace got and felt slighted. 🤷‍♂️. I had heard at that time they may be looking at other positions. Again, don’t kill the messenger. Just passing on what I heard.

I think the special teams coaches sort of leave the kickers alone for the most part but mostly work with the players doing the punt and kickoff blocking and tackling. One guy out of their lane on kickoff coverage can really hurt as can a missed tackle. Really great blocking leads to big returns.

Heard this too. I think he was slighted he didn’t get the AHC title.

He’s my next Hawkeye head coach if it was me.

Don’t expect Mason to sign with the Hawks. Also- if he leaves, this might impact Iose’s decision as well.

One of the guys coaching this Sunday made his name coaching special teams in the NFL.

It's definitely a step up.

Where is Woods at in salary versus all other special teams coaches in college football?

Bell on the other hand….I think he is as important as PP. We’ve had a lot of great defensive lineman play under a lot of different coaches, but our defense is what it is because we play 8 to 10 guys on DL with no appreciable drop off, and he is a major architect of that.

Our D-line is nasty. That has always been the key in the SEC, big fast deep lines. Now we aren’t that big and that fast per se….(way faster & athletic than we ever get credit for, yes) but we are very, very good.

Some of it by finding way undervalued talent (that’s our real skill on D, in my opinion ) & some of it, of course, being fundamental teaching!

I thought quite high…..700kish. Can’t be a lot of special teams coaches, making more than that is there? In college?

$625K in 2023 per this list. 6th highest (pretty good pay).

Guessing he would probably make around $1M in the NFL.

This wouldn’t surprise me and I don’t blame them.

He’s been a coach at Iowa longer than Wallace. I’d argue he also is the ST coordinator at a school that really depends on its special teams. Wallace’s position is no more important than Woods or Bell’s positions, imo. So, it’s understandable why Bell and Woods feel slighted. That being said, people who shop themselves around like Wallace has, get offers as well as promotion/raises quicker than their contempt co-workers. It’s a flaw in what should be a merit system but unfortunately is not.

That shouldn’t matter of they’re looking to move up. If it matters it should actually help them.

Oh no, the part that would surprise me is the disgruntled part. Yes, they are hot commodities and should do what’s best for them.

This would be a huge bummer and exactly why I posted that I didn't like him interviewing. He has been loyal to Kirk and the Hawks. Something seems to be a little off in all of this situation.

I'd roll the dice with Woods over Kirk. Not going to lie.

Did I mishear or did Wallace say he was in charge of the punt team yesterday?
Wallace attended Grinnell High School in Grinnell, Iowa, and was a four-year letterman (1997-2000) in football at Coe College. Wallace led the nation in punt returns in 1997 and is Coe’s career leader.

He said this when talking about his history at Iowa "believe it or not I oversaw the punt team for many many years..." so he was talking about the past.

Thanks! I was listening at the gym last night and just remembered that comment this morning. Thanks for clearing up the confusion!

Hmmmmm...Tampa or Iowa City, Iowa City or Tampa?

If offered, that's a move that would be pretty tough to decline. He has to be feeling at his ceiling in IC and he seems like a guy who wants, and deserves, more.
Well, as my handle says, I spent considerable time in Tampa Bay. I wanted to move to FL from Iowa to escape cold winters, but who's to say Levar feels the same? IMO Tampa is a crowded clusterf@ck of a city and I didn't really like it, but I am not a big city kind of guy, either. I moved to Tampa only because that's where I was able to find work for the relocation. When I was able to go 100% remote after the covid outbreak, I got out of there so fast.. Moved to a small sleepy coastal town in FL. Much better.

That said, an NFL opportunity could be hard for Woods to turn down if opportunity comes calling. I'm guessing he goes if offered.

plug and chug, next man in. if woods leaves, should budmayr get his gig?

Well, let's be honest.

It's a move he needs to make.

If he wants to grow as a coach, at this given time, he needs to leave the Hawks.

I can see a return in the future.

Could Budmyre take his place as special teams coach while still coaching wide receivers?

It has been said before that the other coaches also have special teams duties. Woods oversees all of ST, but its not like the other coaches just stand around during ST sessions.
