Liked the Line With Wirfs

I did not watch the line play as I was watching Stanley, very good pocket awareness, his size allows him to break arm tackles that was a problem for CJ, each game he seems to make better and smarter decisions.

now he needs to cut down on the dry spells as he went 4-18 in one stretch.

Why are do you hate Iowa QBs?

I like the counter plays with hat on hat; I think teams have widely figured out how to shoot the gaps on zone plays.
A good mix would be nice from here on out and 100% confidence BF will get what he wants out of the run game. Hopefully sooner than later.
Part of that also has to deal with experience and communication ... when guys have the experience and the communication ... it becomes more second nature to get to those LBs who are flying in ... and that prevents the RB from having to make his first move behind the line of scrimmage. Our problems have less to do with defenses learning to attack our running game ... and more to do with our OL missing blocks.

Although Welsh has been a trooper for us ... he had been missing plenty of blocks from the RT spot. This isn't a surprise ... because he's more comfortable playing at OG for us. There's no dishonor in that ... when healthy, Yanda can pretty much cover any OL spot for the Ravens. However, he's lethal when he's playing at OG ... it's his best "fit."

Iowa's OL will presumably benefit from having the experience and cohesion of our interior OL ... once they again get used to playing together (Render, Daniels, and Welsh). Then, our inexperienced OTs will come along develop-wise as the season progresses.

CJ was not mobile and was sacked 30 times and posters on here constantly blamed the OL for not giving a non-mobile QB time to throw,

now its a complete 180 on why you are still complaining about the OL. make up your minds. lst season thru 13 game CJ threw 17 TD passes and 1929 yards, face you people are not happy unless you make things up to bellyache about.
Actually, in '16 ... there were a trifecta of factors that contributed to those sacks. Beathard's mobility was one of them. Iowa's OL DID have some issues with pass-pro ... particularly through the first half of the season (or so). Lastly, Iowa's receiving options weren't always on the same page as the QB ... consequently, they weren't getting open as often. That also forced Beathard to hold onto the ball too long. In addition to the above ... Wadley was also a liability in pass-pro.

Right now, there are factors that are contributing to some of the problems too ....
  • Stanley still is just a 1st year starter. The game still likely is pretty "fast" for him. Thus, many of his decisions get a little rushed ... and the ball doesn't come out like it should. Furthermore, in his development, the focus is still more on him operating within the O ... so there's still an emphasis on him keeping his eyes downfield and going through his progressions. As the game slows down for Stanley, he'll be able to notice things more quickly ... and that will allow him to make more plays with his legs AND allow him to have a bit more success when "improvising."
  • Pass-pro by TEs has been spotty. Between the TE and Stanley there have been missed recognitions ... and guys have come off the edge unblocked.
  • There have been miscommunications on the OL ... and some blocks that have been intended to get passed-off have been dropped. This has led to more marginally blocked guys getting pressure.
  • Stanley doesn't always make the recognition when a DB is on the outside ... the guy often comes in unchecked from the edge. When Stanley does see the guy ... too often, he checks the play to a run to the opposite side.
  • Pass-pro by Wadley is better than it was last year ... however, it's still a bit spotty.

I'm sure someone has already said it earlier in the thread, but I'm pretty sure we would have liked about any combination of our lineman in the game, since it was against Illinois.

As long as there are no penalties the line is great - Nitewing

I hope that they have now found a combo they can stick with and move forward and the bye week can be used to start to get some cohesiveness. I think the interior is the best with Render Daniels and Welsh. Jackson and Wirfs are going to have their mistakes but as long as they keep learning and growing the line can get better as the season goes along. If they can get the running game going, they can have a pretty good offense.

I think northwestern's front could be very formidable I'm glad they have 2 weeks to get ready any other tonight's on there d

Thought he played pretty well. Got beat a couple times, but its his first full game. Significant upside.

Kicks Welsh to guard, where he is best. I'd be happy with Jackson, Wirfs at tackle, Daniels at center, Welsh at guard. Other guard can stay Render, and if Boone can get his snaps so be it.

Realistically, guys will get nicked, so we will need Boone and Reynolds anyway. But I'm happy with this starting line up.

Posted after the MSU lost that Wirfs was too good to keep of the field. He is very athletic. Jackson is also getting better every game, the future at O-line looks bright with current commits and next years incoming commits.

I think the big thing with TW is he will benefit tremendously from the two weeks to view an entire games worth of live action tape of his play last week. I think will see solid growth from him going forward.

I just rewatch the game and this young man did do a fine job. I know it was Illinois and the road is going to be much tougher but I great start to a college career
