line-up shake up

With our pieces our starting line up could easily vary based on the team we're facing. I like BeattOSU's idea of trying Lucy at the 2; Guyton seems to always look to push the ball up ala CC and Lucy is looser with the ball than I expected.

It has been said "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." The eye test says AOG has hit a wall. Sure, her FG % is great, but she is soft on the boards, weak on defense against good opponents, and often cannot get herself open. Her minutes need to be intelligently limited.
....and a -19 vs Maryland.....That is telling. I'd like to see some hustle, effort, and fight from her. I've seen her 2x get tied up and throw an elbow this year. Some of that fight, if used the right way, could change a game. Instead, she throws up weak shot attempts or kicks the ball out when she's in traffic. It's been frustrating watching her play this year as I think she is capable of being a really good player......

So what you’re saying is you want to replace the 5-9 senior point guard (Who admittedly throws the ball away more than I thought she would) who averages 3.3 TOs per 40 minutes.

With a 5-7 freshman guard who throws the ball away at a 4.8 clip per 40 minutes

The reality is Iowa has used basically 9-10 players on a regular basis. Several, in fact 6-7, of those players have played at an overall level within a tight range. Given this, Coach J is going to be second guessed as to both starting lineup and “crunch time” lineup in any game the team does not meet expectations and most particularly any losing effort.

One thing seems certain: going to disappoint everyone on this board if there isn't much different at all.
It's only been a few practices since Sunday, so might want to keep our expectations in check.

Jensen did say that players were experiencing a learning curve playing different positions, both O&D assignments. One lost player on court can cause everyone mistakes.

I think just some added shoulder chip will help.

This is a tough league that will likely get at least 10 teams, if not more into the tournament. And we haven’t lost to an even average team and quite frankly, we still haven’t played our best basketball.

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Our fans have been ridiculously hard on this team.
Yes- get those freshman ready for Addie Deal and that class

That is a fairly trivial stat, but even so, I'd be willing to risk another turnover or two if it results in more easy baskets. We're painfully aware of how well our 'stare and feed the post' offense has been working.

As long as we're talking statistics, last year someone named Caitlin Clark 'threw the ball away' 5.4 times every 40 minutes.

those stats are misleading. CC played much faster, so more possessions per game, and made a lot of incredible feeds, so the conversion on a completed pass was much higher.

I'd bring Syd back to the first off the bench role. Start Guyton, McCabe, Lucy, Mallegni, and Stuelke. Bench scoring will take a hit but it would definitely space the floor better and allow Lucy room to get mid range shots as well as let Hannah work block to block without the congestion of a second true post. There isn't a "great" ball handler in the group but spacing should negate that issue.

My guess is they move Hannah to the 5, Syd to the 4, and add either Guyton or Stremlow to the lineup. Stremlow brings some of the intensity that was missing, but Guyton adds ball handling and let's Lucy play the 2. Both improve passing to the post.

Great comparison…..we got anyone averaging 8 asts & 30 pts, No….Hmmm, then irelvant

Here’s the deal, I’m finding a certain% of fans are always going to be disappointed. You’d think we lost to 3 scrubs ?!

Lucy to 2 spot makes sense because she is not a good passer. Guyton needs more time to get the chemistry and develop passing skills. Her shooting is awesome.

OK, here’s the deal. I’ve been critical of Lucy’s passing as well, but honestly, the whole team struggles. This girl is a lifelong point guard who is averaging the most assist she’s ever averaged along with the most turnovers.

I’m not sure sliding her to the two based on what our fans think makes a ton of sense

100% this. We’re not moving Lucy to the 2.

The trends in the last two games aren't great, so I get the panic, but still a very good chance to get 20 wins. Normal as a fan, I think, to want an identity you can count on. Jensen answered the identity question with "resilient." I suppose that needs to count for her as well. Lots of games ahead, but the next 6 are going to tell us pretty quickly if that chance is real.

So, resilient bouncing from the mistakes of the last two games? One hour away. No pressure. (?)

So I’ll try to keep this short. You know who I am, how long I’ve been around and how I can be.🙄 I get I can be a pain in the ass, but with some help from my friends @littlez 😂 I’ve tried to keep my bitching about fans to a bare minimum….

With that said how in the hell can you live your life that way. We’ve lost to three top 20 teams. Good top 20 teams, maybe better than top 20 teams. In hotly contested games with a new coaching staff and a whole bunch of new players.

And I saw someone the other day projecting. We’re gonna win seven more games. I’ve seen most of the usual suspects bitching like crazy about a new coach.

I mean, holy hell when do you actually just sit back and enjoy the way the game plays out. I get being frustrated. Lots of us have been frustrated, but we aren’t constantly calling out the coach, hoping to bench players, I mean, it really is crazy.

And I’m not being cliché, I mean, it is a super crazy, over the top, irrational, catastrophizing type of way to watch anything.

Lucy is what she is. She is not going to suddenly develop good passing skills. She is a premiere scorer. That is what the 2 spot always needs.

The consensus seems to be Feuerbach is the first lineup change, then AOG.

Try it and see what happens.

Jan would be wise to pick 5 players and play them 30 plus minutes a game. Stop with the hockey line. Hopefully she picks Lucy, Guyton, Taylor, Stuelke and Heiden. I’m through watching Addison, Kylie and want much less of Sydney. We need to move to getting this team ready for next year as this year is a transitional phase.

Yeah, the upperclassmen have been really disappointing IMO. It is like they did not work on their game in the off-season. I am not sure what goes on at Iowa practices either?

Chill CM. You think some posters are over the top on their reactions to the team make stupid mistakes. Don't you think you are over the top in your response to those posters? Let them vent, the same way you vent.

I hate to say this but unfortunately we're just not that good. I think We're severely lacking confidence as well. I was happy to see Jan give Guyton the start last night but she had a rough night, 16 minutes, 4 turnovers and 2 points. But of course Affolter with 4 points, Feurbach with 4 points and the 2 combined for 3-10 from the line. That's insane. O'Grady with another no show as well again with 3 points in 20 minutes. McCabe hit a few 3's. Not sure where we go from here. Not sure that Affolter is going to suddenly start getting us 12-15 pts. Kylie is a nice defender but can't score and her free throws were extremely costly last night. Hannah and Lucy kept us in the game. Not sure where we go from here.

The way the team is losing is bothersome to me. I can accept loses if they play smart and fight hard. I don't fully understand the amount of turnovers, holding onto the ball for too long, failed lob passes, lazy passes in general, and free throw issues (last game). Those things are elementary stuff. It's amazing that they only have 4 loses with these shortcomings. Makes me think that
  • the divide between decent and poor teams are gargantuan and the divide between great and decent teams are gargantuan and/or
  • this team has the potential to be pretty darn good

Still disappointed and frustrated. Think everything has been said.

All anyone really wants to see are solid fundamentals, progress, and a confident identity for the program.

she can't play against girls her height or taller. She feasted on shorter opponents earlier in the season. That's not the case anymore.
Jan must really like the center coming in next year.

try telling this to a mens team fan. They believe that good pg's don't have any turnovers. Which is simply not true.
