It's one of those days in the office. I was just thinking what our future would look like with Cook in the lineup.

Here's what I have which is very off-the-cuff so please chime in with your suggestions

2016/17

PG: C. Williams, Bohannan
SG: Jok, Flemming, Ellingson
SF: Hutton, Moss, Uhl
PF: Wagner, Jones, Pemsl
C: Cook, Kriener

2016/17

PG: C. McCaffery, Bohannon, Williams
SG: Flemming, Ellingson, Williams
SF: Hutton, Moss, Uhl
PF: Wagner, Uhl, Pemsl,
C: Cook, Kreiner

With a body and skill set like Cook's I think he could really help us down low while creating some major mismatches for teams taking their big men outside as well. Additionally, we seem to have kind of a log jam at PF which makes me think they have more plans for Cook at the 5 than the 4. I'm sure some will question Hutton playing over Moss but I view some of these lineups with matchups in mind. Having all your offensive athletes start with few coming off the bench can be problematic. One way or another It looks like there is plenty of talent coming in so hopefully we can continue to upgrade class after class.

After 2015/16, which is the curtain call for some guys who helped build this Iowa program, the 2016/17 season? Remember the "collapse"? Seems like not long ago, doesn't it.

We will have ONE guy left from that team. And pretty much TWO guys left from last years team that beat Davidson in the NCAA's.

So, with or without Cook, having made careful considerations with my usual temperament towards exacting research and high probability data. My conclusion. 2016/17?

One big stack of Legos.

I don't think Cook is a Center. I think he is a combo forward. I would think Wagner would swing over to forward before Cook would do so. Going forward I anticipate a lineup with 3 guards and two forwards or a forward and a Center. The trend these days is to go small. With the quicker clock you have to get shots up. Don't always have time to pound it inside. Iowa will spread the court more and drive the ball. I think the 30 second clock will make a big difference in how we and other teams play. Fran is already planning for this in his recruiting.

Well fortunately we have someone running the show who has probably long thought about these same scenarios therefore it's nothing with which you need concern yourself.

Everyone can sit back and enjoy.

If Cook commits, it's almost certain he's a starter. As a senior in 2016, Jok will probably start. Beyond that, it depends on who emerges this coming year. Jones, Uhl, a frosh? Guessing at this point would probably be difficult for the coaches, let alone us. But if you've got the time, come up with as many combos as you like for 2016. One of them could actually be correct.

Jok. 6'6" 199 Sr
Uhl 6'9" 220 Jr
Cook 6'8" 240 fr
Moss 6'5" 195 so
Williams 6'6" 199 so

Hutton 6'5" 210 so / Jones 6'7" 220 sr
Pemsl 6'9" 240 fr / Wagner 6'7" 230 so
Kriener 6'10" 245 fr
Fleming 6'5" 200 so / Ellingson 6'4" 190 so
Bohannon 6'1" 180 fr

The 5 spot to me will become a defensive position more then offensive in 2016. I see Uhl defending the post, Cook if he's here at the 4, Jones/Hutton at the 3, Jok plays the two, and Williams/Bohannan at the point.

That leaves Flemming, Moss, Wagner, Ellinson, Pemsel, and Kreiner on the bench depending on match ups. The post area offensively would be determined again based on the match ups. Uhl, Cook, and Jones could all man the spot. 5's would have a hard time defending in a man and a zone would help open up three pointers.

Just one man's idea.

I will be shocked if Uhl isn't starting his senior year. The idea of him defending the post on defense is intriguing to me. He's put on a lot of good weight this year and with another year he will be solid enough. His long arms and quickness make him a pretty good shot blocker and he has a knack for rebounding as well. I'm pretty certain Jok and Cook would also start. Beyond that, it is pretty much guess work. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bunch of different starting combinations.

This is what I'd go with as well.

Fleming will start at some point this season and never see the bench again.

IMHO

I slightly disagree. I vote that it's Dan's job on here to continue concerning himself with these scenarios and posting his thoughts. I enjoy reading them. And I usually hate positivity.

I could see this based on the offense in his highlight vids, but he's going to have to adjust quickly to playing D1 defense in the half-court AND in Fran's presses/half-court traps.

You're killing me. :D How am I supposed to know between Fleming, Moss, Hutton, Ellingson and Jok, and even Jones and Baer, who the starting wings will be? That presumes Williams is a pg, as is Bohannon. Even if Fleming moves over to help at point, I'm still squished with talent.

I say let them play at least half this season and see what shakes out.

Meanwhile. Uhl is dangerously close to a breakout year, this year! And that leaves Cook, but Wagner isn't just going to give up, the kid is a workhorse. Kriener who has a ceiling I think is underestimated, and Pemsl who was pushing 4 star himself before getting hurt...when he comes back strong. Five guys for two spots there!

I think the strength of the team will be that second unit, whoever they are, that can come in and work tired teams further towards total exhaustion. If I had to pick my "likely" top eight, it would be a complete guess. But:

Williams: PG
Fleming: SG/PG
Moss: SG/WF
Hutton: SG/WF
Jok: WF
Uhl: PF
Cook: PF
Pemsl: PF

All getting about 20 to 25 mpg. Leaving just enough for a couple guys to get maybe 10 mpg, or less, and that's between:

Bohannon, Ellingson, Baer, Jones, Wagner, Kriener. (I would not put it past Wagner to play ahead of Pemsl)
