Lineups Settled: ISU v. Iowa: Who Wins?

Short summary for those that don't want to waste their time. It was a good laugh while driving today. KD is such a clown.
Dresser: Referencing one of his guys. It's early in the year so I don't want to send a guy out there that's a little banged up .
Dresser: Referencing Paniro Ya he was hurting going into Grandview wrestled 4 matches and hurt it a little more. Translation: I don't care if we lose to Stanford or Ok State as long as we beat Iowa.
Dresser referencing Iowa: A few guys just happened to show up over there thanks to Bob. No mention of Carrol, the wife choker, or the 84 they brought in last year. Or the numerous other guys such as AJ they tried to bring in the last 2 years.

Dresser: I prefer bringing guys in and developing them. That's a better story.
Dresser: Every March we quit coaching and go kiss ass trying to get money to buy transfers. Attention rich fans, I will let you sit beside me during meets and ride on our plane. You can own me and the team if you give enough money.
Dresser: I prefer recruiting and developing guys.
Yep pretty much lays the truth out there

I do agree it seems so transactional, which I don’t particularly like, but those are the rules. And if Dresser had the opportunity to pick up Teemer, Parco, and Buchanan this past offseason, you know he would have done it too. He wouldn’t have been doing his job if he didn’t.

Also, when you hear Teemer talk about his experience at Iowa so far, I get the feeling he’s not just pleased with the bag he received. So we know it’s not just about the money.
he literally took in Christian Carrol and Aiden Riggins this off season

and Cody Chittum and Echmendia before that

edit: ahh that's right Bockman and Fledkamp last year

Terukina dec 0-3 ISU
Frost dec 0-6 ISU
Redding dec 0-9 ISU
Parco dec 3-9 ISU
Teemer dec 6-9 ISU
Caliendo maj 10-9 Iowa
Brands dec 13-9 Iowa
Arnold dec 16-9 Iowa
Buchanan Maj 20-9 Iowa
Bastida dec 20-12 Iowa

Wish Swiderski were still wrestling - but this is still a great dual.

ISU could win 125 - 149 and 285.

But it’s in Carver, so Parco losing would be surprising.

Sweet Cheeks (Lips) Dressler did get one thing right; Iowa nor myself broke any rules, ever.

He did though. Personally called numerous athletes who were not in portal. How do I know? They told me.

Aside from those mentioned above, he tried lifting two more of our starters this year. Another Bozo No No.

Sweet Cheeks (Lips) needs to be better on and off the mat.

Go Hawks

My guess that has no inside sources whatsoever is that it was Caliendo and Arnold. Could also see it being Ayala if they thought he could get to 125.

2024 Iowa State vs Iowa Wrestling Preview

Iowa State takes on Iowa in the annual CyHawk wrestling dual for the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy. Gable won two NCAA titles for Iowa State (100-1 college record) before leading Iowa to 15 NCAA Championships during 21 seasons as head coach (1977-97).
The Cyclones placed fourth at the 2024 NCAA Championships, and Iowa finished fifth, but it’s been a long time since Iowa State won a dual. Then coach Bobby Douglas led his team past the Jim Zalesky-led Hawkeyes for a 19-16 win on December 5, 2004.
It’s been all Iowa since, with the Hawkeyes owning a commanding 69-16-2 historical lead.
Iowa is off to a fast start, posting a 3-0 record without giving up double-digit points in any dual. Iowa State hasn’t used its best lineup, and it is 1-1. It fell to Stanford 23-21 on November 8, a team Iowa defeated the following day, 32-9.

Kevin Dresser And Tom Brands On The Iowa State-Iowa Rivalry

“The Iowa-Iowa State dual is bigger than our coaching staff or their coaching staff,” Dresser said. “It’s been around forever. I remember watching it as a kid. Last year we had 265,000 people watch it on ESPN and another 15,000 (at Hilton Coliseum). That just tells you that this dual meet is something special.”
“It’s the next one on the calendar and I’m not downplaying it,” Brands said. “This is a big one but it’s the next one on the calendar and you have to get ready to go. It doesn’t matter who it is in competition.”

Off-Season Acquisitions Bolster Line-ups

Three of Iowa’s best wrestlers were on different teams last season. Kyle Parco (149) and Jacori Teemer (157) wrestled for Arizona State, and Stephen Buchanan (197) was at Oklahoma after transferring from Wyoming. The trio is fueling Iowa’s early-season success with a perfect combined record.
Iowa State picked up Christian Carroll (197) from Oklahoma State and Aiden Riggins (174) from Iowa. Neither have wrestled the NCAA Championships — yet.

What Team Will Win?

Iowa State enters as the underdog, but that doesn’t mean the Cyclones can’t win if everything goes right. Dresser's first dual win over his former team will take a nearly flawless performance.
Predicting an outcome is difficult since we don’t know who each team will use, but here is a breakdown of each weight based on possibilities.
125: Iowa State’s Kysen Terukina is a three-time national qualifier who hasn’t competed this season. He’s the favorite since he’s the only wrestler at this weight with college postseason experience. Dresser has two quality options if Terukina is unavailable.
The Cyclones need this match, or they can't win the dual. With a win, Iowa can slam the door shut.
133: Iowa’s Drake Ayala, a returning national finalist at 125, enters as the slight underdog against returning 133-pound All-American Evan Frost. Both have a high octane style, so this could be the highlight of the dual. Iowa State has a shot if it can win the first two weights.
141: Neither team has a top-20 wrestler, so this match is completely up for grabs. Iowa State can win the first three and are favored to do so. Iowa needs at least one win in the first three weights so the bulk of the line-up can do its work. The dual is over if Iowa wins the first three.
149: Kyle Parco has the edge in rank and credentials, but a #4 vs #6 matchup can go either way. If Anthony Echemendia wins — and if Iowa State wins the first four — fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be sweating. Iowa still has enough firepower to overcome a 12-0 deficit.
157: Iowa’s top-ranked Jacori Teemer is the odds-on favorite in this top-10 matchup. Paniro Johnson wrestled in the Grand View Open for mat time, but he’s still getting into folkstyle shape. Wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye Arena isn’t a place to find your sea legs.
165: Iowa’s second-ranked Michael Caliendo is the favorite and is expected to win. If Iowa State uses MJ Gaitan, it should be fresh in everyone’s mind that he nearly came back against Patrick Kennedy during last year’s dual. Gaitan is a gamer, but this is a different environment and opponent.
174: There is an added layer of interest here. Aiden Riggins transferred from Iowa and is a Cyclone. He’ll face former teammates Nelson Brands or Patrick Kennedy. Iowa is favored regardless of who gets the nod.
184: Gabe Arnold was the hero last year. He’s looked good this season and the Hawkeyes expect him to pull through against Evan Bockman.
197: Iowa State’s Christian Carroll continues to improve but Iowa’s Stephen Buchanan has been nails this season. Iowa should win this one handily with possible bonus points.
285: All-American Yonger Bastida might get used if the dual comes down to heavyweight. He will face hometown favorite Ben Kueter — an undefeated four-time state champion and U20 World champion — if he does.
Iowa has more ways to win and more tools at its disposal. Iowa State can win, but it takes winning all the swing matches and keeping bonus points to a minimum — a tall task inside a rowdy Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Tom Brands’s Perfect Dual Record Against Iowa State (18-0)

Tom Brands has a spotless record against his in-state rivalry since taking over as head coaching during the 2006-07 season. He’s had a few close calls, including last year’s 18-14 win in Ames.
December 3, 2006: Iowa 24, Iowa State 6
December 9, 2007: Iowa 20, Iowa State 13
December 6, 2008: Iowa 20, Iowa State 15
December 6, 2009: Iowa 18, Iowa State 16
January 10, 2010: Iowa 19, Iowa State 12
December 3, 2010: Iowa 22, Iowa State 13
December 4, 2011: Iowa 27, Iowa State 9
December 1, 2012: Iowa 32, Iowa State 3
December 1, 2013: Iowa 23, Iowa State 9
November 29, 2014: Iowa 28, Iowa State 8
November 29, 2015: Iowa 33, Iowa State 6
December 10, 2016: Iowa 26, Iowa State 9
February 18, 2018: Iowa 35, Iowa State 6
December 1, 2018: Iowa 19, Iowa State 18
November 24, 2019: Iowa 29, Iowa State 6
December 5, 2021: Iowa 23, Iowa State 11

Herrera over Ben I don’t think I have laughed so hard at a prediction. And you have seen Kale wrestle how much at this weight? I think he can handle the jailbird just fine.

Block vs Redding should be a good one as will the other light weights. Toss ups through 49 but if Hawks take 3 or 4 of them, its over. Block looked much more active last week, granted it was Bellarmine, but someone alluded to he is getting control of the weight now. I think he can hit a blast double leg or two against Redding, he has to finish it fast, Redding is wiry and can tie wrap him up like an octopus if Block is hesitant. Redding has a good duck under to single leg from what Ive seen but Block can fight those off. I am going to pick Block with a takedown in the third and ride out for the win.

Redding vs Block is intriguing to me as well.
Redding can be hot or cold. Can wrestle great or if he gets reckless can get stuck. I imagine the calculus from Dresser is the bigger Frost being in Carver for his first varsity match was a hill too steep? I think Redding will really struggle with Block's length.

I’m hoping we see the Block that everyone’s expected. You know it’s there just gotta get the weight under control and then see what’s there.

He was much more active last week and if Im remembering right showed some attacks other than the double leg blast. I think he did a slide by and a single leg also last week. Already a tough out but with increased arsenal should be holding his own against the best. For me, he is going to be fun to watch his progress throughout the year.

The more Block wrestlers the better he will get. Not sure what to expect against Redding but I wouldn’t be shocked either way. I said it before and will say it again we could be down 0-3 or even 0-4. But we could be up 4-0 as well. First 4 weights are very intriguing and could go either way. 157-197 Hawks will win and I look for some bonus points in some of those matches. If they throw Batista out there Ben probably loses but if it’s the backup Ben cruises to a Win.

There are ALWAYS surprises when these bitter rivals grapple.
125- Iowa by decision. The difference will be Peterson's ability to ride. 3-0
133- Iowa by decision. Redemption time for Ayala and Frost cutting lots of weight. Not much recovery time. 6-0
141- Iowa by major decision. Don't think Redding will respond to the sell out crowd. 10-0
149- Iowa by decision. Certainly could go the other way, but like Parco's improvement on top. 13-0
157- Iowa by major decision. Teemer at another level. 17-0
165- Iowa by major decision. Caliendo is a monster. Regardless of ISU sends out, the Hawkeye will flex. 21-0
174- Iowa by major decision. Brands with a likely dominant effort. 25-0
184- Iowa State with an upset. Hope I'm wrong, but the Clones need to at least win one match. 25-3
197- Iowa by decision. ISU's Carroll providing plenty of bulletin board material and NO GAS tank. 28-3
HWT- Iowa State with a decision if Bastida wrestles, otherwise Kueter will major Herrera. 28-6 or 32-3

Iowa could definitely SKUNK Iowa State. If the Hawkeyes start fast, which I believe they will, it's going to be a long trip back to AMES.

Checking in! how did it go?

it's amazing, you don't think you could love anyone the way you do when that baby comes out. I remember almost punching the doctor because I thought he slapped my daughter too hard. I was PISSED.
Congrats on the new addition! Exhausting but beautiful times ahead for you. I went alone to a home dual the day after we brought our first baby home from the hospital. I was pretty nervous that would come back to bite me, but no-pics has never brought it up once.

A lot of women want to feel desired. Couldn’t you at least ASK her for permission to post a pic?
