I don't want him back. He doesn't deserve it and even if you thought he did... he wont ever start. So what's the point in putting your neck out for a room guy. Not saying starter or not should be a factor but just saying.

Why is he a room guy? I'm a guy buying in on the Turk hype, but did Iowa get a transfer of some unbeatable guy to wrestle 141 that I missed?
If Ryan is allowed back on the team I am sure he could be in contention for the spot.
If he earns his way back onto the team I will be happy for him. Hopefully he keeps his nose clean and this story has a good ending
I like the move. He stays, works his ass off plus some extra for being involved in the incident, and we see what happens. It sounds like Logan is owning this. He isn't running away to compete elsewhere, like many other wrestlers have done.

Look I don't want any of those 3 guys back. Sure Ryan's charges may be the lesser of that group and not severe on paper but its the principal. They all borke into many cars and properties where people sleep. That's awful thinking and really bad intentions. Its not like its a public intox or some dumb mistake. There is clear bad intent with what they did. They went into houses/garages when the folks were home sleeping. Thats another animal than just shoplifting. See you guys later. Besides that being a bad teammate to not try and stop you other teamates. who cares if he is charged with less. he let his teammates and the program down.
Move on. I have no issue if Brands wants to help him, make a few calls, let him practice in the room until then and get him on track again, but he should NEVER be on this roster again!. Regardless of if he could start or not.

I guess if he gets his shit together and the school and team decide to let him back in the fold so be it. He would be a walk on and if he sneezed wrong he would be back out the door. He has a lot less baggage than a number of other guys who have been given second and third chances.

The University has rules--the days of a Coach like Brands having "clout" are long gone. If Logan Ryan meets the University standards, and is allowed to be an athlete on the wresting team, and Brands wants him- Im ALL for it.
In addition, Brands and Barta have way more info on this situation to make a decision then those of us on a message board.

I'm not going to argue the legal/moral side. I am no judge. But to completely write off a former top 100 recruit and Fargo AA seems odd.
He did beat Gross this past season (it still counts), beat Colton McCrystal, Le'Roy Barnes. Had some close losses with Mays and John Meeks. Just seems odd to say he has no shot when Carton's best win last year was... ?

I listed evidence that Ryan showed flashes of being a solid wrestler. What D1 results do YOU have that Turk and Carton are so out of his league?

I don't see anyone saying that he would even start, who the heck knows. He has beaten Gross, He beat Carton in HS when he was a Soph and Carton a Senior. In the end the best guys will win the jobs. Stealing is crap, shoplifting or otherwise. They got drunk and made dumb mistakes as you said. It was 1 night and I would bet when the night started they did not have that on their to do list. I won't lose any sleep either way on this one, whatever the school and staff want to do. He wrestled Div 1 starters many different days in practice-- If the Iowa administration deems him eligible to be an athlete at Iowa and Coach Brands feels he is a productive member of the team--even if he isnt ever a starter its OK with me. Like I said--they know WAY more about this situation then us or the public will ever know.

So right now, this is about Ryan continuing his education at the University of Iowa. We feel he has intentions of working his way back onto the team. Perhaps he has had that conversation with Brands, Barta, et. al. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves with whether he will be better at 141 than Carton, Turk or anyone else.
This staff needed to be chewed out. Up until Kem commiting the recruiting was horse manure. At that time Maranelli who I heard was a lock for us commited to Ohio st. Plus we seem to be fighting for 3rd everyseason anymore I don't see that changing this season. Should have won a team title last season but for the 2nd straight year they didn't seem ready.
Hey I don't want this staff replaced quite yet but they deserve critisicm. What are your expectations. Letting criminals back on the team to fight for 3rd place in the team race.
Thank goodness this staff woke up, checked there ego and started hitting the recruiting trail before this got any worse. If we can just finish off this class and the next recruiting wise, we may be able to get back to winning a team title next season. But as it is now. PSU and tOSU are flying by us. Wake up

I'm sure Gross could have done the same thing, he chose to go to another school where getting back on the mat would be much easier. I won't condemn Gross but I will give Ryan a bit of credit for sticking it out.
Many people are in agreement about improvements they would like to see in certain areas, me included. There is nothing wrong with expressing concern but you went beyond that with some stuff and that will not help the program at all. Hopefully things can move forward and we can get back on top. I think it starts with recruiting kids that not only buy in but are athletic as well. I think some of the new guys fit that description.

andegre has him ranked at #35 on wrestlestats; Carton is #46. There are 11 B1G wrestlers currently ranked higher than him. Not worth arguing semantics with ihawkd given his current mood, but whether you call him a room guy, a potential starter, or simply ineligible, he doesn't fill the hole at 141 that I hope will be filled by Grothus this year and Turk after that.

I respect your opinion, but I believe in 2nd chances, no matter what team it is. You certainly have to earn your way back, but alot of us have done dumb stuff, real dumb stuff. Coaches do dumb stuff, athletes do dumb stuff, we all do dumb stuff. It doesn't make you a horrible person.
If he shows up to practice meeting all the legal criteria. Then wins his spot outright in a wrestle off. Then I say let him wrestle.

Hey I didn't jump to any conclusions. Quite frankly I was the one on this board saying take it easy on Ed Ruth until we here abut this. I have long said there a dirty cops and some things are tacked on for plea bargain purposes when some of these kids get arrested.
What I don't like is 1 of these 3 kids coming back, like the other 2 were the problem. All 3 were doing worse crimes than being drunk at a taco bell. While I don't know all the facts, I know for a fact that in my view of the world, kids breaking into multiple cars and houses is worse than say just stealing something at a thrift store. There is a level above just being dumb to me. Im all for 2nd chances as well but this one just hasn't set right with me due to the nature of the crimes. Montell Marion being a dummy and walking home from a bar drunk and punching off a car windy is a dumb. Going into peoples homes while they sleep is a notch above and a bit more of a character flaw. THis was a planned out spree, not just a 1 minute horrible action. Sorry but this crime just doesn't sit well. im actually surprised nobody has said the same. But then again why when they see how I am treated.
