Marinelli good to go this weekend

Why? The kid wanted to be a hawk and no spot is guaranteed for anyone. He is only a freshman, plenty of time to make the starting lineup. I think he will eventually.
Options:
1. Bulk up to 174 and beat Gunther or wrestle one year as a starter (as a senior)...unless Nelson Brands is there and beats him.
2. Stay at 165 and beat Marinelli or wrestle behind him his entire career.
3. Cut down to 157 and beat Kem or wrestle one year as a starter (as a senior).
4. Transfer

P.S. I like Young and am not advocating that he transfer.

If this remotely true...he's a transfer in waiting, imo.

I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that Marinelli goes 174 his SR year, leaving 165 open for Youngs SR year, but i suppose either way you slice it, it's still a '1 year starting' scenario.

I agree, options 1 and 4 seem the most likely. I just don't agree with the statement that he would wonder why he was even here. He wanted to be a hawkeye so he's giving it a shot. It may not work out for him but as a fan I'm glad he's here and trying.

That does look like the unfortunate bottom line. This sucks because I also like Young; I thought he would win the wrestle off.

I do think he has big upside. But since Brands has said 165 belongs to the Bull that tells us what we need to know about that possibility.

It certainly looks like his best shot is to get big and battle Gunther. I chuckle, however, when I start scribbling down future projected lineups and at 174 I have "Young/Gun"!

4. Seems like a hardship situation where the B1G would make a waiver for an in-state school.

Oh, c’mon. I’m kidding...

Totally agree- would LOVE to see him stay and have it work out but don't fault him one iota if he were to consider options.

Anything’s possible. We could even go further if we want to really be creative:
125. Lee
133. Murin
141. Lugo
149. Kem Dog
157. Young
165. Alex
174. Gunther
184. Cash
197. Warner
285. Stoll

First projection here, even if it is a dream one, so be gentle....lol

Pretty sure that lineup would stack up with or better than others’ next year.
How about Bowman at 174?!?

Speaking of Young...
With him getting down to 165 I assumed the Bull would be out longer. What does Young do going forward? Battle for 174 or 165 or are those spots a done deal for the season barring injury?

Just doesn't make sense to me if (if he is still in the mix for 174) for an undersized 174 battling for the spot to cut down to 165 for spot duty when Moody could have served the same purpose.
Agree. PD2 may have shed some light on that in a post. The plan is there is no plan. Be a man and wrestle wherever. That fits what we’ve seen over last several years.

I think it would benefit a 165/174 guy to take several months and add lots of muscle if he’s not going to wrestle 165 spot and has a chance to win 174 spot. Some of those 174 lb guys are huge. It’s strategy/possibly overthinking vs just scrapping/ not thinking too much. Just a different philosophy. I know PD3 isn’t on the team yet, but according to PD2 there was zero discussion to this point about which weight PD3 was going to go at. I figured if PD3 is good enough to win either spot, coaches would just be preparing other guys so they can have their chances at whatever weight PD3 doesn’t go at. For instance, if PD3 goes 197, Wilcke ought to start dropping now. According to PD2, that is not the case.

PD2 explained how Brands don’t tell anybody where to wrestle, they just let it all settle out on its own. Mano-a-Mano. Just a different philosophy. Don’t tame the bull by telling him what to do. Would definitely work well for the guy who wins the spot, or if you have 10 weights full of studs. Hurts the guy who doesn’t win the spot and could have added muscle to compete at higher weight, or could have cut to lower weight if given more notice. Just different philosophies, that’s all.

Maybe Young believed he would be able to beat out Marinelli and so instead of going at a weight that was "open" he took the challenge and tried to beat out Marinelli. Just a wild arse guess there.
Did he get to try out at 165 yet? Marinelli’s been hurt for awhile. I’m sure there must’ve been weigh in wrestle offs at some point earlier, otherwise how would spot be Marinelli’s?

Nope. Young has been going to Iowa since he was in 8th grade. There have been others I am sure who wanted to be Hawkeyes as much as this kid, but I would bet none more so.
Things in Iowa City will work out for this kid and he will be a fan favorite before he is done.

Takes a rival fan to come in here and talk some sense into these peckerwoods. The Youngs don’t seem the type to bolt because of a little adversity. Keg of beer at the HR get together? Nah...I’m thinking a big old vat of cranberry juice.

Young is a RSF. He has already started a few meets at varsity for the team. He has not yet successfully put on the weight to wrestle 174 but still has a few years to do that. Some people cannot magically put on 10 lbs of muscle in a day or season (unless you are the magic man) or grow a great mullet in a day. He is significantly undersized but still almost won the 174 spot (and potentially still could by year end). When he gets a little bigger, his chances for winning the 174 spot will go up. The talk of him not starting (or only starting for a year) or transferring seems premature and misguided, IMO

Aren't you simply saying option one sounds best?

Wow that would be power packed. I doubt it would be healthy for Lugo and Kemdog but they would hurt people, if they were.

Also, remember that Kaleb was a key player in opening up the PA pipeline. He was the first Young Gun to commit to Iowa. Then Kem, Lee, and Murin, and who knows how many more Young Guns studs down the road. This fact, alone, makes Kaleb a critical contributor to the Iowa program.

In addition, remember that careers have all kinds of paths, and all of them are important to the team. The value of a career can be measured in many ways.

Some guys never make the lineup but are invaluable work-out partners for guys who win national titles and/or make the podium multiple times.

Others become 4x AA’s and multiple champs.

Others work hard for several years and just crack the lineup as a senior, but that senior year can be all the sweeter because it was hard-earned. And those guys can still have great success in that last year (see Jesse Whitmer).

There’s a lot to be said for never giving up and giving it your best, no matter the outcome. There’s a lot to be said for not taking the path of least resistance. There’s a lot to be said for being part of the most storied program in modern collegiate wrestling history. And there’s a lot to be said for the brotherhood that exists among coaches and teammates.

There are lots of very good reasons for Kaleb and other Hawks to stick it out and remain committed to finishing what they started. There’s a lot more to life than taking easy way out in the name of being a starter, being an AA, etc.

Kaleb is already a great Hawkeye. He sure has my respect, we all know he has the coaches’ respect, and he certainly has his teammates’ respect. I think his career will be considered a success regardless of how much time he spends in the lineup.

A lot of 'connected' wrestling fans not liking Marinelli taking 'the bull' nickname. He may be EYE TALIAN' but he's not 'made', not yet, anyway.
