*****Mark Gronowski COMMITS to IOWA but Needs Labrum Surgery. Won't begin on-field team workouts until June*****

Considering Kirk values practice, and this kid won’t have any reps until two months before season starts….wouldnt be surprised if this kid doesn’t see the field haha

You don’t beat out a starter in Kirks system.

I still question why we even pursued this kid, even without the injury. I’d prefer to get OL and WR to build towards 2026+

We spend whatever NIL on a player to maybe get us to another 7-8 wins with the schedule we have in 2025….and now the kid may not even be healthy enough to be ready to start opening game

it would be sad, ironic or whatever word you wanna use if Sully is named QB1 for the first game

It's ridiculous we've gone the route of portaling a QB that will miss several valuable months due to injury. This will of course lead us to the inevitable "He didn't have spring ball" excuse if the passing game is off.

That being said...obviously love what he did with SDSU and fingers crossed he doesn't turn into Can't Scramble Anymore Russell Wilson after he signed the gigantic contract with Denver.

Good God, help Iowa football's offense.

I don't like the timeline but in Lester I trust. ;)

It's his QB room now; he's gotta make it work.

What worries me is a road game in Ames in week 2.
You do realize Lester will not be the one playing QB right? In Lester We trust is a horrible take when it comes to something He has absolute zero control over like a Player injury and recovery and then You say what worries Me is week 2 in the same take totally contradicting the In Lester We trust comment. Pick a lane Bro . I like most reasonable fans want to see the 130th ranked passing offense get into the 60s this Year and not look like a bunch of goofs who just swallowed a bottle of adderall and percacets like the last series against Mizzou.

Don't capitalize words in mid sentence, "bro!"

Did I say Lester would be playing QB? Of course not.

Lester has zero control over the QB room? I disagree. That 6 person QB room has his fingerprints all over it.

What a horrible takes on your part! ;)

Summer program starts in 5 months in early June.
That gives him 3 months to get the rust off.
Not ideal but certainly not time to question his effectiveness 9 months from now.
This does give sully and brown a chance to battle for #2 slot in spring.
We are sitting much better in QB room this season
How do you get rust off without practicing with the team using designated play calls against live defenses while learning a brand new system? Tossing the ball around is not getting it done. We will be lamenting ‘rust’ and ‘execution’ references after early seasons losses because of no spring ball participation imo.

One thing’s for sure the big donors will be wanting some ROI on this investment after the 3 biggest acquisitions (Cade, Kaleb Brown and Proctor) all were colossal busts.

I agree; the statement that was released on a late Friday that he needs surgery AFTER he is signed is crazy. And expensive.

Do you think Jimmy Sullivan will finally be a high school QB that will be good & stick around?

Disagree. I think our inherent patience / love of Kirk outweighs any expectation. Yes, that'd be SO Iowa.

Wouldn't be shocked if there were no consequences or even the slightest bit of an 'uproar' if Gronowski turns out to be unhealthy come season.

Iowa donors = "Oh well, we're trying. Get the next one."

Not sure if Sully would ever be told that.

For discussion purposes:

* don't you think that the coaches have told all 6 QBs that it's an open competition?

* at the same time, don't you think that the coaches quietly have Mark set to start game 1?
I think Sully will find out before spring practice if he is competing for the starting position. What are they going to tell him, we do not know? Did they tell MG he will be the starter next year. I have not heard either way.

i hope that one of the other qbs brown probably who takes spring reps beats out G to begin the season. G along with sullivan could wait in the wings as credible experienced qbs. i randomly put brown as season starter, it might well be sullivan.

None of us know what his injury is. People have claimed is probably about 8 different things.

We are a spinal cord injury away from guessing every single possible injury a human could have.

But, ya know, this message board.

Here is a bit of a hint. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t be something else but probably more likely than some of the injuries being tossed around.

Rogers revealed postgame that the reason for taking the knee was quarterback Mark Gronowski had been dealing with an arm injury and he didn’t want to risk him on a play that was unlikely to make the difference.

“Mark (Gronowski)’s been dealing with a lot with his arm,” Rogers said in the postgame press conference. “Playing this game, you wouldn't notice it. I didn't want to show it that he was hurt.”

I just hope June doesn't slip into August. Or we may be watching the highest paid clipboard holder next fall. Gulp.

I'd rather that than Kirk feeling like the level of investment dictates the decision on who to play.
1. Hopefully he learned his lesson on this. 2. And if not, if Lester is really running all of the offense, including who the QB is, then it shouldn't matter. A lot of hope here, but first and foremost, it's my hope that he's fully ready to go in June and this is idle speculation, which tends to fill the football message board for the next 8 months.

The latest rumor is that he's having labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder.

Labrum surgery, also known as arthroscopic labral repair, is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that involves making multiple small incisions around the shoulder.

At the 1:14:21 mark of this podcast (link follows), Tom Kakert discusses Mark Gronowski needing shoulder surgery.

Two minutes in Kakert states "I believe it is labrum."

They discuss how it impacts Iowa moving forward & whether it makes retaining Brendan Sullivan more likely.

Good medical recap, thanks for posting Franny. Given his age and in amazing hands at UIHC, we should all feel pretty confident that MG will be good to go for summer workouts -- Sully is a great insurance policy if we need him and heck, look at the strides that kid made w/out spring ball.

Crazy that Miami wanted him but then backed off due to shoulder surgery but then they grab Beck for $3 mil a year needing elbow surgery? Nuts...

explains why the signing took so long; it looks like Iowa's doctors and the Iowa donors took a really good look at the situation

It's not that crazy. Beck already had the successful surgery in December and is expected to be throwing in the spring. They probably see him as a less risky proposition with a higher upside given his performance to date in the SEC.

I had a labrum repair in late November. Was throwing a baseball in april-ish. Of course I was 42 and didn't have access to the trainers he will have.
