*****Mark Gronowski COMMITS to IOWA but Needs Surgery. Won't begin on-field team workouts until June*****

I gotta say Gronowski must have a ton of confidence in himself or he was given some false promises to come to Iowa knowing he would miss the spring. It shocks me he would come into a position where the current QB has maybe 10 BCS starts and has a lot of promise as a starter and will have been in the system two years. I would think he would really need to turn some heads in the fall to beat out Sully. 🤷‍♂️

Mark also did background checks on Tim Lester. Last year, when Lester was at Green Bay, the rookie TE at Green Bay was a SDSU alum. Mark talked to that guy and got glowing reviews on Tim. That was a big reason Mark was comfortable signing with Iowa.

hope you are right.

i am guessing this is why it took so long for the official announcement that he was committed (how much money was probably an issue based on an upcoming surgery)

As long as Lester is comfortable with the 6 person QB room, I am. He's gotta make it work; hopefully he does.
Forsure. Honestly there are so many different sports injuries that surgery will fix and in a relatively short time with low risk of complications… also, if he played all season with this injury, and still performed well, imagine what he would have done if this injury was fixed… hopefully that’s the player iowa gets.

yeah, keeping fingers crossed that the surgery will help him execute even better than this past season

i just hope he gets the reps in sooner rather than later, wins the job, and is ready to go for the season opener. And then the next week is at Iowa State.

It could be to get rid of scar tissue, an injured tendon, or a slight hernia, but they said he was playing with it and it was not a serious injury
Well it’s January 10th, and he’s out until June. And our first game is August 30th. If you guys feel good about that timeline have at it. With our recent history I do not. Time will tell.

I don't like the timeline but in Lester I trust. ;)

It's his QB room now; he's gotta make it work.

What worries me is a road game in Ames in week 2.

Iowa Quarterback Mark Gronowski will have surgery in the coming weeks and will not begin on-field team workouts until June.

“Mark played last season with a common football-related injury,” Ferentz said. “While he could have continued to play through the injury, Mark is choosing to have a procedure to address the issue, and we support him in his decision. Our sports medicine team thoroughly reviewed his records and has confidence he will be fully rehabbed in time to participate in our summer program. Mark will participate in all non-practice team activities while he recovers.”
Isn't that what Captain Kirk said about Cade also?

Here was the 4:45 pm CT news dump on a Friday that Kakert (and other beat writers, I assume) received. Mark's surgery news is at the end.

I’m guessing it’s something with a low complication rate for surgery. And something that they don’t think will affect his ability. I’m not gonna guess what it is but it still sucks. I do think the injury would have messed with his ability to show his skills in pre draft events so coming back was a good option for him and it was prolly beneficial to us. He prolly would have went in the draft if he wasn’t injured, who knows tho
Maybe a sports hernia. CJ had to deal with one in 2015.

Considering Kirk values practice, and this kid won’t have any reps until two months before season starts….wouldnt be surprised if this kid doesn’t see the field haha

You don’t beat out a starter in Kirks system.

I still question why we even pursued this kid, even without the injury. I’d prefer to get OL and WR to build towards 2026+

We spend whatever NIL on a player to maybe get us to another 7-8 wins with the schedule we have in 2025….and now the kid may not even be healthy enough to be ready to start opening game

Not optimistic about this kid. Hopefully we didn’t pay him a bunch of money up front. Another program-saving QB arrives but needs surgery and is sidelined until just before the beginning of the season? Sounds like the old rinse-repeat cycle of Ferentz ball…
Yeah, I feel like I was scammed

All the hype to land him and then the rug gets pulled out that he won’t be able to practice for 6 months.

Right now, I expect Sully to be under center in August while Mark recovers slowly. Guessing he’ll be QB2 and will get his chance after Sully gets his first concussion.

Ridiculous we arent informed of the ‘common injury’. MG himself can grant permission to reveal or discuss it himself. The medical personnel who examined him could explain with a MG release too. This secrecy WILL destroy participation in the crazy 💰 chase by casual fans. Maybe a good thing. Missing spring ball is an unspoken disaster - again. Throwing the ball around in July is no substitute!

He's getting a payday and it's likely his draft prospects weren't great given what we now know. He couldn't have taken a less risky path.

The only people that might have been scammed were the folks that responded to the Swarm outreach right after the Gronowski announcement.

I think that the first sentence is exactly right. I think that he would have gone into the NFL draft but for the fact that he needed surgery. But if you aren't a first round NFL talent, you need to be able to go right away in the rookie mini-camp and summer drills. So he needed to delay going into the draft for a year. But there still is some risk--are Iowa's WRs good enough that he can look good this fall without having a spring to familiarize himself with them and get reps running this offense?

This pay to play system really sucks, to say the least..

The Swarm has taken some heat on this due to transparency but IMO this potentially looks really bad for Kirk and Lester. We have the makings of an identical situation we had with Cade last season starting the season with Gronowski playing his way into game shape.

We will still have a competitive spring practice with Brendan Sullivan potentially emerging as the frontrunner. Does the staff make Gronowski QB1 just starting to workout again and work with the receivers? I wrote here at one point that Kirk and Lester seemed to have learned from what they went through with Cade. That looks really questionable now.

I think we all know what it took for him to end up signing with us… 💯 capitulation to his demands.
