Matt Campbell to interview for Chicago Bears HC

What has he really accomplished? he got an asterisk season with COVID and he slopped out some close wins with a very easy schedule this year. He's been Good for the clowns but hasn't done anything impressive enough to warrant consideration for any premier job
Other than being their best coach over the last 100 years? Other than that, no, he hasn’t done much.

Johnny Majors had a losing record at Iowa State during their golden era of the seventies.

Earl Bruce went 36-32, and that got him the Ohio State job.

Gene Chizik 5-19, and got the Auburn job.

Again, other than being their best coach since Coolidge was in office, he hasn’t done shit.

And Savior Dan was WELL under .500 overall. And he's really the godfather of modern ISU FB.

Though he has Pollard and McCarney to thank for laying a foundation where this run is even possible (not to mention the biggest teams leaving their conference).

You’re not wrong.

McCarney was an underrated coach for them.

8-3 Earl (3 years) was in the running for the Big 8 championship late in the seasons. Given they were competing against 2 national powers and resurgent CO and OSU it was quite a feat which got him the OSU job...like him or not. Mizzou was a tough out then as well.

Plus, he's very young

I used to slam Jamie Pollard back in the day. Thought he was a huge dork for pulling things like the i380 billboard, freeway sign AKA the scoreboard at JTS, Gene Chizik coins, etc. But over time I’ve grown to respect the guy for all he’s done for Iowa State athletics. Things can and do change overnight in sports, but right now he has Iowa State football and basketball performing at levels they’ve never achieved.

Yeah…he’s still a huge dork.

Pretty interesting. Indicates that Campbell will leave for the right spot.

I also think he learned something after the last time he was the "it" boy. His name was super hot for a bunch of vacancies about 3 years ago. He turned them all down. A couple disappointing seasons and the interest faded.

His interest is at another high right now, so he must be willing to take a strike before the iron cools again.
But did he turn them down or is this just lies from the clowns? Doubt that he was ever offered an NFL head coaching job.

Jets fanboards say he declined an interview several years ago.

Additionally, according to Pro Football Talk, Matt Campbell turned down an 8-year $68 million offer to coach the Lions in 2021.

Of course, at that time, the Lions were in a ton of disarray. But looking at it in retrospect, that was a pretty crazy decision by Campbell since it appears he does want to coach in the nfl.

And oddly, Detroit hired a coach with the same last name. It’s always struck me as oddly similar that Matt Campbell was a candidate but they hired Dan Campbell. Coincidence, I’m sure.

I figured he’d be a lifer at ISU like Kirk for us but he probably sees the writing on the wall after conference realignment.

The Big 12 and more specifically ISU is not in a good place long term.

Kind of like Iowa losing big ten west

Sorry, but the Bear's misuse of talent extends well beyond the coaching staff...
It is not only a misuse of talent by the bears but they have screwed up draft picks and then they are too cheap for decades to keep their best players. Totally a business trying to win with less $$$ by the Halas and McCasky families.

See Wilbur Marshall, the the best defensive player in the NFL the year the Bears won the 1985 or so season and Super Bowl. Dave Duerson the bears starting safety sat out that year is a contract dispute and then after the Super Bowl the Bears would not raise Marshall's pay so he went free agent to the Redskins/Commanders. And boom, Wash beats the bears in the playoffs the next year in Chicago, the Wash defense becomes great and they win two or three super bowls.

I just read the Bears asked the Steelers for permission to talk to HC Tomlin, who had already said he was not interested in a change. But money might talk and making the Bears great or really good would cement Tomlin in the HOF.

Steelers said no deal

Todd Bell sat out the '85 season, not Duerson (who took his place, and made 4 straight Pro Bowls).

Wilbur Marshall was still on the Bears when they lost to the Redskins in both the '86 and '87 playoffs. Players leaving via free agency for other teams was pretty rare back then, though. The Bears did get 2 first round draft picks as compensation. Washington won 1 Super Bowl with WM on the team ('91).

And you don't have to go back 40 years and make stuff up to demonstrate how f&cked-up the Bears organization is.
