Matt Gatens to Drake?

Wonder if they will bring the former assistant back as a HC?
I would hope so for Matt’s sake.

In terms of b-ball, everything the Drake AD touches seems to turn to gold these days. I’d hate to lose him, but Drake would be a great spot for Matt to show what he’s got.

I will never understand the Gatens love. What has he done?
Agree. He has the makings of a D1 coach, but he doesn’t have a resume yet that shouts being a D1 HEAD coach. He needs some more experience, possibly head of a D2 program. I think he has a bright future…. just not ready to be a D1 head coach at the present time.

It would be a good move for Matt. He needs to spread his wings and prove himself if eventually being the HC in the Big Ten is his goal.

I think Drake can be the new Creighton in the MVC. the only game in a larger city. I would get an experienced guy.

If Drake wanted an Iowa connection with head coaching experiance and still young they may look to former Iowa player and head BB coach at Truman state Jeff Horner

Drake can do better. With the success they have had under their last 3 coaches, they can get an experience guy. No need to settle for a lesser candidate.
An experienced guy who could jump at the next bigger offer. Gatens would likely give them a much longer length of time.

Apart from being incredibly loyal to Iowa when the program was at rock bottom?

Idk whether he would make a good head coach or not (I agree he had no business being in discussion for the Iowa opening) but TONS of young guys go straight from D1 assistant to mid-major coach. Just ask Otz, Wes miller, Dusty May etc.

Where was DD head coach before getting to Drake?
20 years at Creighton. You’re right never a head coach but he had applied for the job before and the old Drake AD turned him down. Also at that point Drake was still pretty much their usual dumpster fire and the coach had left after 1 year and the whole team left. They’ve had 8 years in a row of really good success, 4-5 ncaa tournaments. Now Gatens might be the guy but I think they’ll go with someone with a little more experience. And success.

Sounds like Drake alum have increased spending to lock up a solid replacement. Doubt Matt has a chance.
