I'm probably late on this, but just saw that Mo Fleming has committed to West Virginia. The Mountaineers sent two DB's to the League last year, and seem very excited to get him. Happy for a good guy, a good player, and a Hawk for life as well. Have a great year, Maurice...

I hope Maurice does big things for WV. He always seemed like a great young man.

You have to like a player getting to play, especially when he's left for that reason & under good conditions.

Graduates from Iowa Saturday, then off to West Virginia. Met him in his first year in Iowa. Fine young man who wanted to get his degree. Hope he has a great year in the Morgantown.
Selfishly I hate to see him leave, but Jackson is the real deal and needs more field time next year with both orders leaving.

I was told by a friend in the Athletic Department that the reason Fleming left was because Ojemudia is so good.

The article i saw on this stated that Flemming was expected to be a starter this year at Iowa... As what? A nickel or Dime back?

I'm suspecting a national championship....

My feeling after chitchatting with one of the Iowa beat writers is Ojemudia and Jackson are both really really good. I think there was an outside shot with Iowas history of ta NFL DB talent that Fleming would've been able to get a late round draft pick by playing nickel but I think these other two guys are so good they would've stole some of his time and he tried safety but wasn't good enough to beat out Snyder and therefore he transferred in good standing. He was a fine teammate and is also a part of the major chemistry & leadership turnaround that Iowa experience last year. Which is what I credit to them being so good!

An NFL draft pick by playing nickel... You are insane.

I hope Fleming is a great asset for WVU and wish hm well.

Iowa put a couple Linemen and a LBer in the league with very few snaps in the past. I'm really not very flummoxed by your superfluous attempt to usurp my sanity......

Since and including Bob Sanders in 2004, Iowa has had all of EIGHT players drafted at either CB or S. Most were in rounds 3-6 and all were starters. Jordan Bernstine was a 7th rounder which was slightly odd but he did suffer injuries until his senior year IIRC.

about 30-40 DBs get drafted every year. You somehow think a BACKUP at Iowa could be one?

You missed one and there have actually been 11 since 2000 and a few others who played as FAs. One of which JJ who played for the Steelers a couple seasons went on to be one of the best DBs in the CFL for 10 years. So yes with a good Pro day, past Dbs and KFs word I suppose it was certainly possible. I would wager a few less caustic types could see my wisdom.....

I certainly didn't say it was a no-brainer, but I'd guess in your absolute world it would seem implausible?

PS… I was counting on my phone & my eyes aren't so good anymore so please fact check me as I am a stickler for the truth...

With that said my initial query didn't pull up 2016 but in 2015 alone there were 46 DB/CB/safeties chosen in the draft!

In 2014 there were 54 proving they are very valuable commodities especially from known colleges that produce that level of talent!

Anything else pepper…

FWIW....51, DBs taken this past draft. Thought people might be interested.

52 in 2013...
50 in 2012...

I did look at the numbers and meant to type CB instead of DB. I did not go into detail on every draft so I'm sure I'm still off in some years.

To cut to the chase, you're undoubtedly correct that Fleming is going to be drafted next year. Sorry to ever disagree with your almighty opinions.

Oversimplification is a weak tactic

There was about a .0000001% chance of Maurice Fleming being drafted after playing nickelback for Iowa. For one, they don't use nickel coverage that much which would have really limited his snaps. Two, he couldn't beat out Mabin who is probably a late round pick at best. Could have gotten a FA contract to try and make a team? yes and probably would have done that but that is a big difference.

Then frankly, you ought to know that when you paint people here with a broad brush you're engaging in exactly that tactic. I can tell from your posts that you really do understand the game of football. If you had social skills that allowed you to discuss rationally what you see and what others see, it could lead to you being a valued poster here... that's my opinion of course, which isn't something I demand others agree with.

Can anyone name a CB that was drafted who wasn't a starter? I imagine it will be very difficult to find and if it has happened at all it would probably be from a school like FSU or Bama.
