McCaffery opening statement at post game press conference

Dance Marathon rules. I wish I got involved when I was a student. I was too busy doing coke and playing club baseball. That's a real effin torch to pass.

Fran was noticeably choked up. Could tell what the students/dance marathon did really meant a lot to him and his family. Fran's sincere statement got me choked up too.

We're a Dance Marathon family as well. My son had leukemia when he was 16 and spent 5 months in the hospital. Dance Marathon was there in so many ways to help him.

He beat leukemia, and went on to participate as a Dancer for 4 years at Iowa.

Dance Marathon is an incredibly powerful organization, and the event itself is an experience like no other.

I often get choked up myself when talking about it.

What is awesome is that this is trickling down into the high schools, junior highs, and even elementary schools. They are raising some serious money and I hope they all know that they will make a difference when a cure for cancer is found.

Plus 2 very young boys still who will be on the team in the 2020's haha!

There's that, too! But I just don't know what program could offer him that he'd jump town for, even the blue-blood programs.

However, if Notre Dame comes calling, I bet he gives it a sniff, because he absolutely loves that school. Brey isn't going anywhere, though, so I doubt that'll ever come up.

They won't, by the time that is open he'll be in his 60s, he is ours as long as we'll have him or if he retires.

Saw that yesterday, really choked up over the event. Fran is a good guy who let's his emotions get the best of him sometimes on the court but all class off the court.

Wearing his emotions on his sleeve is one of the reasons I love the guy. That, and what he and Patrick did for our family in what could have been, (but turned out not to be) our darkest days. He has much love from this Indiana family!

Sounds like a story I would like to hear .....

You may have heard snippets of our story a few years ago, it had been mentioned in an online story, can't remember if it was ESPN or SI. Long story short, my daughter had thyroid issues a few years ago, and it boiled down to she had a 50/50 shot of the nodules being cancerous. I sent an email to the basketball secretary (Shelly Deutsch, who is right up there with Fran as a class individual) and asked if Coach and Patrick might be able to send my daughter an email with some words of encouragement. Right away Shelly said he would want to do something. When he got back into town, he decided a phone call would be better than an email. We were truly touched. They ended up having a very encouraging, upbeat conversation for 30-40 minutes. He has stayed in touch, inviting us to games, making sure that my daughter and Patrick met, and still follows up on how she is doing occasionally. I also chronicled our story on my Facebook page after we found out all was well. Mike Wilbon can KMA, he hasn't a clue who Fran McCaffery is.

Thanks for sharing, glad to hear all is well. Such a scary thing when kids get sick :(

Wow...we have ourselves world class coach. Thanks for sharing that story again and we are all happy to hear things worked out for your family.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words! In a couple of weeks, she will be signing a LOI to attend an NAIA school here in Indiana to study nursing and play volleyball. God is good!
