this was the rule, but there are plenty of documented exceptions now.

Mark Emmert just reported that he's a good candidate for a medical hardship waiver.
case keenum and grant Gibbs off the top of my head.
Keenum got a sixth year because he had two full years of injury. Gibbs simply got a medical redshirt but didn't get an extension on the 5 year clock.
Thorne got a sixth year because of two full years of injury.
Nunge will only have one full year of injury. In the rules there isn't an exception for when you have a voluntary redshirt. NCAA could grant I guess if petitioned but it would be a very rare case.
I do see though, in the new rules if the kid can show that he was forced to redshirt by the school he may be able to get an additional year.

Gibbs played 6 years. So did Keenum.
Keenum wasn’t injured his first year until they applied for the waiver.
Didn’t he have a back injury at some point since joining the program as well? I may be misrememberingNunge did break his foot last year but I thought it was after he said he was reshirting.
He was recovering from mono in the off season and lost some weight per the last paragraph of this story, so he might have an excuse there.Didn’t he have a back injury at some point since joining the program as well? I may be misremembering
