Message Board Rumor: Fox offers $2 mil to Clark to take COVID year

In all honesty, I truly hope not, and I hope she moves on to the W. If you think the last month has been bad just wait until next season and the train load of shit she's going to get for "record padding". She's going to get called out by people from many sides probably 10x worse then this year. I don't want this for her, she doesn't deserve to go out that way. I also think thats not how she wants to be remembered. I may very well be in the minority here, and so be it, but I really hope she moves forward to new challenges. Through these 4 years and the next month she'll have given way more of herself then anyone should ever expect. As fans we should realize this is not in her best interest, and I hope the people she listens to for advice feel likewise.
Those fans cheering for "one more year" are thinking about themselves, and not whats best for her, after all she's given in her career...
People will make comments, but I think that if she breaks all the records this year it will be tempered a bit. What it will do is put many of those records in the "unbreakable" category because future players will likely not get nearly as many games as she will have with another full season.

It's hard to believe that Iowa will be better next year. Hannah should be pushing All-Big 10 next season, especially if Clark is there to feed her, but they will need someone else that can hit the 3 reliably. Although they do have some very good recruits coming in so who knows.

Who gives a shit about the 5th year stats?

I would think the draw of playing in packed arenas, home and away, vs WNBA crowds with decidedly less passion for their teams, would be an easy decision.
Honestly, $2 million + whatever her other endorsements are, which will go up given the ratings she pulls whenever she is on TV, might be enough to come back for a 5th year. And it might be helpful if she explained it that way. "I was offered a deal I couldn't turn down". Just be honest on why it is you came back. People may not like it, but not many would say they wouldn't do the same. And then make sure you perform to expectations, even if the team isn't as good. Up to this point, CC has shown that it doesn't matter what the circumstances are, she will perform at an elite level. That's a big part of the reason she is so popular. Not only does she say and do the right things off the court, and on the court for the most part, she backs it up every night.

But that's assuming this deal is true.

This has been making the rounds on Twitter and Reddit…

This is wild, but believable. Not legal, but the conference, conference foes, city of Iowa city/coralville, University of Iowa, state of iowa among others should be figuring out a way to get her big checks. The economic impact she's had on these entities (among others) won't be matched ever again.....

Fox paying Caitlin would be illegal? Guess I don't understand the rules with NIL... Seems they could just say it's an NIL deal

One more reason she should go to the WNBA? She had her four years. It's time to pass the baton to the younger players. They came to Iowa to play basketball, too. If Clark comes back for a 5th year, some of them will be sitting on the bench for another year. She will essentially be taking 40 minutes per game and an extra year from other players. One might even say that would be selfish.

This doesn’t rly apply to Clark specifically bc we don’t have any returning players who can play PG besides KJE — but most think she really was only ever recruited to be a reserve (largely due to her size — 5’4). Clark’s heir apparent at the 1 — Aaliyah Guyton — just tore her ACL and that means she will miss all summer/fall…wouldn’t be surprised if she just red shirts.

Clark doesn’t owe the program anything more and this is not her problem at all but if she leaves, Bluder will be in a pickle. She will likely have to rely on freshmen reserves to play point (which will be bumpy, to say the least) or rearrange players positionally (really not ideal). And unless someone transfers out, we will not be able to bring anyone else in.

What does one have to do with the other?

In any case Martin has come a long way but she didn’t rly show up til her senior year. Even through most of her junior year she was often completely and inexplicably absent from the stat pad. I recall game after game with zero points. She was a SF who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) take it to the hoop. I love her for sure and I’m never nervous when she has the ball but to pretend she is irreplaceable is just not accurate. She will be missed on multiple levels but she’s not an all American.

Syd, Kylie and maybe even Jada all likely have higher ceilings than Kate at the 3. Again I love Kate and I believe in her when she’s on the court but it took her til her 5th year to get where she is — and she is still somewhat turnover prone and limited in certain respects by a lack of athleticism.

At the 2, McCabe is a much better shooter than Gabbie. She doesn’t play D as well…but Kylie does (even if her 3 hasn’t been falling). Kylie is likely the quickest person on the team not named Clark or Stuelke. And then of course Stuelke will be back next year and I believe she can average 20ish pts per game. She is already basically as efficient as Czinano (63% vs 66%)…and she isn’t nearly as vulnerable to being neutered by more athletic kids, as Czinano (rather frequently) was.

I get that people are nervous about losing Kate/Gabbie but everyone was nervous about losing Mon/McKenna last year and it’s mostly been fine (which I always believed it would be). If Clark were to come back she would continue to have talent around her, not to mention a fast new post (#4 C in her class) whom I believe can be as productive as any of our veteran posts.

Without Clark, Iowa will certainly take a step back, largely bc we’ll be leaning on freshmen to play PG. Hard to avoid when your floor general goes from NPOY to freshmen. Really a shame that Guyton’s first year will unavoidably be touch and go, if she plays at all. She certainly has the skills to be a star, but she will now be a year behind schedule….I’d guess next year will likely be a bit of a wash for us. Even if we can eke out a decent resume, we’ll be wondering how much better we’d be with Guyton on the floor / at full strength.
Losing Czinano and Warnock was as big if not a bigger blow than losing Kate and Gabby based on the roster we have now.

Yeah I’d agree that those 2 are more difficult to replace than Martin/Marshall, but I’d argue they’ve done a pretty good job of doing so. Today’s NET rank has Iowa at #5 and they are still very much in the running for a B1G title/1 seed. Losing their steadiness is frustrating but the improved speed, ball-handling, rebounding, defense in this year’s team makes up for it.

I thought someone mentioned Connor was working with the Pacers. If that is true, CC is most likely gone because the Indiana Fever have the #1 pick in the draft.

Yes this is common knowledge and people have mentioned this ad nauseum. But I sincerely hope she doesn’t make such a huge decision based on some kid she is dating at 22.

Idk why everyone is convinced she is ready to settle down in Indiana at 22 either. I hope at least a part of her is curious about the wider world. Power to her, whatever decision she makes (and again i don’t see how she can come back at all given our roster situation) but when my friends and I were 22, we were all so, so ready to get out there and experience new things, meet new people, explore and experience life outside the Midwest. It’s kinda weird to me that no one wonders if she is even a bit curious about that possibility…

She will have had more like 3.7 years. She did lose 9 games or so during COVID. I don't think a freshman would mind sitting behind Clark for a year. This would be a unique, one off, situation. With that being said, I do think she will move on for competition reasons.

Also, here are Caitlin's current deals:

Company sponsorships:
1. Gatorade
2. Nike
3. State Farm
4. H & R Block
5. Topps Trading Cards
6. Hy-Vee
7. Bose
8. The Vinyl Shop (her first deal, in Aug 2021)
9. Buick (ahead of the 2023 NCAA Tournament)
10. Goldman Sachs (a commercial was released during 2023 NCAA Tournament)
11. Shoot-A-Way (basketball shooting machine company)

Appearance Fees?
1. 2023 John Deere Classic (played golf w/ Zach Johnson)
2. Caitlin Clark Night at Iowa Cubs, June 2023 (she signed autographs)

Other:
1. 2023 Caitlin Clark Summer Basketball Camp
Nice. Gotta believe CC is making far more from these deals than she would from a WNBA salary.

She will still have the biggest of those deals in the W and they will probably pay her more. Gatorade, Nike, Hy-Vee arent going anywhere. State Farm, Buick, H&R block are probably one and done deals. I doubt she does any further spots for them so it’s moot whether she stays or goes for those. When she goes to the W she will also have new local opportunities wherever she lands.

If Paige Bueckers is getting $2M to come back, then CC should get $4M lol.
Honestly, if you look at all of the networks together, increased ticket sales, local businesses which profit from more people, etc., her individual impact is probably in the tens of millions of dollars, if not more.

Why would companies pay her more for marketing deals as a WNBA player? They’re barely ever on TV?

Maybe the participants of this thread will know more than the average dude, but I am a huge Caitlin fan and I could not tell you what network the WNBA is on or whether all of her games would be televised. It could be that her most value in terms of eyeballs on screens is in college.

Bc she will be a professional and not an amateur. She will someday be in the Olympics. Her profile and her brand will grow as she focuses more on her career. She will probably have her own apparel line at some point for example. She will also, like any adult, negotiate for more money in exchange for doing more work over time. If Nike doesn’t pay her more for her next spot than they did for her last spot, she needs a new manager.

If she goes to the Indiana Fever, this was their viewing schedule last year. Not great. Also, they only play 40 games, which is barely more than what she is playing per year at Iowa.

Thats not necessarily how it works with athletes or in today’s media world. She’s not getting paid to have a Nike logo on her jersey. She gets paid per appearance, campaign, etc. Sabrina is a good comp and she is still a very high profile athlete who stays busy earning.

Youre right tho in terms of social media and her social media followers aren’t going anywhere. She will likely break a million followers soon and ventures like the Bose spot she did will continue to be lucrative for her.

She will also be able to do way more appearances / media opportunities if she leaves, which she is less able to do at Iowa. She also just won’t be asked bc of her status as an amateur (see Aliyah Boston on BTN — she is a pro and so she is afforded that opportunity in a way college athletes aren’t).

That said it’s all just one year and she will earn $$$ either way, she will head to the W sooner or later. I doubt she is rly too concerned about the bottom line. $2 mil from Fox might be a difference maker but its probably BS.

Caitlin is an amateur only in the technical sense of the pretense that the NCAA wants to continue to uphold. This isn't an indictment of her; this is acknowledging the change that has taken place with the NIL decision. She makes more money than the vast majority of wnba players, maybe all of them.
If she can make more next year staying at Iowa, that would be a wise move. As it stands currently, her media profile is sky high. I don't think it's a given that continues in the wnba.

McCabe would probably be the PG next season if Clark doesn't come back with KJE/Stremlow backing her up. McCabe has been working at the point in junk time and played the position in HS. Her ability to shoot/distribute would be the best option. In that scenario, Kylie starts the two.

Appreciate your insight as always Gabe. I’m not convinced of Taylor’s ability to create shots so I’ve been weary of this possibility. So I dm’d an evaluator for PGH I follow (they’re very familiar with our personnel — both coaches and players) and asked them their thoughts.

It’s their professional opinion that Stremlow is the best option to stand in for Guyton. They don’t think McCabe has the skillset and they believe that the ideal depth chart for us is Guyton -> Stremlow -> Johnson -> McCabe / Levin and Im inclined to agree.

They pointed to Stremlow’s court vision as the differentiator. Certainly not ideal for next season but longterm the bright side is some nice depth. I also think McCabe’s catch and shoot abilities are way too valuable to risk losing them amid a reshuffle.

I haven't seen enough of Stremlow to really get a feel for her. I was basing my analysis that Bluder seems to be grooming her to at least assist with PG duties based on the frequency she plays the PG position in junk time. I feel that whether it's Stremlow or McCabe, a lot will ride on how much Taylor can continue to shape her body in the offseason. If she can add 15-20 pounds without losing her speed and shooting, she'll be much more effective creating off the dribble. Whoever starts will have a steep learning curve next year should Clark not decide to come back.

That figure is so overblown. There’s no way she has that much in assets. That’s a LOT of money. She certainly has a six figure bank account but I’d guess it’s closer to $500k than $1 million. People forget that a lot of her deals were one time things, some were well over a year ago. She is not earning $800k a year from all her deals like some websites like to say. A typical Gatorade / Nike spot pays $50k. Same with a sponsored Insta vid. I don’t see how it can possibly be adding up to these ridiculous clickbaity sums.

I used to live in NYC and during that time my roommate dated a very successful YouTuber. This was around 2017. I am not one to shy away from asking questions about money. I learned he would make about $40k off a typical video. The $50k for a Gatorade ad I learned about from a sports journalist on Reddit.

I'm certainly no media expert, but $50K per spot? Does this mean she receives $50K each time they run a commercial featuring her? That certainly adds up. I recall an actor who was the face of Dell Computer commercials back in early 2000's was receiving $17K per spot or per month... Theoretically, if she receives a monthly sum for each run she could easily be in the seven figures range. Not arguing, just talking through mathmatical possibilities.

Is the Bally Sports <insert City/State> even a thing anymore? I thought most teams were bailing on Bally's.

I would venture to say there are a lot of high level conversations going on right now and I would assume the participants are of course Caitlin, but also the tv networks, the NBA, Iowa and the NCAA. Caitlin is the unicorn that women's basketball has been waiting for. She is Bird/Magic, Jordan, Kobe, and Lebron all rolled up into one. Not only is she great but she is also white, straight, knows how to speak and does everything right off the court. She doesn't have tattoos and she looks like a normal all-american type of girl. Those traits allow her to be relatable to so many demographics.

Before we start debating what I said, think about it first. This has nothing to do with equality or racism or feminism or sexism. Zero. While you can make rules and laws to make certain things happen, you can never make a rule or law that makes somebody like someone. What made those greats I mentioned above is that they had/have wide appeal and they elevated their sport. If Kobe was Kobe in every sense but it was known he was gay, I would bet my house his popularity would have suffered greatly. If Bird was covered with tattoos and had a gold grill he would not have had the appeal he had. Magic and Jordan had billion dollar smiles and that was just as important as their games. The majority of sports fans are white men, like it or not, and those white men are the ones that support the companies that provide the advertising for the networks and the endorsements and if athletes do not appeal to those white men there is no support. This is the real and ugly truth and the networks and the NBA know this more than anyone. So when a great, once in a generation, player comes along like Caitlin that can elevate an entire sport they are going to do whatever they have to in order for that to happen.

The sports journalist who gave the number said $50k per campaign. Time, labor, etc. I don’t know about residuals tho. Sounds like it’s not typical for this kind of spot but I could certainly be wrong. Even if that’s the case, I don’t believe her State Farm commercial, for example, will air much after March.

I haven't watched the WNBA since my team folded. If CC goes pro next year, that will change big time.

If she goes to the Indiana Fever, this was their viewing schedule last year. Not great. Also, they only play 40 games, which is barely more than what she is playing per year at Iowa.

And what was the Iowa game TV schedule before CC? And after? This seems to support going to the WNBA. If Iowa women's basketball became a must-view event, it's logical to believe this could happen even more easily @ Indiana.
