Friday night. Let’s talk booze.

I’ve been way into Mezcal lately. I’m not even a big tequila guy but Mezcal is different.

Educate me.

So far, I’ve found two I really like:

Dos Hombres
Sacrificio

I’ve tried Illegal and Casimigos and they’re good but 2d tier.

I had Vida at a bar and it was solid.

Any recs?

So far I haven’t found any Mezcal I liked better than even a cheap Tequila so I don’t have more than 4 bottles in my current collection and none good enough I would rec. When they’re done I will replace them with something else.

But I do love Desert Door Sotols especially the one aged in oak.

While tequila must be made from blue agave in a few Mexican counties and Mezcal can be made anywhere with any species of agave, Sotols taste a lot like a more interesting and vegetal tequila but is made from a completely unrelated sweet succulent plant called sotol. Not only is sotol as good or better than tequila depending on your tastes, but it uses up far less water and electricity in its farming so it’s a better plant to raise for the environment. Plus Desert Door is made in Texas.

I have been on a mezcal kick for the last year or so. I typically sip it, room temperature and neat, with a little Sal de gusano (worm salt).
Unfortunately, my local liquor stores are very limited, Montelobos is not bad, Monte Alban is a bit harsh. I really like Vago Elote, it is very good.
