Good for Tom:

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller is joining 15 state attorneys in a friend of the court brief supporting a federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration. The states of Washington and Minnesota filed the lawsuit.

The brief states the executive order inflicts harm on the states, including:

  • Disruption of faculty staffing, student attendance, and administration at state colleges and universities, as well as additional costs many of the states cannot afford.
  • Similar injuries to state medical institutions, and disrupting health care for some of the neediest populations due to decreased staffing.
  • Disruption of the millions of dollars students, tourists, and business visitors contribute to the state's economy and through tax revenues.
"The president has broad authority to oversee our nation's immigration policies and procedures, but not even the president has authority to circumvent our Constitution's fundamental guarantees of equal protection, religious freedom and due process," Miller said.

The brief is signed by attorneys general in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
