Minni Grades….

What are you and your hunting partners coming to Iowa to hunt the last week of January? And where are your farms in southern Iowa?

We won’t actually be hunting. Late Muzzleloader goes out the 10th. We always take 3-4 days at the end of January to get our feeders out and filled for the winter, take down a bunch of cameras and move some blinds and stands. Some years look for sheds depending if any of our bigger bucks have dropped.

One farm is in Lucus County and the other is about 45 min away in Clarke Co. We also lease a couple more in both. Where do you run around at ?

Van Buren and Lee. You and your hunting partners all non residents?

Angel Rivera gets a B. He had good control of the matches all night. Minimal stalling calls, didnt care for the one against ADS but only because he could have called many times earler against Gliva. If your going to wait til the end of the match, just forget it. Angel seemed really concerned about hands to face last night.

Thought Angel did ok overall. He could have accelerated the three-minute review of the locked hands call on Desanto. I suppose that was technically the correct call, but Desanto's head was turned away from Angel and it appeared to me at least he was unaware that Angel had awarded him the takedown. In any event, Desanto was gassed at the end of his match so the three minutes may have benefited him as much as Minnesota.

I hate how he involves him self so much in the outcome or how a match is dictated. I think it’s funny that everyone thinks a wrestler is stalling if the other wrestler is in a collar tie pushing with zero offensive intention. Angel Is by far the worst official I’ve ever watched in my opinion. He acts is if ppl are there to watch him.

When I went to officials training years ago, the very first class the instructor's first lesson was to remember that nobody is there to watch you "styling" on the mat.

He does preen before the cameras. That's for sure. I have a negative reaction to that too.

Don't see how it takes 5 minutes to figure out a guy locked his hands.

And don't think he was gassed so much as flustered. For some reason or another that challenge just totally threw him off for the rest of his match, thinking it benefited him in any way is crazy.

Absolutely agree. I umpire a lot of travel baseball for my sons teams when umps no show, and I always tell both coaches before games I will not have anything to do with the outcome. So many times you see referees, umps, or officials who determine the outcome of kids sports. Pisses me off.

He looked at the time repeatedly in the third. I read that as gassed, not flustered.

WOW! I believe i am about the biggest homer on this board and I am kinda shocked at how everyone saw this match? Team looked very flat up and down the line up. Every year we seem to go through this and it is always passed off as "training thru" the match????

Whatever it is? It has not been corrected and in my opinion, needs to be! The team as a whole, looked small in just about every weight class. Maybe this is their philosophy for the end of the year? Have guys who are not cutting too much and at nationals with 3 weigh in they will benefit? Only thing I can think of.

125- Kid needs more HP. True Freshman, will be very good. Looks to be a boarder line AA

133- Have no idea what I watched??? The Tasmanian devil opened up the show and then disappeared uncommonly? I also have to take issue with not seeing better finishes to his off side!!! I believe a monkey could have shown him a few things by now!

141- Jayden in my opinion is a victim of being at IOWA. What I mean is now he is in the lime light, everyone knows him, sees him, and has a game plan for him. His counter Wrestling from his feet is so good, it appears no one will shoot on him any more. He too should have developed a better go to shot by now!

149- BIG TD at end, but way too close for comfort

157- finding ways to lose now. Winning the match, wrestling well. Then takes a stall call from top on a standing position!?!?! What??? why??? Without that stall call he could have played a little defense.

165- As was said already, where was the BULL?

174- First match back, not the complete KemDawg I am use to, but give him a pass.

184- Snap and Blast may have been the best series of the night. Looked the best out of everyone to me

197- seems to be getting worse to me. Will be in HIGE trouble against Dean who I though he could/should beat.

Heavy- out gunned, trimming down is not the same as bulking up! Give Stevenson credit for being as good as he is!

We appear to be in trouble in a dual against the F*** guys. their NY Yankees of wrestling program with all its new imports and without our Lee, is going to be a rough road. We will need an upset or 2 from 33, 41, 74. I do not believe we can get one at 84? Big Cass has to win as does 49, 57, 65. I think their new 25 is too strong for Ayla? Hope to be wrong here. I can nots see Warner beating dean, also hope I am wrong.

For NCAAs, we still have a chance but B1Gs and seeding is going to be HUGE!!!!
I’m with Iron. Hawks looked flat. GS was the only one who put the hammer down. I thought GS could have pinned Cass if he wanted too.

He looked at the time repeatedly in the third. I read that as gassed, not flustered.
To each their own, I read the fact that he had 3 take downs before the challenge and what, zero after as him being flustered, there was even a point where he looked back at the coaches like "what do I do?"

For some reason or another I think he just lost his composure and with his issues I think he sometimes has a hard time getting back in that zone.

From a gopher perspective, some of y’all don’t wanna hear it if you tell me to F off I get that lol.
Carlson - B. I’ve seen Marinelli stall a lot of guys out in his long and storied career but Carlson got the first takedown and kept forward pressure all night. Good for his first start ever.

O’Reilly - C. Clearly outgunned, just had nothing for Kemerer. Good to keep it to a decision but he gets tech’d against a full strength Kem. Hope Sparks gets a medical shirt this year and bumps to 174 next.

Skillings - F. This is the first time I’ve ever seen Skillings wrestle for the gophers and it was totally uninspiring. Would have loved to see Salazar there but obviously was hurt.

Foy - D. He could have taken Warner down 4 times in the third if he would just take shots. Why do you not shoot? Warner gasses more than any big ten wrestler on earth? SHOOT.

Gable - A.

Mckee - A. I was convinced in my head that if Ayala came out McKee was losing. Everything was pointing to that. Ayala had closed the gap, he had the crowd on his side, etc. I honestly think the crowd had something to do with Ayala losing. All the stalling chants made him push and push right into Mckees doubles which lost him the match.

Gliva - C. Wrestled close but never took shots. Kind of like all his matches. He’s much improved but what’s the point if you don’t attack. Desanto looked weird though. What’s up with that?

Bergeland - C. Kept it close against a top 3 guy but needs to ATTACK. It’s been proven that this year for some reason, lesser guys can score on Eierman. Take advantage of that.

Blockhus - C. I feel like I’m repeating myself. Take some F&;!/&?g shots and you win. Blockhus and Murin are neck and neck.

Brayton - C. See above and above and above. Brayton scores off re-shots and capitalizes off guys getting out of position. Kaleb Young NEVER gets out of position. Bad match up for us.

my board is boring and our posts get no interaction so I am posting these here. Do with it what you will.
Way too many of you have liked this post. I think that means I wasn’t mean enough to the hawks. Spencer Lee is overrated! Ha!

i like the perspective from the opponent. As I read through, seen alot of the same things I think about Hawks as Im watching. Like the Carlson review and how he got the first td but didnt go back in and being frustrated with that.

I pride myself in being objective. Gophs are in a rough spot right now. Eggum has recruited his ass off in 2021-2023, though. If some of those kids come to fruition we could be right back in it.

Performance not perfect but I don’t know if we want to be firing on all cylinders in early January. Peaking is a real thing and I assume we’re training through these duals. I’m not worried about any of these guys at the moment. Young needs to gut out one of these wins at some point, but as I’ve eluded to in the past, he’s shown up at NCAAs and not in season.

We all got what we wanted with the lineup (save pindox, sucks for your fam but is what is) so here’s to forging ahead with these ten.

125 - B- Man does he look small in person. I think he might have gotten a little flustered had an even pace to me maybe tried to catch his breath in the 2nd period which opened him up. I still see a pretty good chance at an All-American spot here. Future is bright.
133 - B Got the win when things where not going his way. Way off his game though. Looked like he was about to be sick heading off the bat.
141 -B- So frustrated here this year with JE. He has just looked so flat all year but he keeps winning so I don't really know.
149- B+ Quality win for Max. I wish it would not have come some so late but I feel like Max was starting to impose his will by the end of the match here so I felt good if it would have gone into SV.
157 - C+ The meat grinder continues to for KY. I think he looked better than he has all year in this match but he was defiantly wresting not to lose in the 3rd period not wresting to win.
165 C+ Bull looked really flat against an inferior opponent. Not looking like the number 2 guy in the country.
174 A+ Controversy aside it was great to see Grandpa on the mat. The should looked to be not doing to great but he wrestled through it which takes a lot of guts. Looked like a guy who had not wrestled live since last year in the 3rd period though.
184 A+ I want to see this version of Assad every time out. I probably spent way to much time during the match trying to figure out what his tattoo is supposed to be now.
197 B- Warner doing Warner I guess. I hate it but I can't argue to much with the results.
285 No Grade Gable is like a force of Nature at this point. Like a black hole if you get to close you are pretty much going to get taken down.

I felt weird giving Gable the standing O but I he deserved it after winning a Gold Medal for the Country. He's going to be the next The Rock I think.

The five matches where we were heavy favorites...Gophers pretty much blocked off for 7 minutes. They made no attempt to win those matches. None.

Pretty hard to get bonus in that scenario.

Not sure which dual you watched.

Gopher wrestling has fallen so far since the heydeys of Robinson.
And my thought is that if we are “blocked off for 7 minutes” and we are heavily favored, we need to tweak our tactics and kick some ass. You sound like the reason our guys somewhat sucked is because those gophers were mean to us and prevented us from doing our normal thing. We need to kick ass even against way lesser opponents who try to block us off the whole match.

I think that was a pretty fair assessment, my friend! :)

Iowa fans A
CHA is the best place to wrestle in the country. Gave Steveson a standing ovation after his match. This doesn’t happen with newbie fans this happens with fans loyal to the sport for decades. Some of you with a gripe against Steveson going to want to flunk the Iowa fans for that. But it speaks volumes for the knowledge and quality of the Iowa fan base, IMO.
I'm with you. I'm not a Steveson fan because of past antics. But that has nothing to do with his skill set. The guy is one of the best ever at HWT and deserved the standing O, especially since he acted like he'd won once or twice in the past. I have no issues with this version of Steveson...

One is a non resident one is a resident. I also have a couple rentals on my Lucus Co farm.
C'mon man, your not taking hints very well. We're looking for permission to hunt on your land. Just say okay. My brother-in-law even has land close by, so I'd have a free place to stay. Promise I'd only shoot a little buck. 😎

I would have been more alarmed if Iowa throttled MN. As it was Iowa dominated the box score from start to finish and that’s good enough when it comes to that.

As far as the wrestling I loved seeing our guys wrestle those long-close-in-score matches. I enjoyed watching them win ugly, win pretty, and win gritty.

Winning ugly is still ugly, especially against unranked opponents. We looked awful, and there is no positive spin for that.

At this point in the season, don't panic. We don't know where they are in training cycles, weight problems after holidays, or whether illness is in the locker room. Healthiest team at the end will win.
Food for thought…

Avoiding a significant taper heading into these two weeks wouldn’t surprise me…so I buy the “training through” argument. Payoff is 8 weeks down the road.

Also listened to a Pro Cyclists who described taking a week off mid-season. He warned anyone heeding his advice to beware…it’s hard to take the week off and it’s hard coming back, especially the first week or two back. Payoff is 8 weeks down the road.

At what point does the Minnesota AD say "I've seen enough" of Eggum to know he is not the answer going forward?

Or maybe he simply is just happy to avoid another scandal?

They have a decent mid tier team. They are scrappy and dont back out to edge much even when there wrestlers are big underdogs. I think there ranked 13 and I could see them higher than that but no where near contending for Big10 or Nattys. Gable Stevenson was big pick up but got not enough other big name to get back to where they were. I dont know for sure, but I think they were in the running for Hall at one time and lost to PSU, that could have changed their trajectory.

Coach had a little fire after the match. He was irritated. He expects a better showing vs the Boilermakers I'm thinking.
I tried clicking on the link you posted regarding coach Brands postgame presser, it looked like it was behind a paywall. Do you know if it has been uploaded elsewhere? Tia!
