MN Doctors: Remove football from public schools

Starts with doctors... Then lawsuits for not listening to doctors.... Then it becomes to expensive to insure.

The game needs to fundamentally change to survive in public schools

Anyone who feeds GMO foods to children will soon be shot...of course, they are harmless...but that doesn't matter...

Because getting rid of America's favorite sport in public school is gonna be so easy. Most reports like this are full of garbage anyway.

The continued emasculization of Western society. Pathetic

They said the same thing when gladiator fights were outlawed. It's called progress. Civilization will be ok without football I'm pretty sure.

I had 5 documented concussions before college and who know hows how many others plus micro concussions. I deal with anxiety, depression and severe memory loss. I'll never know if concussions caused it, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Yep. Liberalism is going to be the end of it all. One small step at a time until we are so weak and vulnerable that we implode
You do realize that the U of I and Iowa City are hotbeds of Liberalism. I'm proud to say, that's what makes Iowa City the biggest, best, little city in the Big Ten. And that!, is, thank God why Iowa City is not Lincoln f'n Nebraska.

The liberal part of Iowa city is the biggest downside of the that little city...

I hope these same doctors are talking about banning everything that has the potential to harm you in life and later in life. Things like alcohol, drugs, any food that is bad for you, driving, flying and the list goes on and on. If not these doctors are either hypocrites or just illogical.

I completely understand. I had a similar experience playing running back and linebacker in high school back in the 80s. Several concussions, kept playing even in the same game when I had concussions. I had one 65 yard TD run after getting absolutely hammered at the line of scrimmage by a LB from the other team, helmet-to-helmet hit. I didn't remember any of the run even as I watched it in film study the day after the game. I was like, "You mean I kept running and scored a TD?" The other players and coaches said, "Yeah. And you ran for another 50 yards the rest of the game and scored another TD." I didn't remember any of it. Completely blacked out on my feet, but kept going somehow. And now? Yeah, seriously bad headaches, spinal problems, and whatnot 25 years later. People can post all they want about being a pussy or whatnot, but head-to-head collisions at full speed, even for high school players (and I played against Darren Woodson, Philippi Sparks, and other NFL pros while in HS) are very serious. I don't think the sport should be banned, but certainly precautions that didn't exist in the past need to be taken. I would definitely like to have whatever health I would have had back if I had known what was going to come decades later. As a high school student, a teenager, you have no clue, you just do what you're expected to do. The consequences occur decades later.

Pretty funny... Alcohol is banned early in life when the most damage could be inflicted. The most damaging drugs are outlawed. We understand more about food than we ever have allowing people to make healthy decisions. And of course the benefits of driving/flying are comparable to a game. But yeah good point?

How would we ever evolve if we took your attitude towards everything? Thats the list that would be interesting. I mean why should we stop terrorism if cancer is way more likely to kill you?

And did you read the article? It was only talking about public schools and how the risks aren't adequately explained. Why would it be such a terrible thing to lose a GAME from public school or have it be fundamentally changed?

Where does the revenue for these schools come from once football is banned?

Basketball? Soccer? Volleyball?

Why no boxing or gymnastics in high school? Both used to be there

I like football but don't quite understand why it is needed in public high schools.

Huh? Revenue from football at a public high school? Do some research and get back to us..... I'd be shocked to find a school that puts football revenue towards education.

Maybe you were joking?

We used to require males to enter the draft and become citizens who could learn the value of sacrifice, service, unit survival, defending the constitution, even to the point of death. These "servants" even if they didn't serve in combat, brought such values to all institutions of our country. Now, a huge amount of our tax dollars are used to share the propaganda of the left...and to instill in our citizens the belief that they are victims and that they are each, the center of the universe, more valuable that anyone or anything else, and deeply entitled to whatever they might want. Of course, sprinkled in are the mindless warnings against capitalism, traditional marriage, Christianity, white males, racism (of whites only) GMO seeds, Western culture, authority, success, oil, heterosexual marriage, internal combustion engines, competition in sports, the military and a basket of other popular items of the day. This thoughtless propaganda is spewed by tenured professors and the elite press...who are "called" and chosen to instruct us all about their knowledge. Their trained mobs travel about trying to overthrow anything that upsets their little lives of entitlement. The "evil" of football is only one little bud on this taxpayer funded tree of indoctrination.

Wow. o_O

I really want to be part of one of those trained mobs, but I also like football..I hope I don't have to choose.

Revenue in southern states might actually be affected, of course they pay their high school coaches 6 figures in some places to just coach football and not teach any classes.

In the midwest? Not so much. Most schools are lucky to break even after transportation and equipment costs are figured in.

It doesn't have to be either/or living...freedom allows both...loving football and living as a victim...

Enjoy!

Ah yes ... another US citizen touting the military for "defending the Constitution" but yet deplores fellow US citizens exercising freedoms provided for by the Constitution.

You claim that "liberals" instill the belief that we are all victims while penning a post that simply screams "we are being victimized by liberals." A "victim" bemoaning those who complain of victimization. I'm not sure that your post could be any more ironic.

But, hey, you are entitled to keep believing that conscription is the cure for what ails this country. One of the beautiful aspects of this country is the freedom to express one's thoughts and ideas and to subject them to public critique and analysis.

As for your grasp of history, I'm pretty sure that a significant number of those who were drafted in the 1950s and 1960s might take issue with the first sentence of your post.

It's actually starting already at the middle school level. I'd expect it will be out of most middle schools in the next 10-15 years with high school likely to follow starting in places like California, Massachusetts etc...

Not sure why we need to outlaw football in schools. I played from 5th grade all the way through 4 years of college. I had only one concussion but every year I knew the risks and I chose to play. My parents early on maybe didnt know the risks but even today parents do. There is choice in if you let your kids play or not. Don't take away someones choice or right to choose to partake in something. There is to much of that in this country anymore. To much of one group of people telling another group of people what they can an cant do. In football if you choose to play know that you might have medical issues down the road and don't blame anyone if you do. You and your parents have a choice.

Military service isn't a cure all...never said that. But we have lost our ability or desire to provide "myths" to our future generations...beyond selfishness and victimization... This, historically, doesn't have a happy ending.

Mindless mobs, unable to think critically, or beyond their own individual stories of victimization (or is it personal failure or motivation)...make for a weak foundation and lead to an eventual collapse and chaos.

And I like the logic (or lack of logic)...a certain number of athletes are harmed by football...outlaw football. Anecdotal evidence leading to generalizations... Everything in life has risk...you manage risk and make your choices accordingly...and if you are hurt...you, and you alone hold yourself accountable. Responsible living...

Lots of narrow mindedness in this thread. I think it's just people hating change.

Why don't public schools have the right to stop supporting a football team? Lots of public schools are self insured - why should tax dollars be exposed to this risk that we know a lot more about now than we did when you were playing?

The only "choice" it's removing is the choice to play on that high school team. Private leagues would fill the void.

Again - did you read the article?

Gay/lesbian marriage? War on Christianity! War on traditional marriage!
Climate change? War on capitalism! War on success!
Police brutality? War against whites!
Red cups at Starbucks? War on Christianity!

I'm pretty sure that you and I have differing views on what constitutes a "mindless mob" which cannot think critically for themselves. I happen to believe that it exists on both ends of the political spectrum.

Football won't be outlawed by "liberals." That's scapegoating. If football goes away - and it's not happening soon - it will be the result of the cumulative medical studies, equipment costs, health care costs and decisions by parents that they do not want their kids exposed to the dangers inherent in the sport.

Sounds a lot like market economics to me ...... I would expect the complainers to be all in favor of what the market dictates.

Dude, you are crazy.. And I don't mean the "Wooo you are so fun to be around because you're so crazy" kind. I mean the "I'd tell him his pants are on backwards but then he might shoot everyone here." Kind of crazy..

If a doctor wants to make headlines an easy target is to go after football. You will be telling the soccer mom's what they want to hear. No matter what the alarmists may want to say. Football is staying. It is adapting and will continue to adapt to make it safer.

I do wonder when you hear bold statements like take it out of the HS's. If some of their findings are agenda driven. There are people who hate how important football is to our culture.

We should not ignore these type findings but use them to adapt the game.

Change isnt always good. A lot of change today is forced change and is not for the good of the people. You force football to become a private thing and all of sudden you make it to expensive for the average joe family as well as fair opportunity for all goes away. There are a lot of sports that are not in schools right now and are made private. Most american families can't afford to sign their kids up for those sports and many kids are picked over in those leagues leaving them on the outside looking in. For many kids football is an escape in their life don't take that away from them just because you think you know whats best for them.

I want to preface all of this by stating how much I loved playing football. I have coached it at the high school level and I am still a huge fan of the sport. Those of you that have played, know it is one of those things that just gets into your blood. As a parent, I have visualized my son playing the sport later on in life. Simply put, I consider myself a football fanatic.

Here's the thing, we know a lot more about football and it's role in concussions/head trauma than we did when I was playing. As a parent, this has made me think much more deeply about whether or not I want to promote playing football to my son. Kids cannot be solely responsible for making decisions that could impact them negatively for the rest of their lives. I thought I understood the risks of smoking cigarettes when I was younger. Newsflash: I was not as smart or informed as I thought I was. If I want to make the decision to light up a cigarette or play football as an adult, that is my prerogative.

I totally agree that we, as a society, are turning our kids into giant wussies. I have no intention of knowingly contributing to that trend. But, at the same time, I will not consciously push kids into activities that put them in harms way. That is called being open minded and responsible.

When I was a kid, my parents did not make me buckle up in the back of the car. It wasn't because they didn't care about me. It wasn't because they were retaliating against the "Wussification of America", It was because nobody really knew any better. We do know better now, and that is why we buckle our kids up. Furthermore, there are still parents that don't make the decision to do that on their own. That is why there are now laws regulating that.

I am hopeful that it does not get to the point where football is totally removed from public schools. In a perfect situation, there will be new rules and equipment developed to drastically minimize the risks involved. Until then, I will try to stay as informed on the situation as possible so my wife and I can make the best decision for our son...

Those same doctors are concluding that women's soccer is more dangerous in that the incidents of concussions are more frequent and the impact pf a soccer ball to an unprotected head occurs at a much higher velocity. That is why the relevant soccer organizations (I don't know official name - I really don't like the sport) have recently mandated that heading the ball will be illegal leading up to (I think) college level soccer.
