MN is lucky there is bowl revenue sharing!

But I guess it is Detroit we are talking about.

Does this sound like a great bowl destination and atmosphere when you consider the following?

* Minnesota sold just 1,400 tickets!

* The Quick Lane Bowl announced attendance was 34,217 but the crowd looked much smaller with the upper deck closed.

* Central Michigan had more fans but some of them might have been deterred by the ICE STORM that hit Detroit.

* Head Coach Tracey Claeys got a bucket of water dumped on him (SERIOUSLY?!?) as Minnesota closed out the game, winning 21-14.

* Minnesota finished their losing season at 6-7.

These outright lies on "attendance" are getting old. If there were 10,000 people in the building, I'd be surprised.

This is exactly why i decided not to go to the rose bowl: i have the money but don't want to blow it. People are frugal economy real bad. Too many bowls. Possibility of me getting mad at iowa play calls. Not a good investment of money. Can watch it here. I think stanford wins. I am not thrilled with college football and the all alabama all the time thingy

I have no problem with dumping water on him. They've had a tough year, and nobody has to tell them they are 6-7. They know it. Who knows how any program would have done given those circumstances.

Makes me wonder if the count the number of tickets the colleges bought, but didn't sell.

They do. And the free one they give away to disadvantaged kids. But, it's hard to get to Ford field when you're disadvantaged and an ice storm comes barreling through.

why did the B1G ever enter into a bowl agreement with Detroit?

Did they feel obligated because of Michigan and Michigan State?

Didn't we have a really low attendance last year? If we were in Minny's shoes this year, we'd have a similar turnout or worse.

Minnesota and Northwestern have about the same fan following. Both areas have pro teams in football, basketball, and hockey. Many times their college teams r a secondary ticket compared to the pro teams. I have gone to Gopher games where there were more Hawk fans than Minnesota fans. Their new stadium seats around 50 thousand, not a big statement of a program with big fan support. So not too surprised if fan following at a minor bowl game is small.

Cause despite the narrative Detroit as a couple day getaway isn't the world worst location. And the idea is that fans of a 6-6 team are more likely to drive a few hours to a game instead of shelling out a grand plus to go to Birmingham or St. Petersburg to see their blah team.

Wow, none of those things apply to the Rose Bowl nor our matchup.

This. It ain't a great bowl and the matchup this year was even worse, but as a lower-tier bowl it isn't bad. Big city, indoor stadium, nearby for many schools.

Wow, it is all about you!

I am guesding that when they committed to spending money on the stadium they had to have the guarantee of a bowl as well as maybe some amount of superbowls

lots of empty seats;

Initially because former sparty coach George Perles was on the bowl's executive committee.

I don't know why it continues.

I'm not sure I've ever seen such a display of tortured logic before. I'm struggling to understand why someone wouldn't go to the Rose Bowl because there are too many other bowls. Or because of Alabama. That's classic stuff right there. There's actually only one reason given that makes any sense at all: you don't want to spend the money - which is perfectly fine. Just leave it at that. ALL the rest is pure nonsense.

Why exactly did you decide to not go to the Rose Bowl? because there are too many bowls? Because Minny only sold 1,400 tickets? Because you might get mad at play calls? Not thrilled with college football? weird post is weird.

So does Wisconsin.

Hope you have a better day today. That one was kind of negative. :D

It was a Monday game in Detroit. Not sure it has ever been a tough ticket. Plus, the way it went down I am not even sure Minnesota fans knew there was a game. I think seniors had cleaned out their lockers and coaches had been fired by the time they announced they were in a bowl. I assume if Iowa was ever to fall to that game I would go... ironically like a hipster douche.

well, just being very frank as to why I was not going. I really wanted to. but I was also trying to tie it all in with why people in general might not go to bowls in general. sorry it's so negative. I would be not really positive about a 5-7 team in a bowl, but good for all those teams who won. but it doesn't mean much if you think about it.

I don't believe this was a Big Ten bowl. Minnesota was the next NCAA school on the list with a losing record to fill an open bowl slot.

It has big ten ties, maybe not every time but certainly there's talk of a big ten team every year in it

There's some real potential there, actually. Despite the potential for lousy weather, Detroit is a heck of a convention city, and it would be really interesting to see what would happen if this actually became a mid-upper-level type bowl (Say Big Ten #4 vs. Pac-12 or SEC #4). I'm pretty sure the Michigan-Florida matchup this year would draw just as many to Detroit as it will to Orlando this year, maybe more).

But if this stays a Big Ten #9 vs. ACC #9/MAC, it will remain a joke.

If the sport isn't played on ice... Gopher fans likely don't care. They have been, and always will be, an embarrassment to the B1G. I'm not saying they have the most scandals in the B1G, but I'm not sure who would have more.

The entire Athletic Dept. is a mess. After the latest sex scandal, I don't even think they have hired an AD yet.

So they dumped a bucket of water on Tracy Clays? Isn't that a bit like going to paint the White House with a pint of white paint? Does he know he got wet? Sorry, but the dude's really fat. Hope I didn't offend anyone there.

Minnesota is a big public university- pumping out what? 20K alum a year? Northwestern probably pumps out 1/4 of that
