P.J. Fleck deserves a chance - and ridicule
By Patrick Reusse

DECEMBER 2, 2017 — 5:51PM

Phillip John Fleck was introduced as Gophers football coach on Jan. 6, 2017. As an aside in his rapid-fire remarks, Fleck admitted that he was “not for everybody” with his over-the-top style of salesmanship.

Some of us cringed at the barrage of buzzwords and phrases, and silly acronyms, and fell into the “not for everybody” group. When this was followed later by Fleck’s tributes to his wonderfulness and then relentless excuse-making, that group seemed to become larger.

Those that found themselves in this group — one that Fleck acknowledged would exist during his first cascade of words as Gophers coach — soon were accused of being “haters,” followed by this addendum:

“You have to give him more than one year.”

There’s the true overreaction in the aftermath of Fleck’s first season: Anyone pointing out the failure of 5-7 or making light of the inconsistencies in those word cascades therefore wants Fleck to be the Gophers’ second straight one-and-done as a full-time football coach.

No one of right mind is even hinting at this. We all understand Fleck gets four years, minimum. We also understand no Gophers football coach has walked into the advantages that bless him:

* Opulent football facilities opening in January
* An academic system at the U that now emphasizes generous grading, and
* Being located in the Big Ten West.

Unless Fleck’s all bluster and no substance, he should win more consistently than the nine coaches that have preceded him dating to 1972.

The 2017 season still deserves to be judged. Large publicity was offered in advance. Tickets were sold (although not in numbers imagined).

It was a season of football, all being precious to some, and it ended with a coach sending his team to face the ancient rival (Wisconsin) with this motivation: Not to throw caution to the November winds in the search for a monumental upset; instead, with tactics that implied, “Let’s get out there and do everything we can to hold down the score, boys.”

Ridiculing Fleck for that did not make anyone a “hater,” or serve as a call for him to be fired after one year. It was simply ridicule that was deserved.

Someone in the know, tell me more about this generous grading. I could have used some of that in college when I was sitting in the meaty middle of the Bell Curve.
I found that part, very interesting as well. As if Minny hasn't bent the rules enough in the last decade or so, I guess its time to see how far they can push the envelope in the name of a few more wins. Why am I not suprized?

Of all the items this also caught my attention the most...... GENEROUS GRADING!

Well this must mean they have brought in administration from North Carolina athletics to implement this newly approved NCAA academic program.

9 coaches in 45 years. I guess Minny continues to demand excellence, no matter how many decades of coach searching is necessary.
So you'd rather have Minnesota's results from the last 45 years than than Iowa's?

You need all the talent and generous grades you can get to overcome the boat rower. Good luck with that.

Just trying to reach the legendary 4-5 level

by the way, these guys are huge......we need a bigger boat!

Faalele is a very bad football player right now, but does have a very high ceiling. I’d bet the farm that Dunlap is closer to Faalele’s listed weight than his own listed weight

I am not a Gopher fan by any means but they did land two 4 star kids from a very good program? So why do you say he is not a very good player how can they be a 4 star and not be very good?

Measurables mean a lot to Rivals along with, as you mentioned, quality of competition. Neither of these recruits suit a zone blocking scheme from what I can see, but that does not mean they don’t have a fit somewhere. They are big guys who have forward momentum and size, but may be susceptible to speed, lateral movements, and less likely to work in a pull/trap scenario. Spread offenses where getting the ball out early may be a fit, but play-action doesn’t appear to be their thing.

I learned all of this by watching each of their highlights once. Take it with a grain ;)

Check out the video of Faalele and tell me your thoughts. He looks like more of a developmental prospect to me who may benefit from a Wisconsin or Iowa type program, but neither offered. He also doesn’t appear to have a big motor or killer mentality, IMHO.

It’s his first year ever playing football, so he has poor technique. He is years away from being able to handle B1G edge rushers. He’s a 4 star because he has first round upside with his size and athleticism

6’9” & 390 lbs?!!

40 time of 17 minutes at McDonalds. :p

He is a developmental player as he has not played for long. Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, USC and about 20 others felt they could develop him.

It sucks to be us, because we have marginal talent at best and when we get two 4 star lineman with loads of potential......we still picked the wrong guys(LOL)

We do have one of the best OL coaches in college football in Warriner. If you need a coach to get the most out of his players, Warriner is not a bad one to do it.

Kind of reminds me of that huge DL (I think) who kept committing and de-committing to Iowa and other schools. I think Kirk pulled his offer. Kid was huge, but not sure what ever happened to him.

I doubt he would ever have played much at Iowa. Kinda of a bigger version of Carl Davis. Took several years to get big Carl down to a good playing weight, and for him to play hard on the majority of snaps. While the staff like big guys, they want them to be able to move, and to play with a high motor.

He played at Indiana this year. May have stared.

Think you talking about Juan Harris? We were looking at him too, ended up signing with Indiana.

They grade their own papers. That's what he is referencing. A new grading scale where students grade themselves on their effort and what they think they should get. It's not in every class just some..

Back to these commits!

Is baby Ferentz ok with how Fleck got them? That's all that really matters here.

WHICH IS IT?!?! LOLOL LOL.. ONE POSTER SAYS THIS ONE POSTER SAYS THAT! SO WHICH IS IT IOWA FAN BASE!?! LOL

WHICH IS IT?!?! LOLOL LOL.. ONE POSTER SAYS THIS ONE POSTER SAYS THAT! SO WHICH IS IT IOWA FAN BASE!?! LOL

If one picks one, trust me, not one Iowa fan will disagree or comment. If someone does disagree, not one of them will have the balls to post it.

Lol but Iowa is 4-5 not 7-5 according to you? WHICH IS IT LOL!?! Which one!? Can't make this stuff up!!

Sir, our only goal is to catch Iowa. To finish ahead of you, that would have been 4-5

You do understand that Fleck and the gopher fan base have only one goal, and thats to catch Iowa. If you finish 2-7, and we go 3-6, our season was a massive success.

Are you dense or something?
