Name 3 most terrible chain restaurants

Applebee’s-combination of their craptacular food, ugly wait staff, and poverty stricken customers

Subway - Gross food and yet the same price as other sandwich chains who are all better. No idea how it’s a thing still after the next generation of sub shops.

Red Lobster - Way overpriced for the terrible frozen seafood they lather in butter to try to hide the microwave prepped taste. The trash you see from appplebees goes here for the special occasions
How in the world is Red Lobster overpriced, back when I was poor we went there because it was cheap. Not saying it's good, but it was cheap.

IHOP
Perkins
Applebee's are 3 places I would never go to again. All are horrible.

At this point in our lives we never go to a chain restaurant though unless we have no other options. It's so much better to eat at decent places where the owners seem to give a shit about good food and service.

That does not make sense unless you were ordering from the kids menu and there for the cheddar biscuits. Dead Lobster has always been on the higher price size for standard food chains. A quick glance of menu here in Tallahassee shows most entrees 20-45 buck range, a few in high teens. Appetizers 11-15 Burgers 12…. It’s not cheap and it’s not near good enough for those prices, especially on the gulf coast. It’s like fine dining as imagined by someone living in a trailer.

You're right it is not good, but it's cheap unless you're dirt poor. Here's their website, the first add is 15 dishes under $20. If that's not cheap I don't know what is. Dollar menu's I guess?

I don’t know man, I think you might be in a very small minority of folks who think of Red Lobster as a cheap food chain. Glad we agree on taste!

I don't think Domino's is good and have have never ordered it myself, but among pizza I've been "stuck" with at some function or party, I think they're far from worst. To me Papa Johns and Pizza Hut and Little Caesars are much worse. I'll slug down a slice of Domino's at a party or something if I'm hungry, but won't touch those others. Of course, it's been maybe twice in ten years that I've tasted a slice of Domino's and 25 years since I've had Papa Johns, so I don't know if that's representative.

To me the worst that I've tried, and won't eat again under any circumstances are

Buffalo Wild Wings
Subway
TGI Fridays

Anything in the Ruby Tuesday/TGIF category.

I think Panera has gone downhill the last few years.

Subway is hit or miss, depending on the particular location.

Does anyone still go to Arby’s? We used to go every month or so in the 70s but in the last 10 years or so I don’t think I’ve driven by one and seen more than one or two cars in the lot.

i agree with panera. And overpriced for crappy food

Since I live in a prime spot for good, fresh seafood, there's never a reason to go to Red Lobster. Since I try to avoid white carbs, there's no appeal to me for their biscuits, and even if I wanted a good biscuit I wouldn't go to Red Lobster.

Is Red Lobster terrible? I don't think so, but the few times I've been there it was overpriced. Of course that was in Atlanta and NC.

When I was in high school, a piece of pepperoni from Sbaroo at West Dale mall was amazing, washing it down with my orange julius!!
Notice I didn't actually hate on Sbarro. I am 47 and growing up hanging out at the mall, there was little better than the triple crown of a slice of sbarro, an orange julius, and a hot soft pretzel.

Each location of anything is hit or miss based on management. Seems to be getting worse.

places I don’t go to that I use to are….

Olive Garden (my favorite part was the unlimited bread sticks and salad) and I think it’s pricing is crazy now. My wife makes a homemade sauce that kills it so there is no point.

Subway. I like subs but I will hold out for a Jimmy Johns or better.

any chain Steak place. Cooking steak is easy as home and cheaper.

Sonic’s drinks and shakes are probably enough to keep them off this list, but their food is awful.

Another suggestion would be Dave and Busters. Down right the worst food Ive had in a restaurant, but their arcade probably keeps them from this list too.

Arbys double meat french dip is fiyah. And on the app you can add extra toppings

Every few months I get Firehouse or Jersey Mikes. Then I forget what it was like and confuse the two and a few months later try again. Neither option has inspiring food. Very un original. At least Jimmy Johns has a distinct brand and sandwich. Similarly, all the toasted sub restaurants are equally as unoriginal, eg PotBellys, WichWhich, Quiznos, Picklemans

Pepperjax is overpriced and bland

Waffle House is hit or miss

Oliv Garden aint that bad. For a simple lunch of soup salad and breadsticks, you know what you’re getting. Good for a basic lunch. But even foe dinner if you just want a simple pasta meal, its okay.

Maggianos, Cheesecake Factory, Buca, Bonefish, PJ Changs are all overpriced because they are overhyped

Chipotle. $10 for a steak quesadilla. When hell freezes over

My only visit to PepperJax ( the subway of cheesesteak) the guy cooking the meat was sweating like a pig. I told the people I was with if one drop of sweat hits the grill I am going to lose my mind.

never went back.

I like the concept but they need to air condition the hell out of those types of places for the workers.

About once a week for a jamocha shake.

Subway
Papa John’s
Panda Express

I see IHOP getting mentioned here and I agree. Did anyone else have a bunch close down permanently due to Covid? Albuquerque had like 6 or 7 shut the doors and has only three left.

I’m definitely not a fan of IHOP the past five to ten years or so. There’s nothing “international” about it anymore other than the Swedish crepes, all other international dishes were ditched (other than emphasizing things like “French” in French Toast which actually came from Henry the 5th’s Court when to French something meant slice so it’s essentially “Sliced Toast” and it’s just a slightly jumped up version of “lost bread” which dates back to the Roman Empire). I miss when they actually had a lot of legitimate international dishes.

So I don’t purposefully go there on my own. But when drug there by colleagues and friends, it’s not a terrible experience. Just one that’s no better and probably a little worse than Waffle House or Village Inn.
How dare you lump Village Inn in with Waffle House and IHOP. How dare you, sir.

The Santa Fe Chicken Skillet is fantabulous.

Jersey Mike’s LOOKS like a great sub with its stacks of deli meat. And they definitely give you a lot of meat. But it’s very bland, Subwayesque meat. Somehow Jimmy John’s which notoriously is skimpy with the meat and probably has a third of the overall deli meat has twice or three times the flavor as the overloaded Jersey Mike’s subs. I really WANT to like Jersey Mike’s....but it’s just too bland for me. Firehouse and Publix subs easily dominate Jersey Mike’s in flavor and even Jimmy John’s and Wawa’s does as well. Jersey Mike’s is essentially Subway’s meats stacked super thick.

The other place I’ve never had so I can’t comment.
You would like Capriotti’s. They used legit, shredded oven-roasted chicken on their subs. It’s my favorite sub shop.

The amount of butter they put on their seafood melts my insides. It's worse than Taco Bell. Guaranteed blowout within the hour. Haven't been to a Red Lobster in over a decade.

Snob thread

I agree when it comes to Red Lobster.

Is it great seafood? Of course not. But it's almost always perfectly fine, and 80% of the country lives in a place where you can't get "good" seafood for less than twice the price. No, I don't expect someone to go to Red Lobster if they live on the beach, but for the rest of the country, especially if you're middle class or lower, Red Lobster is literally the only way to experience that kind of seafood, and they deliver an acceptable quality of that food to people that otherwise wouldn't get it.

I have no problem ragging a lot of restaurants, but for some reason the Red Lobster hate bristles me. It's not lik going to Olive Garden when there are almost always independent Italian restaurants offering better for the same price. Nobody else is doing what Red Lobster is doing better than them.

BWW
Panda Express
Taco Bell
We ate at BWW here in KC last weekend because I was craving their caribbean jerk sauce. The food was passable, and I use that word generously, but the service was god awful and the place was an absolute dump. Our 5 year old wanted to play a video game so I stood there with her. I went to move my one foot and my shoe was stuck to the carpet. Talk about going WAY down hill. Yikes.

Subway - thanks for the bread sammich
Burger King - better name is booger sling
Arby's - despite the fact that I still like their basic roast beef sammich, all of their other shit seems to be over the top with a bunch of stupid sauces running out of them. No thanks.

Has anyone tried WingStop?

Based on the ads, I wasn’t sure if white people were welcome there 😉

McDonalds is still the standard bearer for low quality when there's nothing else around and I would never ever go there if it weren't for my kids.

Subway is also incredible for their resiliency, and they have something remarkably bulletproof about their business model. I don't think I've ever seen one busy, and basically every sub place is better than they are.

I'd have to put Pizza Hut and Papa Johns slightly below Dominos.

I don't get much of the hate for the sit-down chain restaurants (Applebees, Red Lobster, etc). You're not going to get blown away by the gourmet quality, but it's never really complete dog food or a atrociously disgusting place either since they are held accountable by the corporate structure. I think all of the outright horrible, ghastly dining experiences I've ever had have been mom & pop places. Obviously the best restaurants in town are going to be the little guys as well, it just depends on the place. The chains simply serve the (large) niche of predictability, where you know taking a group to one isn't going to upset any of them.

I haven't had it. There are multiple locations here in KC and only one of them are in a whitey less welcoming neighborhood.
