National Duals Announcement Thread

Great Matchup. Stoll and Rhoades get smoked-no harm...Brooks can beat Renda again and that should help him come nationals. Brody has a huge opportunity in front of him and we can really see where is. Jack has been pretty darn consistent and is a big 41 pounder like Brody. We should also be able to gauge Coopers progress in the absolutely loaded 157.
NC State.

Iowa 21-Gilman,Clark,Sorensen all major. Meyer,Burak,Brooks win by dec.

NC State 14- Jack and Gantt win by dec. Rohskopf and Gwiz win by major.

Gilman Fall Fausz 6-0
Clark MD Morris 10-0
Jack Dec Grothus 10-3
Sorenson Dec Melikian 13-3
Gantt Dec Cooper 13-6
Rohskopf MD Rhoads 13-10
Meyer Dec Hall 16-10
Brooks Dec Renda 19-10
Burak Dec Boykin 22-10
Gwiz MD Stoll 22-14

Iowa: 22

Gantt majored Coop at Midlands. By the end of the match Coop looked like he wanted no part of Gant. Hopefully, he's gained more confidence and will put up more of a fight in CHA. It will be a big test for him.

Watched the first part of NU and NCSU last night.
184 - Renda gave Dudley a good match but Dudley was too much on the mat. Sammy will have to be smart on his feet and then own him on the mat.
197 - Show up and wrestle and we'll be fine here.
125 - Fausz was better than I expected. He had a good motor and scrambled well but he was wrestling Lambert. I don't really think much of Lambert. I don't see a fall here.
133 - Lots of scrambling but no gas tank. If Clark wrestles like he has been he could break this kid by the 2nd period.
141 - We'll know a lot more about our 141 situation after this match. Any issues with strength or mat awareness will be exposed by Jack. He's solid.

FYI, Brooks did wrestle Renda at Midlands.

I just don't see this dual as exciting in any way, shape or form. I know nothing is for certain, but this dual should go chalk. Meaning, everyone expected to win should and 141 and 184 are the only 2 weights where the favorite may have to sweat it out a bit. Gilman, Clark, Sorenson, Gantt, Rohskopf, Meyer, Burak and Gwiz will all win by very comfortable margins. Even Jack and Brooks should win their matches without there being much doubt.

Honestly, the only match I will be looking forward to is 141. This is the match to truly tell us all where Brody is at. A close match, let alone a win, would let us know he is at least ready to make a podium run. It sucks they don't have VTech, because we could still learn the same with his match with Chisko and get a bunch more competitive match ups....................................

Hwt could be good. Not predicting a Stoll win, but he's improved and this match will be interesting.

I would have rather watched us wrestle VT as well. That being said, their crybaby fans in Twitter saying that Brands was scared to wrestle them are fools. It is obvious that the matchups were determined based on rankings. The coaches ranked NC St ahead of VT so Iowa wrestles NC St. Simple as that.

I'd of rather seen VTech or Mizzou since NCST were at midlands. Nebby already having met NCST might have had something to do with it.

As has been previously stated us vs NCST is a lot of matches with clear favorites. We should win at 125,133, 149, 174 and 197. They are clear favorites at 141, 157, 165, and 285. Brooks won close vs Renda last time. I'd like to see him expand that, he needs to win the rematch to avoid hurting his seed. Hopefully our underdogs can get after it. Cooper got torn to shreds at midlands. Gwiz handled Sam pretty good.

A lot of wrestlers this year have given Meyer a close match. Seems to be a trend at 174 past couple years!

Cause Brands picked NC St?? They are obviously clueless and can talk big because it's not happening. I would like to take them out after last week when they jumped us in the tournament rankings on Intermat. Granted Iowa does not get a fair shake on there (F*** Folly bag guy) they go by shear pts projected not taking bonus points into consideration. I get this doesn't matter in the whole scheme of things, but it would be like Hawkeye Football getting to the playoffs over Michigan St. this year. It wasn't a month or more ago it was just this weekend, which brings me to a final question.... Did they poll the coaches after this weekend then, or go by the previous ranks? I would have to say V-tech would move up if polled, and if going by previous rankings they prob wouldn't have waited. I have to think the committee just tossed it together and said it doesn't really matter, since only the national championship means anything for a title. Maybe adopt what College football is doing and have four teams make the playoffs, or a big ten championship match ....

This whole thing is an absolute joke. Might as well just announce it as exhibition matches. There's no true dual champion Thst comes out of this bullshit. If you're not gonna structure it as a dual tournament over a weekend getting the 8 best teams in one location and wrestling it out, then don't do it at all in my opinion. The fact that Iowa will go undefeated for the season in duals but perv state will be claiming a mythical national championship is a farce. The whole thing is stupid and complete mismanagement by the NCAA.

This is an NWCA event, not an NCAA event.

Not really a fan of the format, timing, organization, location, etc. I am looking forward to 141 / 157 to see what Grothus / Cooper can do. Also, think we can gauge Stollhouse's progress.

I am quite frankly surprised that more teams didn't respectfully decline in order to prevent injuries / avoid crazy travel. Sounds like OkSt is headed up to Happy Valley w/o Crutch (may be done for season) and Jojo. Teams have backed out for a lot less. (MikeT, I just said something nice about OkSt and, yes, I did just throw up a little bit in my mouth).

There might be a cold one in the frig that can help you rinse your mouth out and help you forget........might take several to forget though.

Tom Ryan was on Flo today when they announced the match ups. I could have swore that he alluded to the fact that only 10 coaches actually voted on the rankings. Maybe Willie or CP can clarify that.

Looks like Iowa state jumped Oklahoma and UNC for a wildcard.

Indiana jumped Illinois.

If it were completely scratch by rankings (putting higher ranked wildcards above lower ranked conf champs) it would have been:

PSU vs Ok St
Iowa vs NC St
Mich vs VTU
Ohio St vs Mizz
Neb vs Lehigh
Illini vs Oklahoma
Rutgers vs Edinboro
Minn vs App St

Read somewhere Illinois declined, due to scheduling conflict or something.... although nothing on their schedule that I see. Maybe the gym was scheduled for one of the days and it gave them a good excuse. I think another irrelevant Big 10 team declined.

I'm not quite as down on the whole thing as you are, but it does seem like an awful lot of input for not a lot of output. Labeling it as a "national championship dual series" belittles everyone's intelligence. It's just a bunch of interesting duals between B10 teams and out-of-conference teams that you don't see year in, year out. Does it marginally increase the sport's exposure? Sure. And for that reason, I think it's a net gain, notwithstanding the misguided marketing strategy and the absurd title. If the powers that be wanted to do this again next year, I'd drop the title and schedule the matches for earlier in the season. And . . . if you want to grow the sport, please schedule Iowa against PSU. Can't afford too many missed opportunities. The folks running women's college BB knew that it was important to schedule UConn/Tennessee and UConn/Notre Dame year after year. We need to do the same thing here.

Call it what you want, I don't care. All I know is, I get to go to Carver one more time this year against an interesting opponent. I'll be there.

I will be there as well ONLY to see the Hawks wrestle at Carver one more time. It would be nice if I could have put a disclaimer on my ticket purchase indicating that I am supporting Iowa wrestling NOT the NWCA duals.

Did not buy tix for this, had season and BIG tickets may have gone if on Saturday.

Whether you agree with the timing, NWCA, or opponent, I would encourage everyone to buy a ticket and come to the dual meet. We have an opportunity to reach 100k fans in Iowa City this year for dual meets which is pretty darn impressive. Not only good for our program and student/athletes but also to once again prove we have the best fans in the country.

Thanks in advance and would love to see a packed house on Monday!

Thanks Ping. And to think this site was once called a "dumpster fire." Wrong analogy!

I have to stop now, Kwood just sent me a "cease and desist order" or "infringement letter" and my lawyer advises me to stop.
