An Iowa national park ranger who went viral with a social media post about being one of thousands of probationary federal workers included in a massive Department of Government Efficiency-led layoff on Valentine's Day says he has had his job reinstated.
Effigy Mounds National Monument ranger Brian Gibbs, announcing the news in another Facebook post, said he'll be back in uniform on Monday, helping educate visitors about the Native American culture that built the site's 200 mounds long before European settlement in what is now northeast Iowa.
"My unlawful termination has been rescinded," Gibbs said in the post. "I am excited to return to my dream job as a National Park Service Ranger next week. I look forward to hopping right back into the classrooms (on Monday!) and leading dozens of field trips at the park this year."
He was one of around 1,000 National Park Services workers to lose their jobs in the DOGE job reductions that laid-off workers dubbed the "Valentine's Day massacre." Another ranger at Effigy Mounds also was laid off, Gibbs previously told the Des Moines Register.
He declined to comment Saturday on his social media post, citing his newly reinstated position.
