First Four Games only saw 1 team from what I'd consider to be the "Power 5" conferences in men's college basketball: Michigan. While the SEC is definitely a "Power 5" in football, it is not a "Power 5" in basketball. Vanderbilt only solidified my opinion on Tuesday night.

Thursday's Games:
The ACC (0-0) has four of its seven teams playing today: Duke (4); Virginia (1); Miami (3); North Carolina (1).
The Big 12 (0-0) has four of its seven teams playing today: Texas Tech (8); Iowa State (4); Baylor (5); Kansas (1).
The Pac 12 (0-0) has four of its seven teams playing today: Colorado (8); Utah (3); Arizona (6); USC (8).
The Big East (0-0) has three of its five teams playing today: Butler (9); Seton Hall (6); Providence (9).
The B1G (1-0) has two of its seven teams playing today: Purdue (5); Indiana (5).

No real chances for Power 5 Conference teams to acheive upset victories today; only opportunities to be upset.

Let the games begin (Go UNC Wilmington)!

The SEC is definitely slacking but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if both Kentucky and Texas A&M are in the final four. Love this time of year!

SEC might be a bit down this year, but leaving them out of your "Power 5" because of that is rather pretentious, especially for a Big Ten BB fan. Since Michigan State's championship in 2000 (i.e. - this century), the Big Ten has had 12 Final Four appearances and no champs, while the SEC has had 9 Final Fours and 3 champs, and going back another 10 years tips the scale heavily in favor of the SEC.

So, if you're going to do this thread, and include the Big East, do it right and include the SEC.

The term "power 5" is for football.. In basketball it's really 6-7 big east is a legit top conference and the American is making a push it helps they have uconn and cincy.

I'm not analyzing the history of the NCAA tournament since 2000. Never claimed to be doing that.

I'm looking at this year's results, tracking this year's tournament and included the five conferences which have the most teams invited. 70% of the Big 12 teams were invited to the tournament. 50% of the ACC, Pac 12, Big East and B1G were invited to the tournament this year. Barely 20% of the SEC was invited. By my view of things, the SEC doesn't fit as a "Power 5 Conference" this year.

At the end of your post, you wrote "if you are going to be doing this thread, and include the Big East, do it right and include the SEC." You issue demands and orders on an internet message board and accuse me of being pretentious? Pot meet kettle.

If you are offended by it, start your own g.d. thread.

Sorry. Just trying to make you not look like a douche. Too late.

I've read "Power 5" used when referencing Pac 12, B1G, Big 12, ACC and SEC in basketball as well. Here's an example: http://www.campusrush.com/south-carolina-gamecocks-basketball-ncaa-tournament-snub-1662201494.html
I understand but those writers are discrediting what the big east is in basketball they are just as good as any other conference.. The fact South Carolina got left out is pathetic and teams like Texas tech and Michigan got in.. I thought it use to be win 20 games and member of major conference you will get into the ncaa..

Through Thursday:
ACC (4-0)
Big East (2-1)
B1G (2-1)
Big 12 (2-2)
Pac 12 (1-3)

Biggest upsets hit B1G and the Big 12 with Purdue and Baylor bowing out in the much-dreaded #5 v. #12 game.

South Carolina's SOS killed them as did its performance in the last few weeks of the season. Losing to a #222 RPI Mississippi State at a crucial time of the year likely played a big factor. Not saying "right" or "wrong," just saying.

Iowa's basketball budget is $6.8 mill per year.

That would rank you in the Big East at

St. John's $10.5
Georgetown $10.3
Marquette $9.1
DePaul $9.1
Villanova $8.1
Providence $7.3
Seton Hall $6.8
Iowa $6.8
Creighton $6.5
Xavier $5.5
Butler $4.5

Big east teams have plenty of revenue. For basketball they make as much as any of the football schools. They have a huge TV contract and attendance numbers are good.

Budget is probably not the way to measure teams considering DePaul gets about 1200 fans to their games. Maybe revenue.
