NCAA Quarterfinals Thread

5-6 years of wrestling and so many guys are either injured or burnt out. Gonna miss em, but it's looks like it's time for the next wave of kids to develop.
Watch out, I suggested that in multiple post and was told by most they'd have these seniors wrestle another 10 years if they could.

Iowa is faced, or was faced, with the dilemma of experienced, but injured veterans vs young and hungry new guys.

Guess we turn the page and cheer the newbies next season.

I am excited to watch Cass and Murin next season.

One thing is obviously clear, Brands and his staff need to adjust their philosophy. Outside of a few wrestlers (Lee, DeSanto and Cass) the majority of the lineup is too content to just tie up and get one TD. Brands talks and emphasizes scoring and being the aggressor but that’s not showing up on the mat. So many times the Hawks should have dominated against a lesser opponent but yet barely win. Something has to change.

Agreed.

We also seem to be injured and limping into NCAA’s every year. And most of the injuries certainly appear to be happening between meets. Which makes me question our training.

While this years NCAA’s is a major disappointment the Hawks just won the Natty last year. Injuries certainly had an impact but again something needs to change as what Brands preaches isn’t occurring on the mat. It’s not just one guy so it makes you certainly question what are they doing in practice. Heck all too often guys will ride someone for 3-4 minutes for one point.

not that I’m not questioning everything right now but kemerer was hurt in practice, cass, eierman and lee were hurt in matches, and not sure about ayala or brands.

How we all feeling about that contract extension?
Let's be clear, INJURIES are playing a HUGE part in why Iowa isn't in the lead right now. Acting like this is some coaching underperformance is HILARIOUS.

If Lee were wrestling they would STILL be right at the top.

125: Lee would be in the semis
133: DeSanto is in the semis
141: Eierman is 2-1 so far with 1 leg and a missing knee that usually scores him points in bunches in scrambles.
149: Murin is in the R12 and wrestling AWESOME.
157: Young is 2-1 and with a major decision win. Carr is going to be a brutal draw, but he hasn't wrestled well this tournament.
165: Marinelli is Marinelli. He just doesn't have go to offense from the ties, but he should still AA and get a rematch with Kharchla to move up past the 7th place match.
174: Kemerer has NO upper body strength due to injury. Still he should AA.
184: Assad hasn't developed and will probably go 1-2. But, if your ONE and ONLY hole is a 1-2 guy you are doing better than EVERY other top team that didn't even qualify all 10.
197: Warner has a very good chance to make the semis.
285: Cass is LIMPING and may still finish top 4!

Considering Lee, Ayala, Eierman, Kemerer and Cass all have SUBSTANTIAL injuries, this is a gutsy performance that deserves more praise than many on here are giving...

the newbies aren’t very good to be frank. they would not have been improvements and will likely be downgrades next year.

questions need to be answered about the last 10 years and the future. more of the same is not the answer. it’s been 12 years since this team performed to expectations.

Eierman and Kemerer, the two oldest Hawkeyes, lost to Kizhan Clarke and Hayden Hidlay, who are both also in their sixth years. Both have been dealing with injuries, yes, but not necessarily always losing to young and hungry.

Is anyone satisfied with the way this year has gone? No, certainly not Tom or Terry. Are there things that could be done differently? Sure, but we have to remember that any serious changes regarding strength and conditioning would have to get approval from the higher-ups. There may changes that Tom would be willing to try that Barta and the University might not allow. The shadow of Chris Doyle doesn't just impact the football program.

injuries are part of the evaluation. it speaks to training methods and quality of strength and conditioning. we have a pretty extensive list of guys who broke down and regressed at the end of their careers under this staff.

This offseason, the most important thing the Hawks can do is take a hard look at their Strength and Conditioning program. It should just be more than lifting and working out, it should focus on nutrition, flexibility, and recovery cycles. Half our guys have injuries from last season. How do you expect to get to March if you are banged up in November?

PSU, Michigan, ASU, and NC State are all going to finish ahead of us I'm guessing. What is alarming is they all beat us in almost if not every single head to head match so far. That is a sobering statistic.
These teams are winning matches by making their breaks not being nervous Nellies. Hand fighting and set ups without shots is not winning wrestling. The variety of shots displayed by pretty much the entire lineup is poor and crap scramble ability too. Opening up scoring ability needs to be top focus.

The ‘I only watch in March’ crowd doesn’t care about that.

I don’t see the culture changing next year, It’s hard to believe tnt are teaching such tentative wrestling.
125 sure Lee murders ppl. 133 Cullen untested. 141/149 murin solid the other weight untested. 57 gaping hole. 65 solid. 74 brands ehh. 84 Assad so ya. 97 Warner so 3-1 wins. Hwt cass will wreck ppl.

Depends on whose expectations. 2020 and 2021 were great years. In 2018, we were predicted to finish 8th...finished third.
