From ESPN.com:

Nebraska appears down to one available quarterback on scholarship after Tristan Gebbia skipped practice on Monday and withdrew from the university.

Gebbia, a redshirt freshman from Calabasas, California, lost an offseason-long battle for the starting job to true freshman Adrian Martinez over the weekend.

Gebbia was an ESPN 300 signee in 2017 who threw for the second-most yards in California prep history.

The remaining Nebraska backup QBs are walk-on players:

* Walk-on sophomore Andrew Bunch has fared well in practice, according to coaches.

* Freshman Matt Masker joined the team in August as a walk-on.

Noah Vedral is ineligible to play this season as a transfer from UCF, where Frost and his entire staff coached the past two years.

I feel for this kid, someone hasn't done a very good job of teaching him you finish what you start. If he wants to transfer or stop playing football that's fine. Only it needs to be done after the season has ended.

I'm not sure i follow this. He was recruited to play for a different staff. He sat out a year, then the coaching staff was changed and the entire offensive system was altered, not the one he was recruited to. The best thing would probably have been to transfer in the summer, but he didn't do that for whatever reason. These players have 5 years of eligibility, and he already used one of his redshirting. He's behind a freshman on the depth chart, and doesn't see playing anytime soon. I just don't blame the players for going where they can play, when the coaches are free to move to a better job whenever they want or the school can fire the coach who recruited a player whenever they want. No one says the coaches or the schools have to "finish what they start."

Yes and maybe geb felt he had no shot because he wasn’t recruited by this staff. Combined with possibly sht talking between the two and this happens.

There are reasons to pile on Nebraska at times, but I don't think this is one of them. Think back to Ferentz' first season. The transition was tough. Players were jumping off the ship. You had one giving away his playbook. Some college kids are immature and not comfortable with change. I'm sure they'll fill their roster in the coming years with guys that will stick it out.

It’s very hard for some kids to leave home and go that far away and when things don’t turn out as planned it makes it that much harder on them.

I’m speaking from experience, my daughter has been gone for 3 weeks to college just 3 hours from home and she struggled mightily the first week and a half to the point where her mother and I didn’t think she would be able to do it. She’s rallied and is doing great but it is very difficult.

I find Nebraska football and their fans nauseating and really can’t stand them but can’t blame the kid for leaving. Best of luck to him.

Being from Omaha this is one I was interested to see how it played out with the "2CoC" returning to Lincoln. Gebbia was recruited to play a different style of offense so this doesn't shock me with what the "2CoC" wants to run.

I thought their ability to have a successful season with 2 QBs that have never played a down of college football let alone take a live snap in almost 2 years was razor thin, but now is even thinner.

For that matter the depth at QB in the West is very thin with the exception of Purdue in regards of 2 QBs that have any extended playing time.

I think the team from the West is going to need some divine intervention to be .500 this year..oh wait I forgot they have the 2nd Coming of Christ back in Lincoln. Nevermind, they will be Big Ten West Champions this year.

I don't follow Nebraska much, just like I don't follow other similar programs like them such as Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois, or Minnesota.

However, that said, my impression was they've been recruiting ok and just simply can't coach these players and/or they've gotten the wrong type of players for whatever system they've been running (constant coach turnover will do this).

I'm amazed they only have one scholarship QB though. Not that a walk on is the end of the world or anything, but it is highly likely an injury will happen at some time this year and they'll have a walk on QB on the field, which is simply amazing.

I bet if you told a Husker fan back in 1997 that they'd suck 20 years later and be down to possibly starting a walk on QB, they never would have believed you.

It’s happened quite a bit the past 5 years at Nebraska. Off the top of my head they have had a walk-on start probably 5 games because of injuries.

That is certainly a dangerous situation for their team. It seems similar to Minnesota.
The Nebraska freshman is definitely a good athlete and can run but that leaves him open to get injured.

Not a good situation for Nebraska since Frost's system features a running QB and the true freshman starter (Martinez) sat out all of 2017 with a serious shoulder injury. The back-up (Andrew Bunch) is a JUCO transfer with no other major college offers and fairly pedestrian passing stats. The health of Martinez will be top priority this year.

In addition to Gebbia, another highly regarded QB (Patrick O'Brien) transferred this Spring and last year's starter (Tanner Lee) declared early for the NFL draft. Gebbia was widely considered a better passer than Martinez. Nebraska has one of the best WR units in the B10. I'm guessing that Stanley Morgan might already regret his decision to return for his senior year and it could really get ugly if Martinez goes down at some point.

I don't really understand why the kid transferred. There is a good chance he would play this year and if you get the chance to play there is always a chance you could take the job. My only thought is that he just doesn't think the new system fits him at all.

That is my opinion also.

Martinez is talented, no doubt about that. However, he hasn't played in a game since 2016 (due to an injury) and there is no guarantee he will succeed at this level. QBs in Frost's system take a beating over the course of a season. Gebbia was one hamstring pull or ankle sprain away from taking the reigns.

Play it out this year then transfer if longer term prospects don't look promising.

Let me start with the fact that I don't agree with his decision. I wish he would have either decided to transfer in the spring or any time leading up to fall camp. But once fall camp starts, my opinion is that this is your team and you're committed to the season. If you want, transfer out after the season is over. But I wish him well.

With that being said, he transferred now because there are still some schools who haven't started yet, so he could use his "sit out" year as this fall if he gets to another school soon. Someone on the Husker site mentioned a number the California schools do not start class until later in September. So, if he transfers now, he has three years to play. If he waits until the season is over and then transfers, he has two years to play because he still has to sit out a year.

Agree with the last couple posts. Too many of these players transfer at the first sign of troubles, to their own detriment. He was the #2 QB at Nebraska, who knows if he'll be able to eventually win the job wherever he transfers to. Martinez could go down in the first quarter on Saturday, and Gebbia would suddenly have the job.

Also, if he chose to jump on Riley's sinking ship, I wouldn't trust him and his advisers to pick a better situation the second time around.

After watching Martinez in some of their spring game highlights, they better put him in bubble wrap because he wont make it 5 games. Looks like he is a run first guy with not a great arm.

This is work for these kids. Their career is on the clock. Leave now, join a new team that fits your style, sit this year and ready to play next. It is a professional decision. People who are crying about accountability probably have never had the opportunity to make a tough career decision.

No-one seems to be considering Noah Vedral in this equation. Not only is a freshman starting in front of Tristan Gebbia, but Vedral, who came from UCF with Frost, is waiting in the wings. Add the future style-based recruitment to the different style of offense Frost will run, and the handwriting was on the wall. Under the circumstances, it seems like he'd be a one-year stopgap QB after an injury, at the very most.

And unlike some above, I think it's the right time for Gebbia to transfer. He played through the camps believing he had a shot to win the position, so he could make a considered opinion. As the second-highest yardage passer in California history, he clearly believes he can start somewhere. So do I. Good luck to the kid.

I understand why they want to do it. I just think many do it impulsively when it isn't in their best interests.

I’m bummed about it. I remember watching Gebbia in his first spring game, and I was really impressed with his leadership as an 18 year old kid. I was hoping he’d win the job here. I wish him the best, and I’m pretty confident he’ll be in the mix to start where he goes. Wonder if he’ll think about Wash St? Goodness he’d toss it all over the yard there.

I think Wis has that sewn up but 2nd for sure.

While I agree about the comment about timing ... IF he was going to transfer, he definitely should have done it sooner. However, ultimately, good coaches can adapt systems to work to the strengths of their personnel. I personally revile Urban Meyer ... and yet look what he did at Florida with Chris Leak. Leak was one of Zooker's recruits ... and yet Urban shaped a winning O with Leak at the helm.

Given the talent that the Huskers have at WR ... a passing QB could still have success running a variant of what Frost wants to do on O.

Of course, given how the competition worked out - Gebbia didn't separate himself enough from Martinez ... and Martinez is obviously a better fit for what Frost wants the O to be able to do. However, as others stated ... Gebbia was just an injury away from taking over the O. If he took that opportunity and ran with it ... then it could have been his ship to captain. However, ultimately, how he handled thing clearly demonstrated that the guy simply was not really a team player ... thus, in the long run, the Huskers are better off having him gone.

Players should be free to go where they choose, the issue I believe is he didn't get what he wanted- the starting spot- so he packed up and left like 5 days before the season. That is childish and doesn't bode well for this young man when other adversities come into play in life. 99% of these players do not reach their true potential because of this sissy ass mindset......oh hello Derrick WIllies

I have no doubt that our defense will make one of those non scholarship back ups look like Andrew Luck when we play them.

If I were a coach trying to defend the zone read, I’d ask my players to take (and hit) the QB on every single exchange.
This. If an offense is going to hang its QB out to dry like that, you’ve got to make them pay for it. You might give up a few first downs early, but the ninth or tenth time that QB is looking for his mouthpiece, he’ll start considering handing that ball off quicker.
