Candidates are allowed to drop out and parties are allowed to replace them however they like.

And the primaries weren't around until 1912. Those were the days.
It's kind of dumb because our governmental institutions are not designed around political parties at all. But at the same time our elections have gotten into the bed so deep with political parties that we hold state funded elections on their behalf.
It should honestly be the reverse. We should have our institutions designed around the fact that there is going to be political parties. There arn't any real democracies without political parties. Then we should dump the state funded elections on behalf of those parties. Have the parties figure out their own way of determining candidates.
