grayshirt for Ava.Pretty much settles it. If nobody transfers, we can't get her. The only way for this to happen is if someone willingly leaves of their own choosing. I don't want anyone pushed out and it's not right to do so. It is what it is unless we hear about a transfer out. Bluder won't force anyone out, we know that, nor should she.
Yes unless you prefer Heiden with Utah, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, and Nebraska.Mallegni with best offer list of any Bluder commit since Clark, correct?
For comparison, volleyball is capped at 12 scholarships (including covid years). Last year Iowa had 17 players on the roster & assuming no one transfers before fall practice, they'll be at 16 for 23/24.I don't know what the hard set rules are. None of us apparently do. The men's team is capped at 13 last I was aware but the team always seems bigger than that to me. There very well could be the possibility that we can add Betts some way or another. I don't know. I've said in numerous posts the coaches know more than we do obviously and know what the rules are so if they're following a girl, there's probably a reason for that. I feel like Hawkdad is only slightly less limited with scholarship rules than we are most likely.
I still feel like the coaches know that a player is going to transfer but that's just me guessing. I just don't know why else the coaching staff would follow players unless they know something is up and I doubt there is any pushing out going on.
Grayshirt would mean paying her own way... for someone who just got hit with a ton of medical bills? Her scholorship comes with trainers and sports psychologist, and help with classes all of which will be critical for her this year. It one thing if a player wants to move on for fit or playing time. It's quite another to pull a scholarship to make room.grayshirt for Ava.
No thank youWow Hailey Van Lith from Louisville in the portal
Exactly! We might be able to do something as far as we know. For comparison, volleyball is capped at 12 scholarships (including covid years). Last year Iowa had 17 players on the roster & assuming no one transfers before fall practice, they'll be at 16 for 23/24.
I'm sure Clark could pay her own way no problem. I'm less sure that the NCAA would allow Clark to a be a walk-on after being on scholarship for three seasons when the clear intent is to free a scholarship for a 16th player. There has to be a way to add an extra player with NIL in play. Clark should be able to pick up enough NIL money to pay her way through school a couple times over next year...and give someone else her scholarship. There is no other player in college basketball more marketable than her next year, other than maybe Bronny James.
Connor McCaffery did that for 1 year, didn't he? I may be remembering wrong.I'm sure Clark could pay her own way no problem. I'm less sure that the NCAA would allow Clark to a be a walk-on after being on scholarship for three seasons when the clear intent is to free a scholarship for a 16th player.
It seems it would have to be the entering player and LB would have to be careful in the recruitment process bc a walk-on must be an “unrecruited” prospect.I'm sure Clark could pay her own way no problem. I'm less sure that the NCAA would allow Clark to a be a walk-on after being on scholarship for three seasons when the clear intent is to free a scholarship for a 16th player.
God. Hannah’s dad is the definition of “Iowa nice” lol idc what you say bud, I’m not for pumping the brakes when you have a generational talent like Clark and the window is closing on her eligibility. We just played in the national championship game!!! Strike while the iron is hot!! Man, if I had Twitter, I’d give him my personal opinion. Go ahead, stay with the roster you got.. you ain’t getting back to the final 4!! Not with what teams got coming back next year! We need 1 maybe 2 players in transfer portal and you see Iowa coaches already following 3 of the best in WBB. F*ck outta here dude!
I thought Davis was a grad transfer, one and done. With McCabe and Feurbach returning not sure why Davis would return.Wetering was actually brought in to play the 3 but can play either the 3 or 4. She is actually a high percentage shooter from outside. I expect her playing time to increase significantly next season but I'm unsure where she'll end up playing. There are so many interchangeable parts on next years roster other than PG where Clark/Davis are basically locked. My best prediction for next year if everyone returns and Jones doesn't take a hardship.
PG Clark/Davis
SG Marshall/McCabe/Davis/Feuerbach
SF Affolter/Feuerbach/Wetering
PF Martin/Wetering/Gyamfi
C Stuelke/O'Grady/Goodman/Ediger
Redshirts Jones, Johnson-Ettiene
If everyone would read the thread, it has been mentioned many times. We don’t have a scholarship problem. We have a roster spot problem. The U should convert Goodman's scholarship to academic. She's earned it, two years in as a 4.0 Health Sciences major. For that matter, even Caitlin as a 3 year, 3.88 Business major. Bluder does recruit outstanding students.
Thanks! Okay, so walk-on status doesn't help. My original thought was redshirting Ava J and KJE, though I don't even know if that's really a thing in women's hoops. Otherwise they might have redshirted Gyamfi. If everyone would read the thread, it has been mentioned many times. We don’t have a scholarship problem. We have a roster spot problem.
Women’s basketball is limited to 15 roster spots. And every spot can receive a scholarship.
Men’s basketball has the same roster limit. But only 13 spots can receive a scholarship.
I’m guessing the roster limit was put into place to limit elite teams from hoarding talent with walk-on status. In the world of NIL that is actually a good thing.
Dr. Tom used to have the gray squad, but I’m guessing either the rules changed in the last 20+ years or many of those guys weren’t on roster.

Curiosity took the better of me so I looked up Iowa men's team's roster on the official website:If we don’t make the Final 4, l’ll still be cheering for this team. Will you? Everyone last year at this time said there’s no way we’d ever make it past the Sweet 16, if even the round of 32. Look what Bluder did anyway. I’m all for creative solutions but running off anyone is never going to happen. There’s no point in continuing to act like anyone knows better than Bluder or that she’s going to pop on here and take a suggestion from a bandwagon fan.
Davis was not a grad transfer. She is also the only other returning true PG on the team. She is not athletic/as good of a rebounder as Kylie or shooter as McCabe but she is a better ball handler. If CC were injured, the only other PG we will have is an incoming freshman who will certainly need a year before she sees the floor.
Another thread on here has pointed out that the men’s bball team has 17 players — 13 scholarships plus 4 walk ons. Furthermore, walk ons at numerous schools have had their tuition paid for by NIL boosters (see the BYU football team). I think it’s def possible to do the same for WBB if it’s done in MBB. (If someone knows of a policy stating otherwise, PLEASE POST so we can put this to bed).
To me the real question is do we have boosters ready to shill out well over $100k to pay for two years of tuition + living expenses + cash? NOW? Not in a few weeks, like now.
Alternatively, someone could still transfer out. But the more we tear our own players down, the more damage we do to our brand and the more screenshot material we provide to our rivals. Doesn’t rly serve anyone at all to do so or hope that Bluder becomes a completely different person over night.
Curiosity took the better of me so I looked up Iowa men's team's roster on the official website:
Men's Basketball
The Official Athletic Site of the Iowa Hawkeyes, partner of WMT Digital. The most comprehensive coverage of Iowa Hawkeyes Men’s Basketball on the web with highlights, scores, game summaries, schedule and rosters.hawkeyesports.com
15 players are listed there. There are 4 walk ons, but only 11 scholarship players.
Yes, I believe 13 is the limit for men's teams. This seems to confirm that there is a hard limit of 15 players on a roster, men or women. I guess the question is with all the complaints about the disappointing performance by the men's team, nobody has added to the Fran blaming by pointing out that the team didn't even have a full set of scholarship players. Thanks for the info! Isn’t the men’s scholarship limit 13 tho (as opposed to 15 for women)?
I think if 13 is the limit for men, that proves that walk ons dont count toward the limit. But again I don’t know anything and I would love to see a screenshot of an NCAA policy or trusted media outlet reporting on this or something. For all we know there is a (sexist) rule in place specially about WBB that forbids this very thing we’re discussing, without regard to MBB at all.Yes, I believe 13 is the limit for men's teams. Is 15 the limit? I thought it was 13 lol. I don’t watch MBB so I have no reference point.I look at it this way. 15 is the roster spot limit, men's team only had 11 scholarship players, so in the end Iowa filled up the roster with walk ons, including last minute addition of assistant coach's son.
I'm very certain the scholarship limit is 15 for women and 13 for men. But it appears the roster limit is 15 for both, counting the walk ons. That's what I perceived by looking at Iowa men's roster. Is 15 the limit? I thought it was 13 lol. I don’t watch MBB so I have no reference point.
Men's is still allowed a roster of 15 but only 13 can be scholarship players. Fran always seems to have at least one scholarship to give each year that he banks until the end. MBB never have the problem we're seeing, and have consistently seen under Bluder's program. Fran normally strikes out on too many players and then has to scramble to fill a need.Is 15 the limit? I thought it was 13 lol. I don’t watch MBB so I have no reference point.
Don't know what the limit is, but yes FB also has a roster limit that includes 85 scholarship and a certain number of walkons. The rule was put into effect a number of years ago to stop teams like Nebraska that use to have huge numbers of walkons.Interesting. Can you tell me about football? Can walk ons exceed whatever their limit it?
She graduated from CMU in 3 years. This year as a grad transfer was her 4th year. Next year will be her COVID Year.I thought Davis was a grad transfer, one and done. With McCabe and Feurbach returning not sure why Davis would return.
You seem to know what you’re talking about. Thank you for your level headed responses, good info.Don't know what the limit is, but yes FB also has a roster limit that includes 85 scholarship and a certain number of walkons. Nothing like having those 300 man teams! Not hard to understand why Nebraska was so dominant.Don't know what the limit is, but yes FB also has a roster limit that includes 85 scholarship and a certain number of walkons. No one is in charge of the discussion; which should rightly include creative options for Iowa to honor Ava's scholarship, while maintaining the current trajectory of the program.Any discussion about Ava should stop. That young lady needs to stay on scholarship. She has more heart and drive than anyone posting. Coach Bluder and Jensen have been supporting her 100% and that's what we should all do. AVA strong!
Hopefully the link will work. I was partially right. Looks like rosters change between 105 and 125 depending on time of year. I don't remember Iowa ever being at the 125 level, but maybe they have. You seem to know what you’re talking about. Thank you for your level headed responses, good info.
But I’ve encountered a couple other people on this board who seem to believe walk ons have never counted against a roster limit in any sport.
If someone couple please provide a screenshot or copy from the specific NCAA policy in question, it would be very helpful in determining whether any of these conversations are even worth having. I tried googling it and couldn’t find anything, surprisingly.
