**NEW** Iowa Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread

Search results for Ava Heiden…

Sherwood's Ava Heiden is on the rise…
Heiden was selected as the Pacific Conference's Player of the Year as a sophomore. […] but the 6-foot-4 post has even bigger things in mind.
Missed this driving back from Field hockey. Big get for the Hawkeyes. Hope to have more regarding the commitment this week.

youtube videos show more blocks than baskets, she looks like she likes to get after it defensively. I would love to see a backcourt of Addie and Ava at some point. Twin Towers.
I'd love for Iowa to start landing star defensive 5s. Jan Jensen is arguably the best coach in the country at teaching low-post offense. If we start with a good defender, after a year or two she's going to be good at offense too.

Known visits beyond Iowa included Utah, Gonzaga and Portland. Probably others. Unclear if interest from Oregon/Oregon State or other strong recruiting PAC-12 schools.
Idk if she got an offer from OSU but they had fans who were hopeful on her.

Add them to the list of programs whose fan bases I don’t envy. Lots of frustration/disappointment in those circles.

Talked to someone within the athletic department and they said they think Heiden is a huge land. Said Jan Jensen and the rest of the staff are pretty pumped up about it.
She definitely is, on a few levels. Here are some upshots IMO:
  • Really cements our newfound national attention. Honestly I dont know of any commit who has come from farther than Michigan or Colorado since I’ve been following the program. Recruits are paying attention to us in a way they haven’t in the past. Part of this is likely due to her AAU coach’s confidence in our staff, which is also a very positive trend.
  • With regard to her home state specifically, we can’t be sure of her offers, but she grew up with four beloved, historically successful nearby programs (that have mostly been trending downward in recent years). People in that area will take notice of this choice, which again will help our momentum. May or may not be consequential but I’ve seen people on Reddit describe our up-tempo offensive focus as “west coast style” so perhaps it’s not a total coincidence.
  • Huge shot in the arm for our growing reputation as a destination for posts. No reason to not expect her to follow in the footsteps of Gustafson/Czinano as, at minimum, a dominant center. Heiden of course comes in much more highly rated than either of her predecessors tho, which is exciting.
  • Possible cherry on top: there is perhaps a less than zero possibility that this improves our chances to land her teammate, Jasmine Davidson.

I’m jazzed about the Heiden commitment. Certainly trust Jan Jensen with post evaluation. But home state interest and offers generally tell you something. So would be interested to know how much Oregon/OSU interest there was.

Also, not sure that Oregon’s and Oregon State’s recent stumbles on the hardwood have negatively impacted their recent status as recruiting juggernauts. Oregon’s current freshman class includes Hoopgurlz’s #s 7, 13, 36, and 59, the first two of which were McDonald’s AA. OSU, for its part, has a current freshman class with Hoopgurlz # 6 and 10, both of whom were McDonald’s AA.

Just realized a fun possible happenstance.

If we’re able to land Jasmine Brown (still NOT holding my breath…) that would mean Bluder landed a Top 50 HoopGurlz recruit in 5 consecutive classes (the others being Clark in ‘20, Edigar in ‘21, Stuelke in ‘22, Heiden in ‘23).

Even without Brown… not too shabby at all….

Her film shows an athletic, physical 6'4" player with great timing and explosion when rebounding and blocking shots. Her feet are good enough to guard on the perimeter and she should get up and down the court very well for her size (which is nice given how Iowa rim runs on the break).

Looks to mainly be a scorer inside 5 feet so may not have refined post moves or a face up game, but if there is one thing Bluder's staff is very good at it is developing posts into players who are very, very good on the block. It might take her 2 years, but I'd bet she ends up being a pretty good scorer eventually. Early on looks like a defensive and fast break type Center, which is fine.

Good analysis as usual. I was very pleasantly surprised by how quick & coordinated Heiden is for her height, not to mention her willingness to put it on the floor. Looks like a different starting point than our most recent great posts. ( Granted, I could put together 30 seconds of highlights that would probably get people excited about me as a D1 recruit )

May have just been poor defense on the part of a single player, but the girl who was guarding her went pretty hard for the pumpfake on the perimeter - I'm telling myself its because the scouting report said to respect her jumpshot.

I found myself hoping Heiden could reclassify to ;23 :) . Hell, I think she could actually be a difference maker for the Hawks this year, as she fills one of the few gaps on the team.

At any rate, this looks to be they type of recruiting get to be excited about.

I’m excited about her too

But we’re sitting pretty good at the post from what I can tell the next couple years…. not that I know anything about bball…..I wrestled ….. I barely know the difference between a post and a wing 😎

Not a peep about her commitment on the Oregon St. board - Benny's. It's usually a lively bunch of women's basketball fans on that board. Great get for the Hawks. Has a little bit of Bethany Doolittle in her from the video, but much more athletic looking. https://bennyshouse.com/board/6/bernices

I did see someone post a simple message like,"Sad news, Heiden picked Iowa, but it was clear they were her favorite team for awhile."

Shot blocker! Very athletic for her size. Looks to have a quick first step. Alot of positives to work with and develop. I'm looking forward to more tape. If she can get up and down he court in a hurry then the sky is the limit for this kid. Welcome aboard!

In other recruiting news, MS State got a
commitment from another 2023 Top 100 Guard today. Not sure it’ll impact Brown’s calculus tho since she’s only the 7th player on the roster for ‘23-‘24.

For those who listened to her podcast appearance, was anyone else surprised to hear her say she’d love to learn from CC? I assumed CC would be a deterrent to her tbh as someone she wouldn’t wanna compete with for minutes…but she spoke of it as a great opportunity.
