New mat design and size

Meh...

Not sure it really changes that much, to increase scoring they need to get to stall calls and stalemates faster and be more aggressive with penalties for fleeing the mat. This just changes the dimensions for working the edge of the mat.

I would have rather have seen them keep the traditional circle and add another circle two feet inside of it to act as a "warning track". When a wrestler steps outside of the exterior circle their opponent is awarded with a push out. It would keep guys more aggressive and engaged in trying to stay in the scoring area.

However, Not all coaches and administrators are supportive of this change. Some coaches are concerned with having to modify their coaching style to account for a mat with more scoring area. Nokomis High School head wrestling coach Colin Petit is one of them.

"I teach my wrestlers to work the edge of the mat in order to limit scoring," said Petit. "Now when one of my wrestlers backs up, they need to know if they are backing up into the corner or not. This is going to make it very hard for us to know where the boundary line is while we are defending shots."

That part of the article is crazy, I can't even imagine a coach spending time in the room teaching his wrestlers how to back up. The coaches quote in the article shows that the new mats are an improvement, but coaching the sport like that is more of a problem.

Edit: I fell for an April Fool's Day joke, I'm dumb...

Not sure if this is a joke or not but I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world.

Wow I feel stupid now, probably should have read the article more carefully before I posted this.

If it were for real I want to go buy some resolite stock. It would be a scary deal in that wrestling is already being cut at too many scholls. I do like it though and would at least encourage a wider area outside the circle to eliminate reaching the hardwood to escape danger.

if the cant do it at every institution, it shoule be a fixture at qualifiers and at the NCAAs.
