Next in line... commitment for football...

True about Zook. But things got worse when he left. Music to a jackboot's ears.
As for Nate's son: http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/stats/_/id/480413/nathan-scheelhaase
4 year starter and won bowls games in his first two years, the Zook is fired and Beckman leads them down the toilet. He clearly made the wrong choice imo but still he won more bowl games than Iowa did in the same time period.
Losing Scheelhaase is understandable considering the circumstances.
It's these legacies that appear less understandable.

tate wildeman - nebraska
trevor ruhland - notre dame - current starting center
ted karras - illinois (now in the nfl)
aj derby - arkansas (now in the nfl)
brian bobek - ohio state/iowa state - starting center?

Kirk losing legacy linemen just doesn't make sense. According to reports he didn't show any interest in 3 of those listed above.

Karras Is actually the nephew of Alex isn’t he? I believe his father played at Northwestern making him a Northwestern legacy correct?

The Hawks offered Wildeman - but perhaps they were recruiting Waggoner more heavily? I don't know. As it was - we only took 1 DE in the 2018 class and that guy was Waggoner. Frankly, I'm not going to complain about that one.

The Hawks landed AJ Derby - he just couldn't stomach the position change from QB (even though he ultimately had to do the same thing at Arkansas). That's a common problem with guys who are QBs ... they often have trouble enjoying the game as much if they don't have the ball in their hands more often.

As for Ruhland - we already were well situated with James Daniels. The lure to get Daniels in was giving him a path to C (and having his brother on campus). Also, right before Daniels, we had Blythe. Thus, the Hawks have been set at C for a while now.

The story with Bobek was pretty similar to that of Ruhland - the Hawks already had a bead on Austin Blythe. Given how their careers played out ... Blythe ended up being a 4-year starters .... Bobek spent time at Ohio State and Minnesota before ultimately starting his SR year at Iowa State.

Kirk tends to be really good about having an open door to program alumni - and he offers A LOT of guy who are legacies. However, I do know that sometimes parents can come across more than a little entitled to the coaches ... and if the parents rub the coaches the wrong way, that can impact the kid's recruitment.

Something occurred to me that I should've included in this awesome post. AJ was a 4 star athlete coming out of high school just like Drew Cook. I fear, also like AJ, that Cook will never see meaningful minutes on the Hawkeye field. Iowa doesn't have the luxury of benching 4 star legacies in this way. Within that line of thinking it is troubling that Epenesa will probably only be a 2 year starter. Kirk has got to get more playing time from his 4/5 star players.

does the dude even have another offer?
hard to imagine he'd say anything else ;)
Amani Hooker only had offers from UNI, South Dakota, and New Mexico. Iowa really liked what they saw in him ... and now he looks poised to be a star of our D in 2018!

Toren Young only had a listed offer from Iowa ... he's now poised to be a bruising and talented starter for us in 2018!

Iowa battled Temple for Akrum Wadley's services. The Hawks had to battle Luther College for Josey Jewell ... or something like that.

At this juncture, I'm inclined to trust what the coaches see in the young man.

Cook will see meaningful minutes this year and will play a ton next year. AJ saw a lot of snaps last year, and will see more this year. Does it matter if he starts this year?

Yep ... given that Fant may very well play himself into a high draft pick following the 2018 season ... it's looking as though a lot of opportunity will open up for both Beyer and Cook in 2019. So yes ... I agree that Cook most definitely WILL eventually see meaningful minutes for the Hawks!

If we're talking about anything but WR, I'd have no problem trusting the move ;)

Cytwins and clown fans in general know no other way to behave. It is the isu DBag culture.
ISU and its typical fan base are like a dog turd, its ugly, it stinks and is annoying to step in but occasionally that dog turd will make You slip and bust your arse, but in the end its still a dog turd . that's ISU football and fans in a nutshell. I put typical fans because there are 1 or two on here that seem normal other than the perverse support for ISU .

Did you see Epenesa Epenesa’s tweet on this exact subject? AJ needs to get better at some things and Parker Hesse’s a baller. Why would you sit an experienced player simply to put a guy who had stars coming out of high school out there? AJ as a true freshman was in the game plenty as it is. It’s not like we’re Kentucky where 4 and 5 Star kids go to disappear.

This. I feel better every time I see Hesse on the field. I know he will be in position, he will not lose leverage, he will set the edge. This is in no way a criticism of AJ.

I don’t know how many meaningful minutes he received but AJ received many meaningful snaps last year. Minutes=basketball Snaps=football Benched=basketball Sidelined=football. Kinda shows how much you know about FB.

Iowa was one of the programs to offer guys like Dezmon Briscoe and Michael Crabtree very early on .... and they each went on to play for Kansas and Texas Tech respectively and have very productive college careers. These are just two examples in a very long list guys who Iowa has projected early at WR ... and they turned out to be very productive players.

Our development of WRs seemed like it may have been at its best with Coach Campbell as the WR coach ... but, even then, there were "issues" with his approach.

With the right position coach and having a QB who can deliver them the ball .... all Iowa needs to do is start a new tradition for itself at WR. It's entirely possible that it can happen .... but will it?

I believe that in the first part of his post, he was referring to AJ Derby.

Muscle man Copeland will lead the way

I wonder if Hesse is in line to have the most career starts for a Hawkeye? I'm not sure if Iowa has a football Hall of Fame but he might be a candidate if he has a stellar last year.
