Next Up IL

Certainly did for Illinois last year, IMO … ended the season with three straight road wins at #23 Wisconsin, #2 Michigan and #7 Ohio State, followed by Rutgers, #5 Iowa and #9 Ohio State in the BTT, with the latter being an emotional OT game for a championship. Not an excuse, but by the time we were laying an egg vs. Loyola, you could honestly tell we were just exhausted.

Hoping the Big Ten can make some runs this year!

Could be some truth to that. I've always wondered if a run through the conference tournament to the title is necessarily always a good thing. Yeah you want to be playing well at the end of the season, but at what point does positive momentum turn into fatigue? I've seen enough teams win their conference tournament and then flame out in the NCAA's. Of course maybe some of those examples are just coincidence. There are no easy NCAA tournament games.

He has absolutely not been the same since the head injuries, really unfortunate and scary. With that said, there have been flashes and the kid ALWAYS brings 110% effort. He was lights out vs. Purdue in the double OT game, but he got hurt AND sick again shortly after. Cautiously optimistic he’s on the right path.

As for the game, I expect an intense battle. We have no answer for Murray, and you have no answer for Kofi. You’ve been playing better defense lately, and we probably have a small shooting advantage. Both teams will be desperate to disrupt the other’s game plan, and I think it will be very fun to watch if you aren’t a fan of one of our teams, because I’m predicting a stressful one!
I'm a Hawk fan to the bone, but I have zero problem appreciating special players on opposing teams - and that kid is special. I don't care who you root for, I don't know how you can't love watching him play (except against your own team, of course!) Hopefully, he gets on track - in about 10 days!

Illinois is not a good matchup for the Hawks. With that said, as mentioned above...they are not playing their best now and we are. Always a tough game in Champaign. It will be a good game with us coming up a little short.
Thats why Iowa needs to be a worse matchup for Illinois.

One thing I know is true. Iowa players will not be intimidated by Illini's "see of orange". They love beating a team on the road by more than 10 points and they have done it a number of times this year.

I expect Illinois to shoot really well due to the emotions of Sr night. Hawks have to lock down and defend. we are rebounding much better now so if we can improve that stat over the first game, we have a good chance to prevail.

One thing is certain; the Illini will have to beat Iowa. Iowa will not beat itself. Illinois has all the parts needed for an NCAA championship but as yet they have not been connected. Connection has been the Hawkeye's strength.

Spread out our guys as much as possible and get the ball to Keegan/Kris (whoever is being guarded by Cockburn) at the top of the key. No way Cockburn can handle those two in open space.

Use same double down strategy as used against Michigan. I don't think Cockburn is as good of a passer as Dickinson is.
Koffi is no where near the passer HD is but he's not as bad as he was last year.

He's atleast aware of the concept of kicking it out now and Illinois has more shooters around him than UM has around Dickinson.

But yeah, you have to double. Otherwise he just steam rolls people.

I still can’t believe how Iowa and Illinois and the entire conference did so poorly in the tournament last year. It’s like everybody beat each other up so much that they forgot that there was actually a tournament after the Big Ten tournament.
Yeah, I feel like the conference was clearly better overall last year but that grind of having to battle a good team every time wore the whole conference down.

lol so many bad takes in one short post. 🤣 First off, thinking Kofi's "stamina is not great" is so laughably ignorant and untrue . He's a freak of nature (7 ft tall, 285 pounds of muscle ) runs the floor really well, gets hacked a ton of times every game he's played in this season alone and his stats are insanely impressive as well.

and lol at thinking Illinois "isn't playing for squat". jfc you couldn't be more wrong on that one as well. Illinois is also playing for a good seed for the tourney and it'll be Trent Frazier and Damonte Williams' final home game in front of a sold out crowd for Senior Night.
Sorry not sorry but I can't help but be hyped and confident for this home game vs you guys(not cocky though cause you guys are playing lights out as of late, more so cautiously optimistic since we're playing at home )

May the best team win and here's to ZERO injuries!
Oh, I agree he's a freak of nature and runs the floor well and all that. But he's like most other big guys that are really muscular, their running endurance isn't great. I think he's a fantastic college player, don't be offended. But when we played him it looked like he was in need of a frequent breather.

If you had read my entire post, you might have caught where I mentioned that senior day can actually be a negative sometimes, the emotions take away from the execution. I remember Illinois beating Iowa at Iowa a few years back when Devyn Marble was a senior. Time for payback.

Coleman Hawkins seems like a decent guy to guard Murray. How is Grandison's perimeter quickness?

Damonte Williams had his right shoulder injured last night in a collision with a Penn St. player. I highly doubt he'll be available or play much in Sunday's game against Iowa...

It was Grandison who was hurt, not Williams. They called it a "shoulder sprain", probably won't know his status until game time.

Both teams need to be good to be hated rivals. You guys may hate Northwestern, but you’re not rivals.
Northwestern doesn't rise to the level of hate, they are just an annoying little brother. Illinois doesn't really have a true rival. St Louis area Illini will say it's Mizzou, Quad Cities folks will probably pick Iowa, those near Champaign would probably go with Indiana or Michigan.

I consider all the traditional Big Ten schools as rivals, don't care at all about PSU, UNL, MD, Rutgers.

And I liked it better when Bohannon was shooting 25% from 3, now that he's making shots again it really changes your team.

They got away with being really physical with Keegan last time. Keegan was just coming back from the injured ankle if you remember and wasn't 100%. We are a much different team now with the way that Perkins, Kris Murray, and Keegan are playing. Rebraca has a tall order to defend Kofi but we can slow him down and we may need to get Josh (Big #23) in the game for some minutes to pound him.

As always...if they let them play...as I expect...we are going to have to be physical.

What is up with that Cuerbelo kid? He was an absolute killer last season and I thought primed for an All-American year. Sounds like a concusssion has derailed his entire year and he hasn't gotten his rhythm back. Pretty scary.
He might still be what you call a killer. Maybe he won't remember last year. We won't tell him. It will be our secret. ;)

After beating Michigan on the road it feels like were playing with house money. Win would be a bonus...

Any Illini fan that watched in the ‘80s definitely, most definitely, feels Iowa is their most hated rival.

Depends on geography. Illini fans in the STL area and Southern IL definitely hate Mizzou the most, with Eastern IL fans usually defaulting toward Indiana and Western IL/Quad Cities fans definitely choosing Iowa. Chicago fans (like me) and everyone in between in the state kind of fluctuates, but right now Iowa is hot again! Great for both programs, IMO.

Saw this too. Unusual enough to play in 4 senior nights in one season, but to have a chance to go 4-0. Probably fairly rare feat if it happens.

Kofi still won't win the BIG POY. He is a freakesh athlete. But still has polishing to do to his game. You get to see a healthy Keegan this time around.

I know I'm alone, but I wouldn't mind seeing the BTT go away and have the B1G play a true round robin schedule to determine the league champion. Wouldn't add any more time to the season and there wouldn't be the spate of games all played in a few days time wearing down the teams. I realize that the BTT is a money maker, but I think it hurts our teams in the important tournament, the NCAA's. Again, I know it won't happen.

As usual, the officiating will have a big say on who wins tonight's game. If they make both teams play basketball, we have an even chance. If they let one team, or really both teams, play rugby, we could get blown away.

What I like about league tournaments is that, in addition to getting the “best” teams in the Dance, they can also get the teams playing the best basketball into March Madness. The teams who come out of nowhere and make a run in the NCAA’s is what makes March Madness what it is, imo

This. Plus, all leagues play a conference tournament. Hard to use that as an excuse for the B1G doing poorly in the dance.
