Next years team

He has very little experience.

Even if he practices next year he's extremely green and I would guess far from starting.
Well a big strong wrestler with great feet and balance can practice several basic techniques to try to consume two offensive linemen.

Is Lachey coming back after missing half a season last year and there not being a lot of productive passing volume to him this year?
He’s likely a day 2 draft pick. I don’t see him using his Covid year. We also have plenty of depth at the position so he is not an irreplaceable loss imo.

Oh I know Astrenga is really good and Ortwerth looks to be a big time player. I was just wondering if Lachey wanted to come back and maybe have a huge year with Sullivan.

But he has missed two games this year and a bunch last year.

He probably has a ton of good video from his career at Iowa for the pros to look at. His legacy name can help also.

Like that really mattered. Wish some of those guys wouldn't had come back.
Next year is a disaster anyway you look at it. No talent and while not a brutal schedule, certainly tougher than usual. Playing Oregon, MichSt, USC, Indiana and at PennSt will take 30 pts, at least to win, and we know that is not happening. Oregon might put up 1/2 a hundred, this scheme cannot defend that speed and talent.
Key to next year beat the Minny, Whisky and Rutgers to avoid a 2 to 4 win season. It is going to be ugly. With the following year looking worse since the schedule is actually tough.
lol, we will do better than your fuskers.

I mean…we’ve just gotten insanely spoiled with a top5/top 10 defense the last few years. This year we’ve mostly ranged from good to very good at times. I’m concerned about all the departures, but 1) I think we’ve recruited well on that side, so I don’t think the cupboard is bare, and 2) have a chance to “ease” into the season with the noncon slate being manageable. Order of the games will be huge also imo, as that’s a lot of travel on that schedule.
Good point on the schedule/travel. I'm curious to see how other central time zone teams are fairing going from one coast to another.

Also, I love Phil and the defense but Phil's defenses have benefited from subpar B1G west offenses for years. I'll include Wiscy, gophers, NW, neb and illini in that as well. Not one west team averaged 25 pts/game last year. All the offenses stunk for the most part the last 4 years. Iowa still has a very good defense.

As always thanks for "ray of sunshine" regardless of how informed it is or is not......

Graves still has a year at least and I think he might come back
Yes he has eligibility but he's already graduated and his draft stock will probably never be higher then this year, especially if the defense struggles next season.

Me thinks Iowa is going to be better than most people expect them to be. I think this obviously depends on how Sully performs and grows in the off season and how fast we can reload both lines…

I think Iowa has some excellent young g talent on the defensive end and dline. I am not sure who’s coming back on the o-line but I think the cupboard is way more full than empty. I think replacing the linebackers is going to be extremely difficult but I think they have some good reserves waiting in the wings.

I know KJ2 is as good as gone but they have some deep talent at RB position…time will tell but I think we might have a great season next year most wouldn’t anticipate. Let’s take care of Business and win the last 4 so we can hit the 10 win mark this season.

Hoping for a great game this coming Friday and get this Pasadena curse off our backs.

Go Hawks
We need a stud LB and 2 OL from the portal.

Understand your reasoning but I think Graves definitely has room to improve and raise his draft stock.

Major overhaul any way you slice it. The 2025 back 7 will feature at least 5 new starters with limited experience. Parker’s biggest challenge during his tenure as DC at Iowa…. If he is still here….. if Ferentz does not retire….which I hope is the case.
Need to get a couple OL and would be good to get a DB, LB to help with depth and experience.

You think? I don’t see him getting drafted after this year with injuries and all.

Absolutely. Has all the measurables you want, been productive when healthy. Injuries might push him to day 3 pick. Tho.
Day 3 seems more likely. Injuries will drop his stock. Lack of productivity this year will have an impact as well although that is less his problem than it is the poor QB performance and overall bad passing game.

Too many other factors at play right now imo - I've no idea what the draft class looks like next year; obviously the stuff you pointed out...but on the other hand, Iowa TEs have a great deal of credit in the NFL right now. That counts for alot.

Yeah, and the dline. Not to mention the secondary. So pretty much D all of the above
Lutmer will be fine, the secondary certainly won’t be worse than this year. The D-line with Llewelyn, Allen, Graves and Pittman starting along with Iose and a bunch of talented prospects could be better than this year, especially at rushing the passer. I look for Sharar and Harrell to be good linebackers . Defense will be pretty good.

I mean - can we take a step back and just state that the D has been good this year...we're just used to be great.

Going to be difficult to guess at next year…offense seems to be trending up, defense loses a lot but I think they’ve recruited well - but the schedule will be a bear. Quite frankly, it might well be a better overall team but a worse record than this year.

“In 2025, Iowa will host UAlbany (Aug. 30), UMass (Sept. 13), Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Oregon and Penn State, and travel to Iowa State (Sept. 6), Rutgers, USC, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Dates for the 2025 conference schedule will be announced later this fall“
Yep. Our days of picking up easy wins in the Big10 West are over. Shit will get real … starting next season. 6-7 wins tops…

It is still a good defense, big drop in Yards per play. Currently 49th at 5.2 YPP. Last year it was 3.9 and #1

Expecting the defense to be in the top 5 every season is not realistic. At least the offense is improved, thank Beth for that

Perfectly said. The two biggest problems IMO is whoever you would pick as "our best pass rusher" is above average at best. Also the overall lack of depth on the DL is a killer.

Case in point Saturday and MSU games when we had a shot at the end the D gets pushed around and can't get the ball back to the O.

Overall idk that I think the DL depth has been bad - it's been good enough to get by, tho not what we'd all prefer.

Bigger issue as you mentioned has been the inconsistent pass rush.

Just a weird kinda year where the D just hasn't consistently clicked, which is really surprising out of the LB/DBs in particular.
