Next Year's Team

OL and LB among several concerns.

Sullivan is a solid QB but when teams force him to pass from the pocket I'm not convinced he can deliver - he's has great mobility, average arm strength, and spotty accuracy. Not sure on how fast he makes reads. People are reacting to his good play when our running game was working and he was able to use his legs but not forced to carry a game with his arm. When he's forced to do that, I don't think he can.

So getting a QB on the roster who can win a game when forced to throw is pretty critical. With strong RB room but sketchy OL I'm not sure how our running game will be, but clearly won't be as good as this year. Can we increase our passing by 100 yards / game? We'll need to.

I honestly think it's the QB. Sometimes on passing plays everyone is going to be covered. It even happens in the NFL. All I know is during games this year there were guys open and opportunities to throw guys open which brings me back to the QB.

Cade is clearly broken and there were multiple passes a game where he just flat out missed a guy. Sully is more of a runner than passer. Lainez seems to be the same as Sully. Resar played QB for Iowa for about 10 minutes and Lester saw enough to move him to WR, and finally we have a walkon transfer in Stratton who seems to try his best but just isn't it.

I think a more polished passer simply makes everything look better. I think they can't overthink the QB position. Go get a productive G5 guy or go get one of the top FCS QB's in the portal. I know we hate the Gophers but Max Brosmer would have been great to have with this year with how well we ran the ball.

I bet everyone here would take 2,600 yards, 17 TDs, 5 Ints, 67 Comp% out of the QB position this year.
Agreed, but it kind of sucks needing to “recruit” a new QB every year. I assume the gophers QB Brosmer was only available to Mn for one year?

Your username and avatar and what they represent are provocative. Again, you're aware of this.

You knew that not everyone would care for it, and I happen to be one of those people. Again, it is what it is
Sorry you’re so easily triggered. They have support groups and stuff for that.

And you still haven’t explained why you hate KF so much.

I’m excited for the safety position and see Nwankpa taking over at FS since that’s his more natural position and Parker’s defense seems to feature it more than SS. Entriger will be really good there.

I'm still mystified how a veteran defense could regress this much?

Maybe the secondary never was anything but average and DLinemen like Evans covered up their deficiencies?
The pass rush certainly was horrible.
We will never completely know why the defense fell off this season, but this isn't a video game. Players don't just get + attributes in the off-season, are 100% healthy or injured on game day, and players don't always know where to go on any given play. Reality involves nagging injuries, distractions, mental health, etc.

Of course fans will always look for answers, but they are never as simple as we try to make them.

I think that it is a mistake to equate inexperience with a lack of talent. Iowa will certainly be inexperienced next season. I think that there is enough talent on the roster to have a successful season. But it will be interesting to see what Iowa does with the portal.

If Nwankapa returns, I really like the Safety unit. Also, I believe Zach Lutmer could provide quality depth. LB is a WIP. Would love to see at least one experienced CB transfer in and earn playing time.
If Nwankapa returns? Where would he go?

Going 5-1 against teams about as good as or a little better than us, with 4 of those being on the road, would be against the odds. Like I said, I’d even consider 4-2 to be impressive.
I listed 8 opponents that I think the Hawks have a good chance to beat next year…I think 6 wins against those 8 is the floor.

He's gone....
Unless the next coming of Stanzi,
Drew Tate, CJ Beathard (obvious 3 year starter) comes around they need to recruit the QB position every year like they don't have one.

And maybe he isn't.
Are you kidding me? Did you forget he couldnt make it as the starter for NW? The bar was so incredibly low here that anyone competent would appear good.

He wouldn't be a starter on any top tier big10 team and if you expect more than 5 wins next year they'll need to land a legitimate qb via portal

Very important that we get after guys in the portal. We don’t seem to be developing guys as well as we used to along the OL. I do have to think our OL won’t be much different from this year’s simply because some of those guys were so bad. It’s crazy to me you have 3 and 4 year starters that may be UFA’s. Need to get some defensive guys for sure.
Well that bad OL did lead the B1G in rushing. Just saying....

Was Allen listed on the injury report for the game? I don't remember him playing a single snap. If he was not listed, that would concern me for next year.
Yes. Kirk said that in his presser, and he was listed. He needs surgery in Jan and then another later. He'd been playing banged up for awhile, probably why his play wasn't the same last few games.

I'm not sold that the OL will be worse. Posters have spent the last several years bitching about Richman, Colby, and Jones (who as a unit led the B1G in rushing), ad now their gone. I think with those guys who had over 100 starts Kirk stuck with them. Not sure that Lauck, Peiper, Borud, Fox, Myslinski or Noland can't step in with Dunker, Elsbury, ad Stephens and do well. At LB we start over just like we do EVERY few years, and we always come up with the guys. Harrell and Sharer have been understudies for three years just like Higgens was. Next man in......

Don’t think I ever said he had a bad year, the dline depth will be thin next year, feel free to use that search bar and you’ll find that I have quoted he may be league bound
???? What? In post #46 YOU said "Graves will need to take a massive step next year" That was your post in quotes....

A massive step as in he will be the key to the dline, double teamed or not, he is going to have to have a huge year for the defense to be successful.
Graves will be fine. This was Pittmans first year seeing much action. He should step up next year. They''ll need Hubert (who played some this year) and Maddox B-Johnson the soph to step into roles. We've recruited a LOT of DE's with potential the last few years, and may see someone like Allen or Crawford move inside. lose Epenesa may see some spot duty at De as well....

If you want to move forward and appreciate your accomplishments, you have to remember who you were. Think of it as a memorial for the players and fans who suffered through the dark years.
I sat through the dark years, 20 straight dark years. I went from the crib at not yet 2 years old to my last year of grad school with only very dark years, like surviving the bombers over Berlin or Hamburg. Iowa should be more like Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan St., now Nebraska, Indiana, Maryland, Rutgers or Northwestern.

Nothing Ferentz makes me think of the bad years, because there's always Bob Comings or Todd Lickliter to remind Iowa fans how good we have it. You are really going to hate the "what comes next part" should you be an actual Iowa fan, because it is really going to suck.

Allen isn’t moving inside

I liked what I saw in Sullivan except for the bravado. I think that is what cost his season vs UCLA.
There was no real backup for the ucla game and he was obviously being throttled to not run. In doing so they made him a tentative runner and subject to getting hurt because of it.
Talk to any elite athlete: injuries come when you’re not going 100% and worried about not getting hurt.

Some people on here have said Pittman is too small. He did a good job this year playing at 293. He will likely be a little bigger next season. I don’t know how some of the young DT’s are progressing but I think Pittman will be fine as the starter. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a DT brought in through the portal to be in the rotation.

Graves did not have a bad year, Thats crazy, If he takes a step UP it will be to the league since he's already graduated....
Graves going pro would be 100x more of a leap of faith than Lukas Van Ness jumping despite having never started a game.

He is not ready to fill an NFL roster spot at DT.......yet.

His play toward the end of the season, though, can help springboard him toward a dominant 2025, which can serve to maximize his draft statuts.

He may have "graduated" and completed his school work, but athletically he is a true junior.

I think Sullivan will be an above average QB when he is given the chance to start from the go. Injuries are the biggest concern with him. That will depend somewhat on the OL.

Are there any COVID years left?
Above average for Iowa? Definitely not above average for the B10.

I'm fully aware he's a junior. My point was he has the option to leave, and already has a degree. I'd love to see him return. Not saying he'd be a high draft pick, but I certainly think he'd make a roster.....

Nice to have the ole "But the '60s and '70s" argument from the old timers every once in a while. Reminds me of my Dad talking about the great Cleveland Browns teams from the pre-Super Bowl era.

Why didn't Iowa football go into the doldrums for 20 years after Hayden retired? Maybe because the program is now stronger than it was before he ever got here? And it's even stronger now. I have no idea why so many fans are scared to death that the program is going to fall off a cliff as soon as KF leaves. The program is way bigger than him. Did you ever consider that Iowa might get even better?

It's ok to consider moving on from a 70-year-old, 26-year head coach. Don't be such a chicken sh*t.

I wouldn't say people are scared to move on from Ferentz. The "scary" part is one bad hire can set a program back many years and create a revolving door of coaches.
