Nick Brooks down to 3…Iowa not one of them. Another recruiting/NIL FAILURE!

Let me know when any of these huge "misses" we have had sets weight room records, or ranks top 5 in the combine or does anything really. Oh I am sure there is/will be a couple, but every single year the sky is falling because we "missed" on someone. Well, that means we missed on a lot of someones and yet............... I am waiting to hear how they did long term. Who is the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL and where did he go to school????? Mic drop.

He lived in the South except for last year and moved back like last week, and in the year he was here he proved to be very, very big but very, very raw. I know you're not supposed to feed the trolls but damn.
Wrong. He grew up in Cedar Rapids before moving to Georgia for his freshman and sophomore years then moved back to Iowa for his junior year.

With less than 3,000 Swarm members we don't have unlimited funds. That amount of memberships is very disappointing.

Now before you the Anti-NIL crew comes running; I will be the first to admit I'm not a huge fan of NIL. But my love for Iowa athletics and the enjoyment I get throughout the year far outweighs my disdain for NIL.
Are any former players from the KF era, in particular NFL Hawkeye Alum, donating yet?

Now is back in the south. Was pretty interesting to speak with one of his coaches from the north. They were pretty clear that he was talented one on one but that it didn’t translate to games and he wasn’t very upset that he was gone.

Yes there are former players that have joined. Last I heard none of the NFL current players (although I can't say for certain).

On a a somewhat unrelated note. Has anyone heard have there been some former NFL players (one big name was specifically mentioned) that have said they will be donating a large sum to the athletic dept directly and then not followed through? I heard that recently from someone that had been pretty well connected to the program.

Correct. I didn't say "grew up", I said "lived". Any other situation he wouldn't be an Iowa kid, he'd be a Georgia kid but because he moved back to CR for a year he's an Iowa kid again. 3/4 years in Georgia makes him Georgia's recruit.

For the record, I wish the kid would've panned out for Iowa. I love seeing kids from Kennedy play at Kinnick. I hope it happens more often. But from what people have been saying pretty consistently, he wouldn't have contributed meaningful minutes for a while if ever.

Semantics, but living 15 years out of 17 years somewhere including the first 14 makes you from there. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

last years class would be the 2024 class, just as this year is the 2025 class.
Ahh... I thought he was referring to the 2023 class of Iowa recruits which was about as underwhelming as it gets, especially after Kueter decided he was going to focus on wrestling.

Keuter is only taking 10 months off, and I think the LB spot is one we are perfectly fine at. I guess I don't really see what the problem with that class is, Proctor was a money bag, no one else on that list has made a peep. Sama, Iowa didn't offer, Kohl will probably transfer out, Lutmer is in the 2 deeps.

🤔 Iowa landed 2 of the top 10 in state recruits. Number three and number ten and number three isn't a lock to ever play. Anybody looking at this and calling it a success is wearing some serious black and gold glasses.

followed by signing 7 of the top 8, and they pulled Brix's offer the following year. Again, hindsight is 20/20, but missing on Sama may go down as the big miss for the hawks. Proctor was the biggest miss, Depaepe was never Iowa bound and I bet will be a bust, both Newsom kids should have come to Iowa when they had the opportunity, Smolik will never see a down at PSU. So please inform me on how this class was a bust.

You're trying way too hard. Everyone knows how important it is for Iowa to lock down the state to be successful. 2024 was much, much better. 2023 wasn't good by any stretch. Hopefully 2025 and 2026 look a lot more like 2024. IMO Brian being gone along with an offense that isn't the worst in the land can help ensure that that's the case.

Time will tell if 2023 was a bad year for Iowa and in-state recruiting or if it was actually a down year for in-state prospects. Way too early to say.

Pecking order for college football has changed little with NIL.

Only difference is the players are getting some of the money now.

Top teams before NIL are still top teams. Those just below the top are also the same.

That's good to know some former players have joined.

Haven't heard that about the former players not following through. I can tell you there is a beloved hawkeye that still lives local to the area that doesn't have the best reputation while doing business within the community.

Yes I have heard that too. I believe he was a finalist for the color guy gig if we are talking about the same guy. He's pretty successful tho. Unfortunately if you are a landlord in Iowa City it seems to go with the territory to maybe not be easy to work with?

Who are we talking about?

When your program has limited NIL compared to many other programs, you have to have a VERY good strategy on how to use it so that you don't waste any of it.

I believe that is why we budget much of it to RETAIN players rather than ACQUIRE unproven freshmen. Keeping players who are PROVEN at the college level ensures you aren't wasting NIL, whereas many Freshmen recruits who haven't proven anything can have a wide array of outcomes, such that you could waste 25-50% of your budget on players who don't play up to their star ranking. This also applies to proven TRANSFERS although those players have a slightly higher risk than just keeping your current starters an extra year or two.

In that sense, I'm ok losing some freshmen recruits now and then to bigger budget schools because - while it still stings - at least I know we are trying to be smart about it. Sometimes the players that go NIL hunting aren't the best fit for our program anyway, as their focus isn't always on being the best football player and teammate, but in cashing in. This influx of $$ can cause them to lose some of their incentive to work hard on and off the field.

Our coaches have a good eye for talent along with a blueprint of the typer of player that they want and fits in to the program. We are lucky in that sense.

The low number of members of Swarm, while EXTREMELY EXTREMELY frustrating for current supporters, is really going to give our fan's a rude awakening when it's time to replace KF & Fran and some names fans THOUGHT might be at the top of the list will snub us.

Dominique Douglas has thrown some fun tickets into the swarm 😉

Can someone clarify - I was thinking that the proceeds of the individual Swarm enlistments went into a fund that was used to pay current players equal amounts, whereas all other NIL outside of that went towards individual cases where we target players to go after. If that was true then doubling our enlistments may help ALL players, but if you really want to go big game hunting at the level the Brooks might command, you need large $$ contributors.

My sense is that while it would be nice to have twice as many swarm members, the real gap between us and the blue bloods or maybe even a program like Iowa State is that we don't have as many billionaire alumni willing to contribute millions to NIL in ADDITION to what we ask them for on facility/infrastructure projects (like a downtown basketball arena!).

Even if some of the Swarm donations went towards the Ad-Hoc target list, I still think in aggregate it is the whales that make up the biggest gap. Iowa State has at least 2 mid-size whales to work with.

It would be nice to have some big dogs but Brad has stated if we had 10,000 members we would have one of the better collectives in all of college sports. That should be attainable with our fanbase.

And if we had more members and saw more success would that bring in some whales? Some current NFL players? Zach Johnson? Ashton Kutcher? We did have Heinrich's and Rastetter do a match donation last year before the end of the calendar year.

We need some momentum and while at times we have had some momentum our fans our more interested in hanging their hat on the fact that if we ever make it to Indy we will drink the city of out Busch Light. smh

All in all Brad deserves so much kudos on setting this up. All of the hours and his own money he has donated. Legendary Hawkeye for sure!
