NIL is ruining college football

Millions of $$ for kids to play a college sport is stupid.

Cheering for millionaires from one school play millionaires from another is difficult to do.

Especially, when I know lots of people who are struggling to get by.
Good points but it doesn’t seem to diminish enthusiasm from fans of Texas, Oregon, Ohio State et. al. Unfortunately, Iowa doesn’t appear to have the kind of wealthy donors who can/will support this at Iowa.

I think it’s still very early. All those programs will continue to dominate the portal but I do think they will lose depth over time as players will want to showcase their talent. We certainly need some parameters around it though. It’s insane.

Schools are now buying teams instead of having to recruit.

"Please consider our school. We have an excellent business/medical school, fans, alumni, etc., and we have great coaches, facilities, etc."

Athlete, "Yeah yeah .... how much $$ am I going to get?"

Nothing new under the sun. Just bigger numbers. Used to be a bag of cash under the table and a job/house for Mom in the city.
Now it's all in the open and in the $Millions.

Now that it's transparent - I do agree that there will be a loss of fan interest eventually - unless of course your team is one of the same 10 or so every year that get to compete for the natty.

NIL isn't the problem. The lack of rules is. And now you're about to see how that stupidity plays out in the larger society, so buckle up.

As for people struggling to get by, tell MAGA and the new ruling oligarchy. They'll fix it. LOL

That cadre of billionaires could feed, house, and clothe millions. Instead, they want more and bigger yachts, trips into space, and unlimited authority. They ban abortion but couldn't give a damn--or a cent--to help the unwanted kids once they're actually born.

The issues of college football, and there are many, pale in such a dystopian context.

What a loser.

I’ve been saying it for a year or so—and I get nobody cares—but I’m pretty sure my interest will start waning quite a bit in the next year or two unless there are changes made.

Mine has been waning for years. I used to sit in front of of the tv all day on saturdays watching college football. Now, it might be on as background noise. I still try to watch all Iowa games but if there is a schedule conflict… whatevs. I used to record them and watch when I’d get home but now, no thanks. Admittedly, a big part of this has been mostlly due to my kids and their fall sports schedule. I am at my kids games all day Saturday these last several years. I do wonder when that is over how my feelings will be about college football.

The nfl is a far superior product anyway. I would rather waste my time on the far superior product.

Your Queen raised a billion dollars, had more billionaire donors, and ended up 20 million in debt. Seems like that could've done a lot of good elsewhere.

This is a discussion about football. Take your ignorant CNN talking points somewhere else.

No one cares. Life's not fair.
I think people care about the topic OP brings up. Personally, my interest in college and pro sports has dwindled significantly in recent years. I’ll watch and cheer, but Iowa winning and losing doesn’t have nearly the impact on me as it did as recently as 5 years ago. The transfer portal and NIL are big reasons why. In a way it’s making me despise college football. So I think, if I’m feeling this way, there are many others who are, too. I have too many other things that require my money than some 18-22 year-old football or basketball player.

You mean one of the same 5

The one thing I'm looking forward to is that we will see who can and can't coach.
Lot's of other questions:
How will coaches handle making millions less than players?
What is the character of these athletes you are getting in?
Will athletes stick around longer or what is this impact on the NFL?
Did NIL save college sports instead of ruining them by saving the NFL from doing their own thing? NFL can't compete like this because many rookies won't get paid this.
Will this kill the NBA G League? Will it ruin lower classes of major league baseball? (I'm fine with that by the way)
What will this look like when we get to revenue sharing?
Can we stop paying almost EVERYONE at the NCAA offices? They do nothing and how can they enforce anything.

Some of those questions are far fetched, some maybe not so much.

Your first sentence seems on point. College football has entered a dark place but this can't go on forever one way or the other. Corporations and high dollar donors won't want to continue this indefinitely. The future seems hard to predict but as this plays out it seems certain the landscape will look different with some time than it does now. I feel grateful that with all his flaws Kirk has put an emphasis on maintaining stability and I think it will pay dividends down the road.

Yes, I know that

OP will be even more disgusted when players are paid $22 million a year on top of NIL
That doesn't make him wrong. This whole thing has gone so far out of bounds. The original lawsuits were for players to be compensated for use of their likeness in mkt. (When they actually had some marketable skill). Now we have high school juniors and mercenaries getting paid millions and some of those "players" haven't done a thing in college football. They're being paid on their supposed potential, and we have fans lining up to support this nonsense. Did someone call for "ludicrous"? And NO not the State Farm commercial either....

And yet we have fans even here chomping at the bit to throw their hard earned cash at this mess, and even worse ridiculing people who see how clearly ridiculous this is and refuse to take part in this madness.

See I was always the other way where I liked watching the “kids” play and be able to cheer for the same ones on “my” team for a few years. Now with the new way of doing things that’ll likely be gone soon.

At this point, as has been the case in the past, we could be handing out Ferraris and we would still be at a vast disadvantage to the usual suspects. You have to be able to talk players into joining your program before you can pay them. What difference makers do we attract? We have become the laughing stock of the college football world with broadcasters regularly making fun of Iowa's "offense." How can that possibly help our recruiting efforts. Ferentz dug this chasm when he hired his son and insisted keeping him when it was obvious that he wasn't the answer in that particular position. Now we have a new OC that seems to be cut from the same cloth as all the previous Offensive Coordinators that Kirk allowed to do the job. The results always looks the same. Wonder why that is?

Disagree. TL offense looks clearly different than the BF offense and he did produce some good performances on that side of the ball this year. I’m sure KJ played a big part in that, but we used new personnel, formations and schemes that we didn’t before.

wonder if KJ would still be a projected 2nd round pick if BF were still in charge.
